This dreamlike and evocative piece from Peter Maxwell Davies was originally composed for Flute and orchesta. Here it is presented as Flute with Piano reduction and still captures the wonder and sanctuary of the composer's home surrounded by seabirds and seals that fire the imagination in childlike ways evoking images of mermaids and angels. The Flute solo is both tranquil and highly virtuosic and is well supported by the Piano accompaniment. The piecewas first performed in May 1999 at the Royal Concert Hall Dublin.

Flûte ou flûte à bec et clavecin ou orgue ou piano Ce recueil s'adresse aux musiciens débutants, jouant d'un instrument mélodique (flûte à bec soprano et / ou alto, flûte traversière, violon, hautbois) ou d'un clavier (clavecin, piano, orgue), désireux de jouer ensemble un répertoire varié pour voix mélodique et accompagnement, constitué de pièces du XVIIIe siècle et de musiques traditionnelles. Nathalie Rotstein-Raguis, flûtiste à bec et Zdenka Ostadalova, claveciniste, ont enseigné plusieurs années au conservatoire de Chilly-Mazarin. Leur expérience pédagogique et leur collaboration musicale étroite les ont amenées à constituer un répertoire adapté au niveau des jeunes élèves de leurs classes. La Méthode de Flûte à bec Soprano éditée aux Editions Lemoine, en fut la première réalisation. Ce nouveau recueil s'inscrit dans le même esprit, à savoir offrir aux élèves des pièces faciles et variées leur permettant de jouer non seulement à deux mais également en ensemble (ajout possible de violoncelle, viole de gambe ou basson doublant la main gauche du clavier pour renforcer la basse) afin de développer très tôt la pratique de la musique d'ensemble, si enrichissante musicalement et humainement. L'attention des auteures s'est portée sur le choix des pièces et leur niveau afin que des élèves de 1er cycle puissent les jouer avec plaisir, tout en expérimentant une première approche stylistique de la musique baroque. From among Reinecke?s abundant oeuvre, a very few works have from the beginning maintained their position in the concert repertoire. First and foremost among these is the Flute Sonata op. 167 with the sobriquet ?Undine?, composed in 1882 and inspired by the eponymous fairy tale by Friedrich de la Motte-Fouqué about the ill-fated love of a mermaid. It is not, however, meant programmatically, but rather, like Schumann?s poetic titles, as a framework of associations for this highly romantic, in places very virtuoso sonata in traditional, four-movement form. As the autograph is lost, the printed editions form the basis for the new critical edition of this sonata, which is solidly anchored in the flute repertoire and is now finally available as a Henle Urtext edition.

André Jolivet (1905-1974) established his love for composition from a young age. This remained throughout his life and he held the post of Professor of Composition from 1966-1970 at the Paris Conservatoire. Fantaisie Caprice for Flute and Piano was published in 1954 and remains highly regarded. Jolivet himself a cellist wished to explore composition for all instruments and therefore has a considerable number of works in all fields. The composer's style is also known for its spirituality and the desire to associate the everyday with the magical and the human with the universal. Jolivet draws on acoustics andatonality as heard in his Caprice Fantasy. The piece requires advanced skills due to its use of complex rhythms and exploited tonality. For all advanced flautists Jolivet provides an exciting alternative piece for the instrument's repertoire.

The instantly recognisable and ever-popular Méditation from the opera Thaïs by Jules Massenet (1842-1912) remains a strong favourite in the classical repertoire superbly arranged for Flute and Piano by French flautist Paul Taffanel. Massenet first studied music with his mother before entering the Paris Conservatoire. He is best known for his operas of which he composed over thirty. Thaïs was first performed at the Opéra Garnier in Paris in 1894 and continues to be one of the composer's most performed operas. The famous Méditation isan intermezzo originally for Violin and Orchestra which has since been arranged for many different instruments making it a frequent concert piece. The arrangement for Flute and Piano remains in the original key of D major and displays the passionate religious intentions. Taffanel's adaptions include breath marks phrasing changing octaves for some notes and articulation among other aspects. Massenet's Méditation is challenging through its use of lyricism in the upper register yet it remains a favoured and popular piece in the Flute's repertoire.
