From his Album for Male Voices, Op. 30, a set of 12 Norwegian folksongs set for chorus with male leads, The Great Angelic Host was arranged for double mixed chorus by Eyvind H. Bull, and has here been edited by Walter Aschenbrenner. We are pleased to make this exquisite choral work available once again. David Monrad Johansen, in his published life of Grieg, was moved to say, In The Great Angelic Host true religious feeling has been given the purest expression. This composition shows what wonderful material we have right at hand on which to base a future church music for Norway..

Life has loveliness to sell, All beautiful and splendid things, Blue waves whitened on a cliff, Soaring fire that sways and sings, And children's faces looking up Holding wonder in a cup. Life has loveliness to sell, Music like a curve of gold, Scent of pine trees in the rain, Eyes that love you, arms that hold, And for your spirit's still delight, Holy thoughts that star the night. Spend all you have for loveliness, Buy it and never count the cost; For one white singing hour of peace Count many a year of strife well lost, And for a breath of ecstacy Give all you have been, or could be. --Barter from Love Songs (1918) by Sara Teasdale Sara Teasdale (1884-1933) was an American poet whose short, personal lyrics are noted for their classical simplicity and quiet intensity. Teasdale was born in St. Louis, Missouri and traveled to Chicago as a young woman, where she grew acquainted with Harriet Monroe and the literary circle around Poetry. Teasdale wrote seven books of poetry in her lifetime and received public admiration for her well-crafted lyrical poetry which centered on a woman's changing perspectives of beauty, love, life, and death. Jacob Narverud (b. 1986) is an American composer, arranger, and conductor. A native Kansan, Jacob is the Founder/Artistic Director of the Tallgrass Chamber Choir, a professional ensemble of musicians from across the Great Plains. This anthem is set for a divided choir and also includes a brief solo for soprano. While Mr. Neswick is well-known for his exuberant personality in his anthems, this piece demonstrates a lyrical side that is most appealing. The vocal ranges are moderate in scope and that is achieved here. The harmonies are slightly challenging to the ear, yet they support the text in a most convincing manner. This work should find its way into the repertories of accomplished choirs, particularly for the Lenten season.

Guts and Grace considers courage and determination as essentially private qualities, mothered by dark necessity, but on occasion needing to step up publicly, especially in the sporting arena, and roar. This movement is intense and charged with emotion and gives opportunity for sections of the choir to shine individually, as well as a beautiful, soaring soprano solo section in the middle.

Robert Schumann's musical setting of sixteen poems from Heine's cyklus has inspired Jennefelt to this work, which however uses totally different means of expression. Instead of the week, lyric mood is here anguish, powerlessnes and irony expressed.

This effective setting of the poetry of Laurence Binyon cleverly conveys the sacrifice and sadness of war. The sensitive treatment of the text is the star here, with brilliant and moving passages carefully contrasting the more solemn moments.

Stacey Gibbs captures the soul of each Spiritual he arranges. The essense of the song is unchanged, yet something new and fresh appears. It is the spiritual we know and love, yet it glistens like never before. This 8-part setting continues that tradition and is an excellent choice for college or community choirs. Medium in difficulty.

for SSAATTBB and organ (ad lib.) Born 200 years ago this year and orphaned at the age of 3, Sterndale Bennett was brought up by his grandfather in Cambridge, where he sang in the choir of King's College before entering the Royal Academy of Music to study the piano at the age of 10. He was later to become Professor of Music at Cambridge and Principal of the RAM. This fine eight-part setting of verses from Psalm 71, written towards the end of his life, explores imitative and antiphonal textures.
