Tango Tzigane - Jealousy-Tango Jalousie (Tango Tzigane - Jealousy) - Jacob Gade's classic arranged for Piano Duet (four hands) by conductor Esther Bobrova Lange. From the Preface: It is a common misconception that Tango Jalousie (Tango Tzigane) was written for the movie ”Don Q”. The piece was also played at the movie premiere in Paladsteatret on September 14th 1925 but there was no jealousy-based drama in the movie. Nonetheless the melody was well suited to the Zorro legend in a Mexican setting. But in the book “Jacob Gade – et eventyr i musik” (a fairytale in music) by Jørgen GramChristensen one learns that in a 1956 interview Jacob Gade recounted the incident in 1925 which concerned him very much: “One day the magazines featured a dramatic description of a jealousy-based murder and the word “jealousy” stood for me as a title with which the music became more and more attached.”There are many different arrangements of “Tango Jalousie” but I have always found that there was a need for a piano four hands version of this wonderful piece. In the process of working out a piano four hands version I used the full orchestra score and made sure that the most essential orchestra parts were included. Gregory Stone has transcribed these three selected preludes for one piano-four hands.For much of his life George Gershwin sought to integrate the worlds of jazz and classical music. These pieces are not jazz improvisations but they do show something of the style of his own playing. Gershwin had intended to compose a set of twelve, a sort of jazz Wohltemperierte Clavier, but his unexpected death from a brain tumour at the age of 38 prevented this. At least seven survive (others may have ended up as songs), and this set of three, as published, form a satisfying unit.The first opens with a blue-note riff which forms the basis of the first theme. Contrasting material follows, making use of a distinctive repeated note figure, then the first idea reappears in a quasi-orchestral climax. The second prelude shows a curious kinship with Chopin's A minor Prelude, with its eerie accompaniment and hypnotic melody. The third exploits a similar major/minor ambivalence, but dextrous syncopation gives it driving rhythmic energy. / Piano 4 Mains

Piano duet score. 1st performance Ellesmere College January 1986 by Richard Markham and David Nettle. Duration c.24 minutes. The work is in three movements and the musical thought is symphonic. The first movement (based entirely on the opening motive) goes through a series of paragraphs which eventually culminate in an extended melodic line played entirely by the treble player. The middle movement is a playful Scherzo with a rather sardonic waltz for its Trio. The slow movement (which comes last) is much more relaxed and concentrates on a D major motive with sharpened fourths but the more intense moods of the first movement return in a suddenly impassioned middle section.
