Two volumes entitled Cello Meets Piano edited and published by Árpád Pejtsik were issued many years ago by the Könemann Music Budapest. The first edition was quickly sold out and no further editions followed. EMB has undertaken to issue a new edition entitled Cello & Piano with the content unchanged. The two volumes contain a selection from 200 years of music. Eight Baroque sonatas are included apart from the famous D minor one by Corelli there are some that are appearing in a modern edition for the first time in 300 years. Cheryl Frances-Hoad's Excelsus for solo Cello. 'Excelsus takes the form of a suite each movement being based on a passage from the Requiem mass text. Although I spent many hours refining my interpretation of the words the work is ultimately a more instinctive reaction to the evocative language of the excerpts. However my stance was always totally atheistic and this infiltrates everything from the mood through the disregard for the text’s order to the instrumentation (the use of a lone figure which I viewed as a musical equivalent to the ‘first person’ offending against the liturgical norms which areconcerned with people as a community). Musically the entire work is based on two themes one melodic (the Rex Tremendae or ‘King of Awful Majesty’ theme which is heard at the very opening) and one chordal (the Lux Aeternum (Light eternal) chords not revealed in their pure form until the pizzicato passage that concludes the suite). The Basic of Cello technique in selected etudes-Studies play an important role in musical instrument training. Gerhard Mantel's new edition 'Etüden üben' [Practising studies] (3 volumes) complements his previous successful book 'Cello üben' (ED 8714). The basics of cello technique are worked on in selected studies with the focus being not only on the ability to learn a technically and musically oriented text within a reasonable time but also on the solution of certain problems typical of the cello. Vol. 1 covers aspects ranging from the orientation on the fingerboard via changes of position vibrato and trills to changes of strings and double stops. Vol. 2 deals with fingerings whole-bow stroke dynamics articulation and types of bowing among others. The final volume contains studies on legato arpeggios chords martellato staccato spiccato and changes of rhythm. The accompanying volume of commentaries (for all three volumes) describes in detail the methodological practising processes.

The editor of this complete edition is a musicologist and a noted expert on Kabelac's work Dr. Zdenek Nouza. The outline of the edition is as follows: I. Orchestral and Concert compositions II. compositions for solo Voice or a Chorus with Orchestra or Instrumental Ensemble III. songs with Piano Choruses Children's Choruses IV. Chamber compositions V. compositions for Piano and Organ.Sonata Op.9 for Cello and Piano which came into existence betweenyears 1941-42 has never been published before. Therefore as part of the Complete Edition this composition appears in print for the first time. Its edition is based on an authograph present in the Museum of Czech Music in Prague. The prominent Czech cello player Daniel Veis who also premiered the complete four-movement version has revised the cello part of this edition.

Esa-Pekka Salonen's YTA III for solo Cello. This work was written for Anssi Karttunen who gave the first performance at the Musiikin aika Festival Viitasaari Finland on 23rd July1987.'I began to work on the YTA series in 1982. The first piece was for solo alto flute the second for pianoand the third for cello. The title ‘Yta’ is a Swedish word meaning ‘surface’. I wanted to writeverydemanding virtuoso music where the surface is extremely busy but the formal process partly hiddenbehind the frenetic stream of fast gestures is considerably slower.I tried to imagine what happens to the famous moth thatcircles around a lamp in Skryabin’s Versla flamme after the wings have finally touched the flame. A series of gestures is introduced in thebeginning. Each gesture undergoes an individual development culminating in spasms beforedyingaway.
