Best remembered for his extraordinary advancement of Piano technique, Franz Liszt saw himself in quite a different light: as an innovative composer prepared to move beyond convention into uncharted waters. He and Richard Wagner were allies in Zukunftsmusik, the 'music of the future,' a new approach that was liberated from all prescribed rules of musical form. Par SORENSEN BENT . When it comes to titles, almost all the works I have composed have found their title before or at the same moment I started them. That is why it was also surprising - not to say transgressive - for me that my work for 9 instruments for Ensemble MidtVest was completely untitled until the last bar. Then it dawned on me that the titlelessness was a natural result of the music's volatility. It was - and is - as if the music was constantly escaping from itself. The beginning of the work is definitely an escape into a new chapter, and that feeling runs through the entire work. In a longer section, the music flies towards a Barcarole, where the piano has a soloist role, and this is probably a result of my recurring dream of Venice - the gondolas in the swaying rhythms of the canals. Hence the Italian title, 'Fuggitivo' - fugitive. Composed in January-February 1875, ?árka is the third symphonic poem in Smetana's six-part cycle Má vlast (My Fatherland). He first published it in a version for piano-duet issued by publisher Urbánek in 1880. The score of the first edition did not appear in print until 1888, four years after Smetana's death.Owing to the many errors in the first edition, Hugh Macdonald has based this new edition on the autograph score with annotations by Adolf Cech, who conducted the premiere on 17 March 1877. Le point de départ de cette pièce fut le tableau de Van Gogh: Champ de blé avec corbeaux, l'un des tout derniers qu'il a peints avant son suicide le 27 juillet 1890, et que l'on a souvent considéré comme annonciateur de ce geste désespéré. Ce tableau m'a immédiatement rappelé ces vers français de Rainer Maria Rilke dans les Quatrains valaisans: 'Chemins qui ne mènent nulle part, entre deux prés, que l'on dirait avec art de leur but détournés, / Chemins qui souvent n'ont devant eux rien d'autre en face / Que le pur espace et la saison.' Des vers qui, eux-mêmes, ont donné leur titre à un ouvrage du philosophe Martin Heidegger, Chemins qui ne mènent nulle part, dont je pourrais dire qu'il est à l'origine de ma vocation: c'est après avoir découvert, durant mes études de philosophie, ce livre, dans lequel Heidegger parle de la dimension métaphysique de la poésie, notamment à partir de l'oeuvre de Rilke, que j'ai choisi d'entrer au Conservatoire de Paris et de me consacrer à la composition. A mes yeux, la musique possède une dimension métaphysique au même titre que la poésie: comme le dit Heidegger 'L'oeuvre d'art ouvre à sa manière l'être de l'étant.' Toutes mes oeuvres tendent à évoquer cette 'troisième dimension' de la musique. L'essentiel d'une oeuvre réside toujours pour moi dans cette tentative de suggérer un autre monde, cet 'ailleurs' qui nous dépasse. A cet égard, Omen fait intervenir - dans son inspiration, non dans son écriture proprement dite - tout un réseau de correspondances qui offre en quelque sorte, une synthèse de ma démarche et de mes préoccupations. L'allusion au tableau de Van Gogh tout d'abord, inscrit cette partition dans la lignée de celles qui m'ont été inspirées par la peinture: mon concerto pour alto était centré autour de Nicolas de Staël, et je viens d'achever une composition pour flûte et ensemble à partir d'un tableau de Turner. Ensuite, il y a la figure même de Van Gogh: son parcours spirituel, tout comme celui de Staël, en font l'une de ces 'comètes', venues d'un autre monde, dont parle la poétesse Marina Tsvetaïeva. Le titre de Omen, qui signifie 'présage' en anglais de même qu'en latin, évoque ainsi le mystérieux et funeste destin de ce peintre visionnaire. Cette idée de 'trajectoire' (qui rejoint ici l'image du 'chemin') est un autre des thèmes qui me sont chers, et elle est également à l'oeuvre dans Omen. L'écriture pour orchestre reste mon mode d'expression privilégié de par la réflexion sur l'organisation de l'espace sonore, sa profondeur, et le travail sur les timbres qu'elle induit: dans cette pièce, l'orchestre devient un univers de mouvement propre à traduire cette idée de tournoiement (la dialectique entre mouvement et immobilité est un autre axe de mon travail depuis quelque temps, notamment avec les cordes) qui, dans le tableau de Van Gogh - avec le vol des corbeaux, ce ciel renversé - revêt une signification évidemment dramatique, et prémonitoire. / contemporain / Répertoire / Orchestre

Haydn's Symphony #26 received its nickname 'Lamentazione? during his lifetime, though it is unclear whether this stems directly from the composer.This work probably originated no later than 1770. Its first and second movements quote excerpts from Gregorian chants used in Holy Week. Pride, pomp, and circumstance of glorious war! It is these words from Shakespeare's Othello that these works by the English composer Sir Edward Elgar fall back on. The work was a sensational success from the very beginning, especially March #1. At its premiere in 1901 under the composer's direction, the audience requested two repeats - in 1902 the words of 'Land of Hope and Glory' were added to the march at the request of Edward VII for his coronation ceremonial. The resulting version is now performed every year at the Last Night of the Proms. Motivated by the success of the first two marches, Elgar composed another three which were performed in 1905, 1907 and 1930. #4 is as formal as #1 whereas the others are of a rather melancholy nature. / Orchestre

?Appalachian Spring? was composed in 1943-44 as a ballet for Miss Martha Graham on a commission from the Elisabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation. It was first performed by Miss Graham and her company at the Coolidge Festival in the Libarary of Congress, Washington, D.C., on October 30, 1994.



The original scoring called for a chamber ensemble of thirteen instruments. The present arrangement for symphony orchestra was made by the composer in the spring of 1945. It is a condensed version of the ballet, retaining all essential features but omitting those sections in which the interest is primarily choreographic.



In 1945 ?Appalachian Spring? received the Pulitzer Prize for music as well as the award of the Music Critics Circle of New York for the outstanding theatrical work of the season. / Partition /
