In 1802 Beethoven wrote a cycle of six lieder on the poetry of Christian Gellert. The fourth of these Die Ehre Gottes Aus Der Natur became popular as Choral work in a hymn-like setting arranged for various voicings. The English words were provided by Rev J Troutbeck and their rhythm respects the original German. Creation’s Hymn gained a great following in its time and is still a frequent feature on Choral programs.

Candlemas Eve (R. 96) was written in 1949. It is a madrigal for Male Voice Choir (TTBB) with a Piano reduction provided for rehearsal purposes. The text comes from a poem by the English poet Robert Herrick (1591-1674) which extols the joy of how the fresh Spring foliage comes forth to replace the winter evergreens. Ernest J Moeran (1894-1950) was an English composer who followed the tradition of R. Vaughan Williams and John Ireland by collecting preserving and using many folk songs mainly from Norfolk Suffolk and Ireland.

Mozart's Twelfth Mass (K. Anh. 232) was a bestseller in the 1800s in both Britain and the United States and undoubtedly helped in the popularisation of Mozart's works among the general public. However it isnow widely accepted that the mass was not in fact written by the great Maestro leading to its rejection by many professional performers. It has however remained popular with many amateur choral societies on both sides of theAtlantic. The Gloria is the only part of the mass that might have actually been written by Mozart. It has been arranged for Male Voice Choir (TTBB) with Organ or Piano by Percy E Fletcher with English translation by J. S. Stallybrass.

The idea for the Sailors’ Chorus came to Wagner in 1839 aboard ship in the safety of a fjord after having fled from a storm at sea. The chanting of the crew as it echoed off the fjord’s granite cliffs inspired the composer to create this Chorus with its accented rhythms.The Sailors' Chorus is scored for men’s Chorus TTBB. Ralph Vaughan Williams was an English composer. His works include operas ballets chamber music secular and religious vocal pieces and orchestral compositions including nine symphonies written over nearly fifty years. Strongly influenced by Tudor music and English folk-song his output marked a decisive break in British music from its German-dominated style of the 19th century.Vaughan Williams was born to a well-to-do family with strong moral views and a progressive social outlook. Throughout his life he sought to be of service to his fellow citizens and believed in making music as available as possible to everybody. He wrote many works for amateur and studentperformance. He was musically a late developer not finding his true voice until his late thirties; his studies in 1907 08 with the French composer Maurice Ravel helped him clarify the textures of his music.
