In the staging, Roxie is portrayed as Billy’s mechanical puppet, which is why the music has a certain mechanical, even clockwork quality to it. Never To Forget. Never To Forget is a powerfully emotive choral work written in honour of the NHS health and care workers in the UK who died caring for others during the COVID-19 pandemic. The text comprises their names, each sung separately in turn, in a poignant and moving homage. The piece is designed as a living tribute, to memorialise their dedication and sacrifice through each performance. This is a work of remembrance, respect and gratitude for these courageous workers, never to be forgotten. Composed in 1948 Kodály's compelling Geneva Psalm 50 uses the original psalm tune as a cantus firmus while adapting the original Calvinist psalter's rhythms to the Hungarian language. In addition to Geneva Psalm 50 he also composed motets from Psalms 114 and 121. Zoltán Kodály's complete choral works for mixed voices were published in a new extended edition in 2018 (Z. 6725 and Z. 6725A). This volume containing 51 compositions has been edited by the renowned conductor Péter Erdei one of the most devoted interpreters of Kodály's choral works. The new edition takes into consideration the manuscript sources for the compositions housed in the Kodály Archives in Budapest. Thepublication features new easily-legible music scores edited on uniform principles. For better readability the new edition is printed in a slightly larger format than previous editions.The present publication is an offprint from the renewed edition of Kodály's complete choral works for mixed voices. It has the same format as the volume and has been printed on excellent-quality pale-yellow paper.

The struggle and suffering described in spirituals go hand in hand with an overwhelming sense of hope for a better life. Deep River is one of the most popular spirituals; its long-phrase melody calls for sustained breath control and a real sense of shape. Much contrast can be made between the first and second sections of the melody, and enjoy the more adventurous harmony around the words ‘where all is peace’ (both times!). The idiomatic ‘rippling’ piano part should be played very legato, but with a steady, clear tempo. 'Another Look at Harmony' is a project started in 1975. The approach has been to link directly rhythmic and harmonic structure. In doing so easily audible root movement (chords or 'changes') was chosen in order that the clarityof their relationship could easily be heard. Here as in earlier periods of Western music melodic material is for the most part a function or result of the harmony. However it is clear that some of the priorities of Westernmusic (harmony/melody first then rhythm) have been reversed.

Par FARKAS FERENC. The musical material for these pieces was taken from the 17th century Kulcsar Melodiarium (Sarospatak, 1770), Novak Melodiarium (Sarospatak) and Patak Melodiarium (1798). Both the Latin and the Hungarian versions of these short character pieces were set to music. Rachel Portman's Magnificat And Nunc Dimittis for SATB choir and Organ accompaniment. Born in west Sussex England Rachel Portman began composing at age 14 and read music at Oxford University. She gained experience writing music for drama in BBC and Channel 4 films including Mike Leigh's Four Days In July and Jim Henson's Storyteller series.Her extensive film work includes scores for Never Let me Go The Joy Luck Club Benny and June and the Manchurian Candidate. She won an Academy award for her score for Emma and Academy nominations for Chocolat and The Cider House Rules.She has written a musical of LittleHouse on the Prairie as well as an opera of Saint Exupery's The Little Prince for Houston Grand Opera and The Water Diviner a dramatic choral symphony commissioned for the BBC Proms concerts. She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2010 New Year Honours.

'From the Beginning of the World was commissioned by the Cardinall’s Musick and premiered at Cadogan Hall on the 20th July 2015 in the first of the 2015 BBC Proms Chamber Music Concerts. The concert launched The Tallis Edition a new project by the ensemble with an aim to throw new light on Tallis’s work and part of the commission brief was that my new piece should be a homage to this great English polyphonist. I spent several weeks in libraries attempting to find a suitable text eventually settling on excerpts from Tycho Brahe’s German Treatise on the Great Comet of 1577. Whether Tallis knew about the comet is unknown of course but this seismic event to me seemed emblematic of all the great changes that occurred during his lifetime in areas such as religion the calendar and time-keeping (finding out that Tallis lived out his last days in Greenwich was an extra bonus). The text also seems to speak to contemporary times: whilst Brahe may have thought the comet’s birth would cause the sun to ‘bring unnatural heat’ nowadays we know that its ‘venom [will be] spewed over the lands’ due to mankind’s continued pillaging of the earth’s natural resources. Yet our political ‘pseudo prophets’ prefer to distract us with an austerity delusion rather than confront a reality perpetuated by certain corporations for whom ‘seek[ing] their own honour’ is of primary value. The music itself is very influenced by Tallis and canons and imitation abound. During my time as a ‘cellist at the Yehudi Menuhin School I performed Ralph Vaughan Williams’s Fantasia on a Theme of Thomas Tallis many times and so From the Beginning of the World which also uses Tallis’s Third Mode Melody from the English Hymnal is really a homage to both composers.' - Cheryl Frances-Hoad.

Most choral musicians know the setting of this Robert Frost text by American composer Randall Thompson. Here Michael Larkin sets the same text for mixed voices with piano (unlike the Thompson setting for treble voices.) This is an excellent work for high school choirs. Try it for a spring concert.

Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show is set amongst a larger-than-life junkyard playground and is alive with our favourite feline characters, including Skimbleshanks, the railway cat.
