Auld Lang Syne-This traditional melody is known worldwide as a song of farewell. Jan Van der Roost treated it as an anthem in this splendid arrangement. The melody is brought to us in whole or in part by various instruments and is surrounded by logical yet original - sometimes surprising - chords that dare to fluctuate. After a broad tutti the ensemble begins to die out. The piece ends with an impressive diminuendo of the final chord almost as if the orchestra itself were saying goodbye.

Drawing on the rich African musical tradition here is a collection of three captivating themes in a miniature suite format. Included is Jikel' Emaweni a South African Folk song in a moderate tempo the up tempo Zulu folksong Jabula Jesu and moving national anthem of South Africa N'kosi Sikelel' I Afrika. The percussion writing is exotic sounding but can be played using traditional instruments as well. A marvelous introduction tothe sounds of Africa for young players.

Britten wrote Irish Reel in 1936 as the title music for a documentary film entitled Around the Village Green. It is a bravura piece exhibiting all the energy and strong orchestral colours typical of the composer at that time and makes good use of a traditional reel tune with the evocative title The Bottom of the Punch Bowl.Guy Woolfenden's transcription for symphonic wind band skilfully captures all the fun and sparkle of this ebullient score.

Par GYORFFY ISTVAN. Hungarian-style dance music which flourished in the 16th and 17th centuries - generally referred to as ungaresca - represents a valuable part of European musical tradition. István Gyorffy's work (2007-2010) is a late successor of this tradition. It was written with the intention of embodying the eastern-central European tradition in order to present an alternative to the current fashions of music for wind instruments. The composer's approach to this style utilizes traditional forms of music. Both the first and third movements effectively optimize a concert band's tonal possibilities by using solos and small chamber groups in a varied manner. The slow and melodic second movement transfers a characteristic playing technique of Hungarian instrumental folk music to the concert band. István Gyorffy composed Ungaresca for young people preparing for careers in music. Troika Rushing is one of many popular traditional folk songs that exist in Russia. Though not all Russian folk songs are in the minor key man of them are including this one. All of the wind instruments take their turn in playing the melody making it enjoyable for all to play.

Klezmer music originated in the ‘shtetl’ (villages) and the ghettos of Eastern Europe where itinerant Jewish troubadours known as ‘klezmorim’ had performed at celebrations particularly weddings since the early Middle Ages. Since the 16th century lyrics had been added to klezmer music due to the ‘badkhn’ (the master of ceremony at weddings) to the ‘Purimshpil’ (the play of Esther at Purim) and to traditions of the Yiddish theatre but the term gradually became synonymous with instrumental music particularly featuring the Violin and Clarinet. In recent years it has again become very popular and in A Klezmer Karnival Philip Sparke has used threecontrasting traditional tunes to form a suite that will bring a true karnival atmosphere to any concert.

Auxiliary Woodwind Parts-Commissioned by the acclaimed Midwest Clinic in 2005 this exciting work by Samuel Hazo demonstrates the composer's continued fresh approach and unique vision for wind bands. Scored for brass and percussion with woodwind playerscontributing East African chant/singing along with egg shakers this composition is a tribute to the memory of Rosa Parks and her struggles on behalf of civil rights more than 50 years ago. Based on the traditional American shaped-note melody The Promised Land (first published in the 1800's) Beyond the Stars captures the spirit of the early American church musicians who voiced their enthusiasm for life and the freedom of worship through both vocal and instrumental music. The music features several mini-variations wrapped up in four large variations (Fast Fast Slow Fast-recapitulation). The composer has created new thematic material for each variation by excerpting motifs from three separate phrases of the original shaped-note melody. A stunning and powerful work for winds.
