Also known as 'The Banks O'Doon' Ye Banks And Braes is a Scottish song written in 1791 by Robert Burns. In this song a young woman wanders the banks of the Doon river in Ayrshire. She is surrounded by the beauty of nature yet laments the cruelty that the world has shown to her - she can no longer take delight as she once did in the plants and flowers as they remind her of happier times spent by the 'bonnie' banks with her lover. The man that she cared for stole her innocence and left her and now she feels as if even the birds are mocking her with their chants. This setting for SA choir by Chris Hutchings breathesnew life into the traditional tune. The poignant lyrics are complemented by a beautiful gently rolling melody. Burns wrote three versions of Ye Banks And Braes all published the same year. This setting uses the lyrics that are currently known as the third version: 'Ye banks and braes o' bonnie Doon How can ye bloom sae fresh and fair; How can ye chant ye little birds And I sae weary fu' o' care!'

Inspired by the memoir 'The Story of the Trapp Family Singers' by Maria von Trapp Rodgers and Hammerstein's The Sound Of Music first opened its doors on Broadway in 1959 and was turned into a popular film in 1965. The musical tells the story of Maria who is studying to become a nun at Nonnberg Abbey in Salzburg yet is struggling to fit in there due to her youthful enthusiasm energetic nature and lack of discipline. Believing that she might be happier in the outside world the Mother Abbess sends her to thevilla of a widowed naval officer to be governess to his seven children. After bringing love and music into the lives of the family Maria marries the officer and together with the children they flee the Nazi regime that has taken over their homeland. One of the musical's most cherished numbers So Long Farewell is the song the von Trapp children sing to bid their guests good night at the party at their villa. It is also sung as a reprise by the family at the Salzburg concert. To the Nazis present they are simply bringing the night's performance to an end but the external audience is aware that they are in fact also saying goodybe to their beloved Austria as they secretly plot their escape over the border to Switzerland. The Finnish folk melody's hymntune in this piece is called “Nyland.” It is a simple and gentle strain that Glenn Wonacott has decorated delightfully. The piano accompaniment has a Baroque feel to it as does the lovely obbligato part. Using a text by Anna Waring about God's reassuring presence at all times the sentiment is reminiscent of Bach's “Sheep May Safely Graze.” Excellent as a children's anthem and also with any 2-Part voices in a worship service. Easy to medium.
