Music from the Motion Picture Soundtrack for Violin Solo. Par BOLOGNE JOSEPH. Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, was born Christmas Day, 1745, on the island of Guadeloupe, then a French colony, in the Caribbean Sea. The son of a wealthy plantation owner and a slave, he rose to unimaginable heights in French society thanks to his excellence in many things including math, literature, and fencing, but most of all, music. He rose to become one of the most popular violinists and composers in France, even hired to provide music lessons for the imperious Marie Antoinette who would become the last queen of France. Bologne's amazing life story came to life in the 2022 film Chevalier. Our matching folio includes original works by Bologne as well as violin solo arrangements of the score by Kris Bowers and featuring Violin Duel by Michael Abels. The book also includes a short biography of Bologne's life story. / Date parution : 2023-10-31/ Recueil / Violon

Par HUMMEL BERTOLD. As an educational and recital piece, Bertold Hummel's Sonatina Op. 35, composed in 1969, has accompanied many a young musician following his or her own path. Having sold a thousand times all over the world, it is one of the composer's best-known works and has been included in the repertoire list for the 'Jugend musiziert' competition by the German Music Council. The three movements are characterized by warmth and exciting rhythms: in the powerful Maestoso, the sonority of the main theme is contrasted with a lyrical side theme - the recapitulation ends with an impulsive Fugato. The second movement Elegie consists of a single soulful melody over spherical harmonies of the piano. As a highlight, playful ease, marching rhythms and dramatic intensifications alternate in quick succession in the Finale vivace, followed by wild arpeggios that conclude the piece.
Originally composed for violin, versions for viola and violoncello were already commonly used. To mark its 50th birthday, Simrock / Boosey and Hawkes present the work in a revised, newly set edition. Written in the 1990s by the composer himself and now available for the first time, the versions for alto and tenor saxophone are valuable additions to the repertoire for beginning instrumentalists./ Répertoire / Violon et Piano

Par SZATHMARY ZSIGMOND. In ancient times, language and music were already regarded as an inseparable unit. Homer's epic poems, for example, were sung, and in the highly developed art of rhetoric, words were used to communicate reason, while music spoke to the soul. Since Monteverdi's time, musical delineation of text has become even more important: rhetoric terms such as 'exclamatio”, 'saltus duriusculus”, and 'climax” were applied to music in order to render the emotional content of the text in even more expressive ways. Szathmàry used this compositional method as a model when he drafted his work for violin 'Rhetorica”. He wrote about this work: 'My aim was to instill a 'speaking quality”into even the tiniest musical elements in order to allow for the music to become a powerful narration of the moments experienced in a human life with all its highs and lows - entirely without the use of words.”/ Répertoire / Violon
