On a pu prouver entretemps qu?il s?agissait à l?origine du dernier mouvement du 2e Concerto pour piano op. 19 que Beethoven remplaça vers 1794/95 par le final actuel.

La forte influence de Mozart que l?on décèle dans ce mouvement n?est certainement pas étrangère à cette décision.

Cornelius Gurlitt is one of the co-founders of 19th-century piano teaching. Going on from the method of Carl Czerny, his rich educational material is extremely topical even today. Der Anfänger is a collection of little pieces for four hands with an easy primo and a somewhat more difficult secondo part which are ideal for music lessons at elementary and intermediate levels or as duos for pupil and teacher. In the primo part, the hands for the most part play in unison - due to an inventive harmonic accompaniment, however, the little pieces become musically interesting exercises. The level of difficulty increases with regard to rhythm, articulation, time and key as well as dynamics and possibilities of musical interpretation. The so-called Moonlight Sonata is probably the best known of all of Beethoven's piano sonatas, and one should think that all that can be said about this work has already been said. But far from it! Even this sonata shows problems in the surviving musical text into which the new edition looks very meticulously. Is it a note-head or a staccato dot in bar 159 of the 3rd movement? This and other questions are answered in the edition and reasonably explained in the Critical Notes. Each piece of Op. 337 consists of various sections of one to several measures, each concluded by a coda. Czerny's own instructions above the studies read: 'Each repetition should be played 20 times without interruption,' or other numbers of repetitions. 'Daily Exercises' does not mean that all 40 studies are to be played every day, but the composer recommends that about one hour be devoted to studying part of them every day, requiring about three or four days to get through all 40 of them.
