(+)
Ravel, Maurice Tzigane Concert rhapsody for violin and piano In 1922 Maurice Ravel heard the young Hungarian violin virtuoso and niece of Joseph Joachim, Jelly D?Aranyi, in concert in London. Following the performance, Ravel spent the remainder of the evening requesting D?Aranyi to play numerous gypsy tunes on her violin, probing her on the technical limits of the instrument. The result of this encounter is Ravel?s virtuoso classic ?Tzigane?. Written originally for violin and piano or luthéal (a mechanism invented in 1919 that attaches to a piano, producing a sound similar to the rich overtones of the Cimbalon), the premiere took place in London in April 1924. The composer had finished the work only days beforehand. Ravel later orchestrated ?Tzigane? and both versions remain a ?must? for music-lovers and aspiring violinists today. Jelly D?Aranyi performed both versions regularly throughout her long career. This Urtext edition presents the first scholarly-critical edition of Ravel?s masterpiece. It is published both in the orchestral version, complete with full score and performance material, as well as in the composer?s earlier version for violin and piano. All known sources, including letters, have been drawn on for the new edition; one of the available sources, consulted for the first time, was a copy of ?Tzigane? from the estate of Jelly D?Aranyi, which is today part of a private collection. The version for piano and violin contains, besides the Urtext part, a second violin part as a facsimile with performance instructions by Jelly D?Aranyi. D?Aranyi?s alterations and fingering reflect how Ravel must have heard the work in rehearsals and performance and as such are a document of early 20th century performance practice. The cooperation between Ravel and D?Aranyi is comparable to that of Brahms and Joachim working on the Brahms violin concerto. - First scholarly-critical Urtext edition of the work - Presented are both versions: for violin and orchestra and for violin and piano - Includes Jelly D?Aranyi?s fingering

(+)
Three Pieces For Violin And Piano Op.11 were the first works to be written by composer Ian Venables after he moved to Worcestershire in 1986. The pieces Pastorale Romance and Dance have been called some of the most beautiful pieces for Violin and Piano ever composed. Brimming with melodic invention and radiant lyricism the music of Three Pieces For Violin And Piano is both rich and varied. Pastorale begins the interplay between the Violin and the Piano with a beautifully relaxing melodic accord with an Elgarian influence firmly on its sleeve.Romance exhibits the best kind of artistic simplicity a musical love-letter featuring an achingly heartbreaking conversation between the two instruments often ambiguous in its outlook. Dance concludes the Three Pieces with a rhythmically upbeat melody laden with staccato that unfolds into a lovely harmonic concordance a fitting end to this series of dialogue between the Violin and Piano. Ian Venables' Three Pieces For Violin And Piano Op.11 is a beautifully composed work that is guaranteed to have audiences craving more of such a lovely interplay of these two instruments.

The violin pupil can be accompanied either by the violin teacher (as a violin duet) or with piano. The optional alternative piano accompaniments are by Heidi Rolfe.'I can still remember the thrill I felt as a child of 8 when my violin teacher introduced me to my first concertino. Learning playing and eventually mastering the famous Küchler Concertino in D major made me feel privileged and grown-up as if I were joining a very special club. That was a long time ago yet for me concertinos still hold a distinctive place in the teaching repertoire. Having now taught the violin for the last thirty years and seen how happily my pupils respond to learningduets - that distinctive sense of enjoyment at playing with an adult the improvement of intonation and tone production the liveliness of the lesson - I have composed three new concertinos inspired by the duet form.Taking three great keys for the violin - G D and A minor I have endeavoured to combine emotionally engaging and technically educational music in the 'Olden Style'. Uniquely I have written a second violin part for the teacher to play alongside their pupil's part and there is also a piano accompaniment for use alternatively in concert settings.I very much hope that these concertinos prove as popular and as helpful as the series of duets in my previously published books Sounds of a Rainbow and that they ignite that sense of wonderment and purpose I experienced while playing the Kuchler all those years ago.'Nigel Goldberg

Contemporary works for violin and piano. Par . Fennica Gehrman the music publisher pays tribute to its composers with this 20th-anniversary collection of commissions for violin and piano. Stringendo - Contemporary works for violin and piano (2022) is a collection of ten pieces, which vary greatly as regards their genesis. That by Harri Wessman is playful and exhilarating; Mikko Heiniö wrote his on Women's Day, while the duets by Kalevi Aho and Matthew Whittall are tributes to the late Jaakko Kuusisto. Einojuhani Rautavaara is also represented, in an arrangement for violin and piano of his plaintive, melodic Sydämeni laulu (The Song of my Heart). The title of Lotta Wennäkoski's work, Vestige, is a fitting symbol for the whole collection. Short introductions to the pieces by their composers are included in the collection in English, Finnish, and Swedish. Contents Kalevi Aho (b. 1949): Le Tombeau de J. K. Einojuhani Rautavaara (1928-2016): Sydämeni laulu - Song of my heart Mikko Heiniö (b.1948): Naisten päivä - Women's Day Jyrki Linjama (b. 1962): De Profundis I Lotta Wennäkoski (b. 1970): Vestige Matthew Whittall (b.1975): Waiting to hear Olli Kortekangas (b. 1955): Capriccietto Harri Wessman (b.1949): Giocoso Veli-Matti Puumala (b. 1965): Édera IV Kimmo Hakola (b.1958): A Double Jubilee / Date parution : 2022-12-12/ Répertoire / Violon et Piano

Sonata / Berceuse sur le nom de Fauré for Violin and Piano
- New scholarly-critical edition of Ravel?s famous sonata
- First scholarly-critical edition of the ?Berceuse sur le nom de Fauré?
- Foreword on the historical context and performance practice issues (Eng/Ger) as well as a Critical Commentary (Eng)
Ravel worked on his Sonata for Violin and Piano for four years (1923?1927) which was longer than he took for any other composition. According to the composer, the reason for his difficulties was the ?fundamental incompatibility? of these two instruments. However, the interplay between two quite different partners is precisely what makes this sonata so charming. The violin and piano are independent, sometimes playing alongside each other and at other times with each other: here in a lyrical Allegretto, there in a jazz-inspired second movement, finally in a ?perpetuum mobile? finale.
This new edition edited by Douglas Woodfull-Harris corrects numerous inconsistencies of earlier editions. It also includes the ?Berceuse sur le nom de Fauré? which is available for the first time in a scholarly-critical Urtext edition. This lullaby for violin and piano consists of variations on a theme derived from the letters of Fauré?s name. / Partitions classique / Cordes / Violon / BARENREITER

Violin Sonata in G major-Inspired by Béla Bartók’s Violin sonatas Ravel...
(+)
Violin Sonata in G major-Inspired by Béla Bartók’s Violin sonatas Ravel planned his own sonata for Violin and Piano in 1922 but at first did not get beyond sketches. Many interruptions ensued and the work was onlyfinished in 1927. He dedicated it to his violinist friend Hélène Jourdan-Morhange. Regarding the sonata’s sparse thinned out compositional structure and instrumentation Ravel later emphasized thatthe sonata proved the tonal incompatibility of the Violin and Piano. Yet it still succeeded in winning a permanent place in Violin repertoire – not least because of its middle movement inspired by jazz elements and the“blues”. The fingerings in this Henle Urtext edition have been provided by two masters of their instruments: Christian Tetzlaff and Pascal Rogé.

A serene romance the work takes its title from a poem by George Meredith. (+)
Par IGUDESMAN ALEKSEY. Aleksey Igudesman might reasonably be described as a modern day Victor Borge. With his cabaret partner, Hyung-ki Joo, he has toured concert halls all over the world, wringing all that is humorous out of classical music with just the basic tools of violin and piano. The “Happy Birthday Variations” for violin and piano are dedicated to his good friend, the late Sir Roger Moore and are typical of Igudesman’s brand of humour. They take the internationally known musical greeting on a world-wide tour, from a Viennese Waltz, through a Big Band number, a Bulgarian Vivace in 7/8, a Russian Presto, a Tango and an Alpine Air to conclude in a Paganini-esque finale that’s not quite as difficult as it looks. A great concert showpiece for intermediate students, not least if someone in the audience is celebrating a special day! Or, if the teacher prefers to play the violin, Igudesman’s “The Soloist’s Ultimate Happy Birthday” (UE37199) does a different but equally funny job for violin duet./ Recueil / Violon et Piano

(+)
Par HEINIO MIKKO. Mikko Heiniö's Alla madre (2007) abandons the traditional virtuoso concerto concept: here a large orchestra engages in dialogue with a solo violin. The first movement is called Arrivo, ?Arrival?: the soloist literally arrives later, and by degrees, playing his/her first two solos offstage. Even then the orchestra continues to take the initiative for a long time. Not until the second movement, entitled Aura, ?Air or Wind?, does the initiative pass to the solo violin as it sets light to notes in the orchestra harmony like individual lamps. And not until the end of the second movement and the beginning of the third does the solo violin play completely on its own. The title of the first movement, ?Arrival?, underlines the event, the dramaturgy, whereas that of the second movement, ?Aura?, alludes to the texture and the shimmering space. The third movement is the most strongly emotional, as the name Carezza, ?Caress? suggests. This product includes the solo part and the piano reduction (B4 sized). The orchestral material is available from the publisher. The orchestration: 3(III picc)3(III ca)3(III=bcl)3(III=cfg)-4331-13-hp-str / Date parution : 2023-01-24/ Répertoire / Violon et Piano

Transcription for Violin and Piano by the Composer. In his symphonic poem ?Danse macabre? Saint-Saëns takes up a poem by Henri Cazalis that he had already set as an art song. Here the Devil brings the dead to life by playing his violin. Although the orchestral work was given a lukewarm reception in its early performances, or was even rejected, it became highly popular and internationally famous in the years that followed. Of the countless later arrangements and variations (e.g. by Franz Liszt), Saint-Saëns? own version for violin and piano stands out as particularly successful. Céline Drèze?s advance edition for a future volume of the ?Saint-Saëns Complete Edition of the Instrumental Works? is the first modern scholarly edition of this celebrated piece. This Urtext edition draws on the original print of the 1877 version, while eliminating its many misprints and anomalies on the basis of the autograph.

'Romance for violin and piano is a short reflective piece that exploits the lyrical qualities inherent in the combination. Originally written for a very young but talented violinist Romance travels through numerous moods andcolours within a continuous musical development of the opening material. At first gentle and reflective with increasing dramatic outbursts outlined by the violin sforzandi and parallel sixths in the piano writing numerous shortsolo passages in both instruments culminate in a fiery climax. Quickly subsiding into the calmer yet now more melancholy strains of the earlier stages of the piece the ending is somewhat incomplete. This seems to suggest acontinuous turn of events alluded to in the music.'???????????? - Helen GrimeBorn in 1981 Helen studied oboe with JohnAnderson and composition with Julian Anderson and Edwin Roxburgh at the Royal College of Music. (+)
Viennese music has become almost synonymous with Johann Strauss II and his great waltzes. But of course there were other luminaries: his father Johann Strauss I his talented brothers Josef and Eduard as well as their colleagues friends and rivals. This collection includes music by some of these; and apart from waltzes we have polkas (slow and fast) a couple of melodies from operettas and a march. The selection ranges from shorter eminently playable miniatures to a handful of more extended and challenging arrangements. The waltz kings were first and foremost fiddlers. They led their orchestras from the front instrument and bow in hand. As a young man JohannStrauss II used to practise his Violin in a full-length mirror so he would look every inch the part. They knew how to write for the Violin how to make it sing and dance and this helps to make the repertoire a perfect foil to the other volumes in this series. The arrangements in this collection can be performed as solos duets or trios or by larger ensembles. In fact here are all the resources to recreate a Viennese café orchestra! The full range of traditional fiddle repertoire is now at your fingertips! Using these generous collections you can create your own ceilidh barn dance jazz club Sarajevo street-café or Gypsy gathering. Some of this music is familiar some more exotic but all of it is absolutely authentic faithfully arranged and above all hugely enjoyable. Each title in the series is available in two formats: the Violin edition (with an optional easy Violin part and Guitar chords); or the complete edition which also includes both Keyboard and Violin accompaniments. Either format is hugely flexible which means the music can be played as solos duets or trios as well as with larger ensembles. Edward Huws Jones has travelled extensively researching fiddle-playing traditions. In each book he explains the background of the particular musical style giving his own suggestions for a lively performance. And to help recreate the spirit of the music every book in the series is beautifully illustrated.

Among the best of Jean Sibelius’ oeuvre are his 1917 compositions the Humoresques. This fabulous and charming concerto was divided into two groups for publication Opus 87 and Opus 89 and demonstrates his sublime skill with the Violin. He used a considerably smaller Orchestra accompaniment to the Violin in the second group but maintained the subtlety of depth and texture. Though there are traditional elements to all parts of this opus Humoresque No. 4 harks back to the past the most reminiscent of the delicacy of mid-nineteenth century musical miniatures. Virtuosic and challenging the soloist has the opportunity to indulge in a more traditionallyexhibitionistic display. This work features a seperate Violin part with a Piano reduction of the String Orchestra by Karl Ekman.

Edward Gregson: Serenata Notturna: Violin: Instrumental Work

Serenata Notturna by Edward Gregson was first performed by Helena Smart (violin) and Caroline Jaya-Ratnam (piano) at the String Final of BBC Young Musicians 2000 Royal Northem College of Music Manchester 23 February 2000.'As the title suggests my Serenata Notturna evokes the atmosphere of night music. Following a reflective opening where the pitch development outlines a twelve-note series the music gradually becomes more agitated developing into a kind of danse macabre eventually reaching a powerful climax. The music then subsides into a much more tranquil atmosphere and the previous dissonant material transposes itself into a simple melody(like a lullaby) uttered by the violin the outline of which both melodically and in terms of the accompaniment figuration has already been present in the piece since the beginning. Thus the turmoil of the first part of the work becomes transfigured into something much more peaceful - hence the quotation that prefaces the score: ?out of darkness cometh light?. After I finished the work it became apparent to me that it might become the sketch for the slow movement of a Violin Concerto on which I had just begun working. It did indeed form the basis of that slow movement and the concerto was premiered by Lyn Fletcher and the Halle Orchestra conducted by Kent Nagano at Bridgewater Hall Manchester in February 2000 the same month as Serenata Notturna itself was first played in public.'Edward Gregson

Joaqu n Rodrigo was a Spanish composer and a virtuoso pianist. Rodrigo's music is among the most popular music of the 20th century in particular his Concierto de Aranjuez is considered one of the pinnacles of Spanish music and of the Guitar concerto repertoire. Although distinguished by having raised the Spanish Guitar to dignity as a universal concert instrument and best known for his Guitar music the blind composer never mastered the instrument himself.Rodrigo dedicated Rumaniana to the violinist Josefina Salvador who performed it in 1943. In order to master this progressive modern piece for Violin and Piano a thoroughknowledge of Violin techniques and music theory is required by the violinist. Violin score is included separately. Duration ca. 6:15.

Composed in 1924 for Violin and Luthéal (A keyboard instrument which never gained much popularity) Tzigane demonstrated Ravel's ability to go beyond his natural Impressionist style and write a piece which would be much better categorized as Late Romantic. First performed with the Luthéal substituted for a Piano in 1925 today the piece is accepted as either being performed with the Piano and Violin or Orchestra and Violin Ravel himself having arranged the piece for Orchestra.

The work of British composer Percy Turnbull is less well known than some of his counterparts but interest in his works is steadily on the increase. Drawing from wide influences such as Roussel Fauré Delius and Bartok his individual and original compositional style often incorporates French and English music. Dating from the mid-1930s his Romance for Violin and Piano is typical of his work; unostentatious and uncomplicated while maintaining a sense of harmonic and technical mastery. Wonderfully written for Violin and Piano this is a vivid and eloquent piece that will be enjoyed by both listeners and performers.
