The early sonatas. Par SCHUBERT FRANZ. Schubert was visibly adventurous in his early piano sonatas, as is apparent in their wide-ranging key schemes, diverging versions of many movements or entire sonatas, and numerous works left incomplete. This revised Urtext edition contains the sonatas he composed between 1815 and 1817. An updated preface and valuable notes on central questions of performance practice (e.g. articulation, pedalling and embellishments), with a special emphasis on his idiosyncratic treatment of accent-like diminuendo hairpins, form a useful introduction to the sonatas. Schubert?s drafts and fragments can be accessed on the Bärenreiter website. - Urtext edition based on the ?New Schubert Edition?, with drafts and fragments accessible on the Bärenreiter website (see BA 9642: Extras) - Reader-friendly engraving with practical page-turns and running titles to facilitate the location of sonatas and movements - Valuable notes on performance practice in Schubert?s day (Ger/Eng) - Critical Commentary with readings relevant to performance, especially regarding Schubert?s notation of accents (Eng) / Date parution : 2022-07-30/ Recueil / Piano

With the new Urtext Primo series, the Wiener Urtext Edition wants to close the g...(+)
With the new Urtext Primo series, the Wiener Urtext Edition wants to close the gap arising at the point of transition to additional lessons after having studied a piano method. Beginning with a performance level which is outlined by pieces such as Bach's Minuet in G (BWV Anh. 116), Mozart's Minuet in F (KV 5) or Schumann's Wilder Reiter (Op. 68/8), each volume contains works by three different composers, with the aim of offering piano pupils (or even adults who want to resume piano playing) a wide range of repertoire pieces on the basis of which they can enhance their technical and musical skills. In contrast to conventional piano anthologies, the pieces' range of levels of difficulty is relatively narrow so that the volume can be used continuously over a period of about two years. The selected repertoire takes into account not only pieces of the classic canon of lessons, but also lesser known works which are in no way of less importance for piano lessons. The explanations included at the end of each volume shall help to deepen the knowledge of musical styles, music history and piano playing. A repertoire chart at the end of each volume gives a rough overview of the levels of difficulty of the selected pieces. After Vol. 1 with works by Bach, Handel and Scarlatti and Vol. 2 with compositions by Haydn, Mozart and Cimarosa, Vol. 3 contains pieces by Beethoven, Schubert und Hummel, including popular pieces such as Beethoven's 'Für Elise' and lesser known, yet stimulating settings by Johann Nepomuk Hummel. / Piano

New Liszt Edition III Vol. 1. Par LISZT FRANZ. Composed in 1834, Liszt's Grand d...(+)
New Liszt Edition III Vol. 1. Par LISZT FRANZ. Composed in 1834, Liszt's Grand duo is based on material from three pieces from the first book (op. 19b) of Mendelssohn's Songs without Words (no. 1 in E major, no. 6 in G minor, and no. 3 in A major). While Liszt made an almost literal transcription of the first piece, he gave the second and third pieces a much freer arrangement, in the style of concert paraphrases. The large-scale concert piece was premiered by Liszt and Chopin on Christmas Day 1834 in a salon in Paris. The Grand duo was not published in Liszt's lifetime, and has survived as a draft. Schubert's Fantasy in C major (also known as the 'Wanderer' Fantasy) was a defining musical experience for the young Liszt. He arranged this masterpiece of Romantic piano literature for piano and orchestra in 1851, at the beginning of his Weimar period, and it was premiered by Julius Egghard in Vienna in December of that year. By 1855, Liszt had transcribed this arrangement for two pianos, because it was played on 22 October 1855 at a concert held in Weimar in honour of his birthday. With the version for piano and orchestra, Liszt attuned the fantasy to the requirements of the concert hall, reinforcing the orchestral effects inherent in Schubert's composition. His aim with the two-piano version was to achieve a similarly grand effect in spaces too small for an orchestra. The arrangement for piano and orchestra appeared in print in 1857, followed by the two-piano version in 1862. This volume comes complete with a detailed preface in English, German, and Hungarian containing new research findings, several manuscript facsimiles, and a critical report in English. / Date parution : 2023-03-11/ Répertoire / 2 Pianos

Op. Post. 147 - D 575.

As a continuation of the new Urtext edition of the Schubert lieder, Walther Dür...(+)
As a continuation of the new Urtext edition of the Schubert lieder, Walther Dürr has now edited volume five for high, medium and low voices. Volumes 1 to 4 of this edition contain mainly lieder which Schubert himself saw into print (in his own choice and order) and in the fourth volume works from the last two years of his life are included. The lieder in volume 5 onwards are strictly presented in the order of Deutsch's Thematic Catalogue which means that in principle they are arranged chronologically. The lieder in volume five were composed in the years 1811 to 1814. The first - 'Hagars Klage' (D 5), dated 30 March 1811 - is also his first complete surviving song. The first eleven lieder are evidence of his early studies (1811-1813/14). During this period Schubert immersed himself in Johann Rudolf Zumsteeg's ballads and lieder and wrote Italian arias during his composition lessons with Antonio Salieri. He also composed a single strophic song ('Klaglied', D 23), which - the only one of these songs - was published shortly after his death in November 1830 as op. 131, 3. His apprentice work, as it were, was the major ballade 'Der Taucher' (D 77) which was composed between 1813 and roughly the beginning of 1815. Probably not by chance, his first complete opera ('Des Teufels Lustschloss', D 84) was written at the same time. He also set fourteen poems by Friedrich von Matthisson exploring the principle of the strophic lied. - Excellent new engraving based on the 'New Schubert Edition'- Foreword by Walther Dürr discussing the history the works' composition and transmission, together with a list of sources for each song (Ger/Eng)- English translation of the song texts by Richard WigmoreContents:Hagars Klage, D 5 / Leichenfantasie, D 7 /Der Vatermörder, D 10 / Klaglied, op. post. 131, 3 - D 23 / Misero pargoletto, D 42 (high voice only) / Totengräberlied, D 44 / Die Schatten, D 50 / Verklärung, D 59 / Pensa che questo istante, D 76 (medium and low voice only) /Der Taucher, D 77 / Son fra l'onde, D 78 (high voice only) /Adelaide, D 95 / Trost. Tiefe Stimme / Low Voice. Par SCHUBERT FRANZ. Continuing the new Urtext edition of Schubert’s Lieder, editor Walther Dürr now presents Volume 6, for Low Voice. While volumes 1 to 4 of this series contain mostly Lieder that Schubert had published during his lifetime, volume 5ff. contain the remaining songs which are presented basically chronologically in the order of their Deutsch catalogue number. The Lieder in this sixth volume were composed during the period between autumn 1814 and spring 1815. With “Nachtgesang” (D 119) and “Trost in Tränen” (D120) Schubert turns to the“Strophenlied” in its stricter sense for the first time. He develops an interest in this form parallel to his first involvement with Geothe. Schubert, during this period an assistant teacher at his father’s school, orientated himself towards the so-called “Berliner Liederschule”, particularly the songs of Johann Friedrich Reichardt. By the beginning of the year 1815 he drew his inspiration mainly from the texts of Theodor Körner; however he regularly still produced settings for the poetry of Goethe and Schiller. - Based on the Urtext of the “New Schubert Edition” - Newly engraved, clearly presented musical layout - Foreword by Walther Dürr on the history and genesis of the work as well as an explanation of the sources for each individual lied (Eng/Ger) - Includes English translations of lieder texts by Richard Wigmore/ Répertoire / Vocal et Piano

The Late Sonatas. Par SCHUBERT FRANZ. Volume III of Schubert's Piano Sonatas inc...(+)
The Late Sonatas. Par SCHUBERT FRANZ. Volume III of Schubert's Piano Sonatas includes the tuneful, dance-like Sonata in G major D 894 (1827), sometimes called the 'Fantasie” sonata, as well as the three great sonatas in C minor, A major and B-flat major (D 958, 959 and 960), which were conceived as a triptych and constitute the composer's greatest contribution to the piano sonata genre. The works pay homage to the three late sonatas of Beethoven.
This scholarly-critical Urtext edition is based on the definitive musical text of the 'New Schubert Edition” and presents the works in a spacious new engraving with practical page turns. It includes an informative Foreword and detailed notes (Ger/Eng) on central performance practice issues such as the use of pedals and Schubert's distinctive manner of notating accents. It is rounded off by a Critical Commentary (Eng) with performance-related alternative readings. Schubert's drafts for individual sonata movements can be accessed on the Bärenreiter website.
