Par GOODALL HOWARD. Shackelton's Cross was inspired by a painting created in 1957 by the English artist Edward Seago (1910-1974). The title refers to a cross which was erected to the memory of Sir Ernest Shackleton, who led a number of explorations to the Antarctic. Shackleton died in 1922 whilst on a Polar expedition, and the cross can be found on a promontory at the entrance to the bay at Grytviken Whaling Station in South Georgia. The painting is owned by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, and was part of an exhibition at Buckingham Palace from October 2011 to April 2012. Originally scored for oboe, trumpet and small orchestra, Daniel Hall's sensitive arrangement follows the composer's alternative version for solo trumpet and organ, created for Crispian Steele-Perkins (trumpet) and David Goode (organ). / Répertoire / Ensemble de Cuivres

Par HESKETH KENNETH. In Danceries , by Kenneth Hesketh, the melodies themselves are a mixture of old and new. Where the old occurs it has been adapted in mood and composition and is often interspersed with completely new material. The contemporary harmonies and rhythms bring a breath of new into these themes and add drama to the suite. The first movement, Lull Me Beyond Thee , is gentle and lilting, almost a barcarole, this movement is very much a reverie. The original tune had the name Poor Robin's Maggot , a rather disconcerting title. Maggot, however, in seventeenth-century parlance meant whim or fancy. The second, Catching of Quails , is a colourful, buoyant scherzo on an original melody. The thematic material is shuttled around the band to contrast with full-blooded tuttis. The last few bars fade to almost nothing, before a final surprise! My Lady's Rest is a tender pavane, also on an original melody, with Moorish leanings. Beautiful solo passages, expressive contrapuntal writing and warm tuttis provide an opportunity to show off the most lyrical of playing. The final movement, Quodling's Delight is a clever combination of the 17th century melody, Goddesses , with an original contrasting melody, creating a rousing and exuberant finale to the work. / Niveau : Assez Facile / Répertoire / Brass Band

Performance d'oscarisé de Julie Andrews comme le personnage de titre est exceptionnel et Bert de Dick Van Dyke, le ramoneur, est tout aussi étonnant (malgré cet accent cockney comique). Andrew Duncan a mis sur pied une suite symphonique très agréable de la musique du film y compris Chim chim cher-ee - nourrir les oiseaux - Let's go voler un cerf-volant - A spoonful of sugar - soeur Suffragette et l'inimitable Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious ! / TV, Film, Comédie musicale / Répertoire / Brass Band

The titles can be presented on the programme as separate works but the Universal Band Collection can also be performed as a complete suite. From a didactic point of view it is a suitable work to teach musicians something about the structure in music. For this purpose not only the big structure but also the small structure was kept very clear. Western Girl : A girl from the west of the USA rides her horse across the prairie, dreaming of her future. The rough structure: introduction - theme in a blues scale - the same thing in a different instrumentation - finale. Just a ballad : A balladin pop style with a rough A-B-A form. First there is the introduction of the main theme (A), then follows a tenor melody in minor with a rhythmical reference to the main theme (B). Finally there is the main melody, performed tutti with a different rhythm in the drums (A'). Play the Game : An English saying meaning: play fairly. Playful music in up-tempo with a wink to China, where almost all games are manufactured nowadays. Once again an A-B-A structure here. San Diego : A Mexican fugitive enjoys his freedom in America but also remembers his place of birth with melancholy. A sad minor melody with a straight trendy beat appears twice. The second time it has a slightly different instrumentation, in which the muted trumpets represent the Mexican feeling. Final Dance : Eventually there is a dance with an introduction in renaissance style, followed by a fast dance in rock style. Lascia ch’io pianga est un air extrait de Rinaldo, premier opéra londonien de Georg Friedrich Haendel sur un livret de Giacomo Rossi d’après un scénario d’Aaron Hill. Quinze jours de travail suffirent à Haendel pour achever la partition. Le résultat est en réalité une vaste adaptation de plusieurs oeuvres antérieures. Rinaldo a été créé à Londres en 1711. Les décors féeriques et chevaleresques étaient éblouissants pour l’époque, et c’est sans doute pour cela que l’oeuvre fut plébiscitée par le public. Dans le merveilleux jardin du palais enchanté d’Armide (l’alliée d’Argante, le rival de Rinaldo), Almirène (la promise de Rinaldo) pleure sa captivité dansson air Lascia ch’io pianga, l’un des plus beaux qu’Haendel ait écrits.
