for String Quartet op. 35a. Par SUK JOSEF. Josef Suk played second violin in the Bohemian String Quartet. Since 1914 the ensemble was obliged to perform the Austrian national anthem at the opening of every concert. Suk decided to supplement this obligatory piece with a work inspired by the ancient sacred Bohemian 'St. Wenceslas” hymn. The hymn's message - a plea for the well-being of the Czech people, directed at their patron saint - was immediately understood by the audience. The Bohemian String Quartet performed this single-movement Meditation for the first time on 27 September 1914 - the premiere of the version for string orchestra followed on 22 November 1914, played by the Czech Philharmonic. That same year the piece was published by Fr. A. Urbánek together with arrangements for piano and organ. This first Urtext edition, prepared by the Suk scholar Zdenek Nouza, is published in two scorings, one for string quartet (BA 9583 - study score TP 583) and another for string orchestra (BA 9584). Type : score and parts Nombre de Pages : 16 There is hardly any other lullaby in the field of classical music - apart from Brahms' 'Guten Abend, gute Nacht' - that has gained such popularity as George Gershwin's (1898-1937) 'Summertime'. It is a song from his opera Porgy and Bess“ which was premiered in New York on 10 October 1935 with only moderate success at first. Every important jazz musician insisted on presenting his own version of this rather evocative and catchy song with which Clara rocks her child to sleep at the beginning of the opera. The present version now offers the opportunity to play this famous 'Summertime' with a string quartet (and double-bass ad lib.) or string orchestra - let's swing!

Par VASKS PETERIS. The Latvian composer Peteris Vasks, who is known for his atmospheric pieces for string orchestra, “Cantabile”, “Musica dolorosa” and “Voices”, is concentrating increasingly on chamber music: his latest works are the “Partita” for cello and piano, the “Fifth String Quartet” and a piano quartet. Vasks has brought elements of ancient and folk traditions in Latvian music into his compositions. While most of his works have programmatic titles relating to natural processes, Vasks is not concerned with a poetic homage to Nature, nor with depiction of landscape as an aesthetic ideal. Since graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, David Brooker has been a performer on the viola and a music educator with a special interest in using ensemble music in instrumental teaching. His first two books, 'Stringplay” and 'Stringplay Around the World” reflected this, providing resources for elementary string orchestra and now 'String Trios from Around the World” takes the idea to the smaller ensemble of violin, viola and cello. This book of folk music from four continents, with an emphasis on love songs, keeps to the spirit of the original pieces while making the music idiomatic and fun to play. The parts are equal in difficulty (easy to intermediate) - in fact, David says that, as a violist himself, he has made sure that the violinist doesn't get all the tunes! Par FREEMAN ALEX. Alex Freeman found initial inspiration for his string quartet (2015) in a series of photographs a geologist friend showed him of en échelon veins in rock formations. The open strings punctuated with pizzicato unisons that begin the single-movement work call to mind something crystalline and shimmering, which is immediately infused with tumbling lyrical lines in something of a rapid caccia technique throughout. The middle of the work becomes more suspended in slower material loosely based on a technique of prolation canon, comprises layers of free, expressive, lyrical, and even elegiac music moving at different speeds. As the work concludes, the materials converge in a rhythmically pulsating stasis and an almost chorale-like statement. Duration: c. 13' This product includes the score and the parts (A4 sized). American-Finnish composer Alex Freeman (b.1972) has established himself among the foremost composers of choral music in Finland. A dedicated citizen of his musical community, a teacher, and a choral singer himself, he composes music that reflects an appreciation for a wide range of aesthetics and a passion for communicating with listeners and performers. In his choral works, in particular, we find music that aims to be sonorous, melodic, and resonant, but is always crafted to carefully avoid the cliches that can burden conventional tonality.
