Bozza (1905-1991) was a brilliant student at the Paris Conservatoire winning prizes for the Violin conducting and composing as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He predominantly composed chamber music for wind but his solo works for the instruments are also held in high esteem such as his Ballade for Trombone and Piano. This Bozza piece was originally composed for conservatoire students displaying the technical skills as well as musicality of the soloist. There is no formal structure to Ballade however the many changes in tempo provide variety throughout. With no distinct musical theme unifying the music it is interesting to note that much of the material of Bozza's Ballade is extracted from orchestral excerpts. Ballade is an ideal performance piece for advanced trombonists.

Philippe Gaubert (1879-1941) was a distinguished performer on the Flute. It comes as no surprise therefore that his compositions for wind instruments are at the forefront of the repertoire  Morceau Symphonique for Tenor Trombone being no exception. French composer Pierre Max Dubois (1930-1995) significantly contributed to the wind repertoire. Procession for Trombone and Piano was published in 1959 and remains prominent in the advanced trombonist's repertoire. Dubois' music is characteristically light-hearted with unusual harmonic and melodic textures. Procession for Trombone and Piano reflects Dubois' compositional characteristics as well as elements of grandeur reflecting the title. A typical performance lasts about four minutes and fifteen seconds. Procession is essential to the advanced trombonist'srepertoire. Dubois' work makes for an exciting and enjoyable performance for players and audiences alike.

This piece was originally written for the trombonist Michael Skitt as the final 'prank' movement of a concerto for trombone and orchestra. By popular request the piece has been given a separate piano part and has since been proved equally entertaining for trombone bassoon or cello! Arthur Pryor was one of the most popular bandsmen of his day. He was Trombone soloist for the famous John Philip Sousa band in the early part of the 20th century. Pryor later organized his own band that was renowned around the world. He was one of the first solo performers to use phonograph recordings to preserve his performances. To this day his recordings of his own works are considered to be some of the best Trombone performances ever recorded. Pryor's works for Trombone are melodic idiomatic and virtuosic. This collection preserves many of his best known compositions like Thoughts of Love and Blue Bells ofScotland but also makes available once again some of his other delightful works.

The Romance for Trombone and Piano was given its premiere at the Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen in 1916 in an Orchestral version and with Axel Jørgensen's friend Anton Hansen as soloist. This fully tonal Scandinavian work of charm intelligence and lyricism was well received though the Orchestral parts were destroyed in the bombings of the Second World War. Jørgensen produced this Trombone and Piano version a few years after the premiere and it continues to enjoy performances and recordings today.

French composer Henri Büsser entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1889. He won the 1893 Prix de Rome and led a highly successful career as a composer conductor teacher and organist. His compositions for a variety of instruments are exceptional Cantabile Et Scherzando for Trombone and Piano being no exception. As reflected in Cantabile Et Scherzando  Büsser's compositional style was sophisticated yet true to the 19th century French tradition. Elements of the Cantabile include include legato phrasing dotted rhythms and triplets superbly contrasted in the Scherzando by staccato rhythms a quick tempo and scalic passages. For all advanced Trombone players Büsser's Cantabile Et Scherzando is essential to a varied repertoire.
