The two John Milton poems, L'Allegro (cheerfulness), and Il Pensi eroso (melancholy), describe the differences between these two moods. Charles Jennens fashioned a libretto from these texts, adding a third part entitled Moderato (moderation). From the first performance the oratorio was already a great success, a success which continued in later years. This edition is a revised reprint of Friedrich Chrysander's edition. Allegro Brillante is the first movement of Dragonland for band. The first performance (under the original title, A Short Symphony) was given by the L.E. Dieruff High School Concert Band, conducted by Raymond S. Becker, Jr., on April 21, 1978. The work was subsequently revised, and first performed in its new version by the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Symphony Band, conducted by Donald S. George, on November 23rd, 1980. Allegro Brillante is the first movement of four. The music is almost profligate in its tunefulness, quick to change tack and tempo, and will benefit from an interpretation of headstrong abandon. The Sonata is one of Erkin's works which the casual listener may fail to attribute to a particular geography at a first hearing. He will however become absorbed by a unique sense of identity, surprising harmonies and rhythms which integrate with such sincerity and authenticity in the flowof the music. At a more attentive hearing, one can discover features of ancient Anatolian music which Erkin always transforms with extraordinary inspiration, enfolding audiences unfamiliar with this culture in a music which is often profoundly spiritual with an admirably woven polyphonic texture in which not one bar seems superfluous or out of place.The first movement Allegro is woven from two contrasting themes. The first is a vigorous progression in the middle register with contrapuntal elements quasi as counterpoint. A luminous second theme evoking folk tunes connects back to the first theme and the movement ends in a brisk tone.In the second movement Adagio molto sostenuto a profound, introspective first theme is developed in variations of exquisite lyricism. The imposing middle section which forms a rondo suggests latent unrest.Imbued with energy and determination, the final Allegro consists of abstracted elements of Anatolian folk music bearing the creative stamp of Erkin. The movement ends with an impressive crescendo.

On her 34th birthday, Clara Schumann was not only given a grand piano by her husband, but the latest music material as well. Belgian composer Theo Van Doren (1898 - 1974) was a Belgian composer, teacher and violinist. He was a teacher at the Music Academy of Borgerhout and was also a soloist in the orchestra of the Royal Flemish Opera in Antwerp. This edition of his Andante and Allegro for double bass and piano was first published by Metropolis Music Publishers in 1967. The opening Andante is a chance for the soloist to demonstrate the lyrical and expressive qualities of the double bass. Following this is the Allegro, which is a scherzo in 3/8 time, allowing the the soloist to show the technical capabilities and utilize the whole range of the instrument. The work is dedicated to Leo Van de Velde, teacher at the Royal Flemish Conservatory of Music in Antwerp.
