It contains two festive compositions written for the inauguration of the Akademische Gymnasium in 1744, one piece composed for the centennial of the Absolute and Hereditary Monarchy Act in Denmark (1760), one Latin ode to the King of Denmark for a school festivity in Altona, and an excerpt of two arias - the only surviving part of the music composed for the inauguration of Elias Caspar Reichard as Professor of Eloquence and Poetry at the Akademische Gymnasium (1741). The edition was prepared on the basis of the known sources held at the Brussels Conservatory Library, new manuscripts contained in a rediscovered anthology of the Hamburg State Library including those previously unknown compositions, as well as printed texts which had not been considered to date from the Royal Library in Copenhagen. The Foreword provides information regarding Telemann's tenure in Altona. Also included is a catalogue of all related works. Par TELEMANN GEORG PHILIPP. This volume represents the only annual cycle of sacred music of the 18th century printed in score: it was completed in 1744. The textual basis stems from Erdmann Neumeister. In contrast to the usual practice of the Telemann Edition to edit segments of the church years, here the entire course of the church year is presented. The music to be performed at the beginning of each part of the church year and at special celebrations is included. Telemann used a variety of expressive polyphonic techniques to create the introductory dicta. These, like the chorales, are written in concentrated three-part harmony. The preface provides information on the printing history of the church year and its dissemination supplemented by comments on performance practice: the critical report analyses the rich source material. Editions of Telemann's preface (with his performance notes and an explanation of his figured bass system), the preface on the printing of the texts and the texts of the compositions contained in the volume flank the edition of the music. Opera in three acts. Par HAENDEL GEORG FRIEDRICH. ; Almira, Handel's first opera, was well received when premiered in 1705 at the Theater am Gänsemarkt in Hamburg. The director was Reinhard Keiser, who, remarkably, had himself already set Friedrich Christian Feustking's text to music. The role of Fernando was sung by Johann Mattheson. The translation used by Handel leaves several Italian arias in their original language, resulting in a delightful mixture of German and Italian. The opera which, after sundry entangled romances, ends in the wedding of three couples, is characterised by exuberant scenes: the procession at Almira's crowning ceremony, a duel, a prison scene and a masked-ball involving the three continents Europe, Africa and Asia. The vocal score to ; Almira by George Frideric Handel brings about a small sensation: Whilst conducting a reenactment of this work in 1732, Georg Philipp Telemann removed the Aria no. 28 ; Ingrato, spietato from his conducting score. Since then this aria has been deemed lost. Due to necessity only the edited vocal text devoid of any music was presented in the 1994 volume of the ; Halle Handel Edition. Thanks to a recently discovered contemporary manuscript copy from the beginning of the 18th century which was found in the music library of the Mariengymnasium in Jever, this aria has now been made available to performers for the first time in this new vocal score edition. Previous to this the corresponding pages could only be seen as a facsimile in an article of the ; Göttinger Händel -Beiträge. Now the aria can be performed again.
