Shalom Chaverim is an ancient Hebrew (farewell)song, which was originally sung at the end of a celebration or meeting. It was and is mostly sung as a round. Freely translated the words mean “Goodbye, friends, goodbye and see you again!”. The varying moods at a parting have been captured very well by Andreas Schulte in his arrangement ‘Variations on Shalom Chaverim’. The composer himself says about the song, ‘Although the melody is in a minor key, the overall atmosphere in the song is positive. one wishes each other all the best. Saying goodbye, however, also hurts. When you slow down the pace of the melody and add ‘blue notes’ in the harmonies, this can be sensed immediately.’Schulte refers here to the first variation. The second variation is very intense with possibly even deeper-felt emotions. ‘Variations on Shalom Chaverim’ ends on a cheerful and positive note, in fast tempo, and with oriental elements in the melody: ‘L'hitra'ot, Shalom’ (See you again, and farewell!).

Shalom Chaverim is een oud hebreeuws (afscheids)lied, dat oorspronkelijk aan het eind van een viering of bijeenkomst gezongen werd. Dit werd en wordt meestal in ‘canon’ gedaan. Vrij vertaald luidt de tekst: ‘Dag makkers, dag, totziens!’. De verschillende stemmingen bij een afscheid zijn bijzonder fraai door Andreas Schulte in zijn ‘Variations on Shalom Chaverim’ verwerkt. Zelf zegt de componist over het lied: ‘Alhoewel de toonsoort van de melodie in mineuris, is de teneur van het lied positief. je wenst elkaar alle goeds toe. Maar afscheid doet soms pijn. Wanneer je het tempo van de melodie verlaagt en ‘blue-notes’ toevoegt in de samenklanken, is dit direct voelbaar.’ Schulte doelthiermee op de eerste variatie. De tweede variatie is zeer intens met mogelijk nog diepere gevoelens. Met een hoog tempo en oosterse elementen in de melodie, eindigt Variations on Shalom Chaverim, opgewekt en positief: ‘L'hitra'ot,Shalom’ (Tot ziens, het ga je goed!).

I Shall Love But Thee is an occasional work in the literal sense of the word, since it was originally written on the occasion of the composer’s youngest son’s wedding. The texts, by William Shakespeare, inspired Jan Van der Roost to compose profound and appealing music, largely in the style of Henry Purcell (in the first part) and Georg Friedrich Handel (in the second part)—although no literal quotations have been used. The rather rare combination of soprano and brass band makes this piece a unique addition to the repertoire!

I Shall Love But Thee is in de letterlijke zin van het woord een gelegenheidswerk, want het werd oorspronkelijk geschreven naar aanleiding van het huwelijk van de jongste zoon van de componist. De teksten zijn van William Shakespeare: Jan Van der Roost werd erdoor ge nspireerd tot het creëren van indringende en aansprekende muziek, die in stilistisch opzicht doet denken aan Henry Purcell (in het eerste deel) en Georg Friedrich Händel (in het tweede deel), twee componisten die op teksten van Shakespeare hebben gecomponeerd ook al zijn er geen letterlijke citaten gebruikt. De vrij zeldzame combinatie van sopraan en brassband maakt dit werk een unieke aanwinst voor hetrepertoire!

I Shall Love But Thee ist ein Gelegenheitswerk im eigentlichen Sinn, denn der Komponist hat es ursprünglich aus Anlass der Hochzeit seines jüngsten Sohnes geschrieben. Die Texte stammen von William Shakespeare und haben Jan Van der Roost dazu inspiriert, eine tiefgründige und ansprechende Musik im Stil der großen Meister zu komponieren. Stilistisch erinnert sie an Henry Purcell (im ersten Teil) und an Georg Friedrich Händel (im zweiten Teil), auch wenn keine literarischen Zitate verwendet wurden. Durch die eher seltene Kombination von Sopran und Brass Band stellt das Stück eine einzigartige Bereicherung für das Repertoire dar!

Les textes de William Shakespeare ont inspiré Jan Van der Roost écrire de la musique profonde et attrayante qui, au niveau du style, nous rappelle Henry Purcell (dans la première partie) et Georg Friedrich Haendel (dans la deuxième moitié), deux compositeurs qui ont mis en musique des textes de Shakespeare, bien qu’on n’y retrouve pas de citations littérales. Cette œuvre unique au regroupement plutôt rare de soprano et brass band va enrichir votre répertoire !

The characteristic so typical of Jewish folk music is clearly apparent in this arrangement of the Jewish folk song, Shalom Alechem. It is typical in the sense, in that, in spite of the minor key, songs are often cheerful by nature, Johan Nijs managed to capture this perfectly in this outstanding arrangement.

La musique juive traditionnelle possède une caractéristique unique : elle est un subtil mélange de joie et de mélancolie. Le célèbre chant, Shalom Alechem, en est la parfaite illustration. En dépit de l’utilisation de la gamme mineure, la trame reste festive. L’arrangement de Johan Nijs reste parfaitement fidèle l’atmosphère de la chanson originale. La musique nous conquit par son enthousiasme et sa vitalité.
