Seven Songs For Medium Voice-Madeleine Dring (1923-1977) was an English composer and actress. She studied Violin Voice and Composition at the Royal College of Music where her teachers included Ralph Vaughan Williams Herbert Howells and Gordon Jacob. Her Vocal works were collected and posthumously published by Thames in the 1990s. Seven Songs for Medium Voice was published in 1993 as Dring Volume 4. It is a wonderful collection of songs with various compositional dates all scored for Medium Voice and Piano accompaniment.

Mittlere Stimme / Medium Voice-As a continuation of the new Urtext edition of the Schubert lieder Walther Dürr has now edited volume five for high medium and low voices. Volumes 1 to 4 of this edition contain mainly lieder which Schubert himself saw into print (in his own choice and order) and in the fourth volume works from the last two years of his life are included. The lieder in volume 5 onwards are strictly presented in the order of Deutsch's Thematic Catalogue which means that in principle they are arranged chronologically.The lieder in volume five were composed in the years 1811 to 1814. The first 'Hagars Klage' (D 5) dated 30 March 1811 is also his first complete surviving song. Thefirst eleven lieder are evidence of his early studies (1811 1813/14). During this period Schubert immersed himself in Johann Rudolf Zumsteeg's ballads and lieder and wrote Italian arias during his composition lessons with Antonio Salieri. He also composed a single strophic song ('Klaglied' D 23) which the only one of these songs was published shortly after his death in November 1830 as op. 131 3. His apprentice work as it were was the major ballade 'Der Taucher' (D 77) which was composed between 1813 and roughly the beginning of 1815. Probably not by chance his first complete opera ('Des Teufels Lustschloss' D 84) was written at the same time. Six Poetic Songs-Donald Swann is best known as one half of the comic duo Flanders and Swann who dominated the West End and Broadway stages in the late 1950s and 1960s. Though less recognised he was also a leading exponent of the lyric song having reinterpreted the English art-song tradition exemplified by Parry Quilter Warlock and others in his own distinctive and exotic way. This second volume of his songs for Medium Voice and Piano features a range of styles and moods that fit with the diversity of the poems he has set and demonstrate his sensitivity to the setting of texts to music. op. 7 Hol. 81B / Six Songs-Hector Berlioz: Les nuits d'Ete for Solo Voice & Orchestra Op.7 Hol.81B . Version for medium voice. BA 5786-90: Vocal score voice & piano Berlioz composed these songs in 1840–41 between the composition of Roméo et Juliette and La damnation de Faust. The poems were taken from a collection entitled La comédie de la mort by Théophlie Gautier published in 1838. The songs were for mezzo-soprano or tenor with piano accompaniment and were published as a cycle under the title Les nuits d’été in 1841. The second and fourth songs Le spectre de la rose and Absence were performed a few times at that period and Absence was sung twice in February 1843 by Marie Recio on Berlioz’s first tour of Germany. For Marie who later became his second wife Berlioz at once orchestrated the song for mezzo-soprano and small orchestra. A dozen years later Berlioz orchestrated the remaining five songs of the cycle which appeared in its orchestral form in 1856. Henry Purcell (1659-1695) held numerous appointments at the Royal Court and Westminster Abbey and is considered by many to be the greatest ever English-born composer. His prolific work covered all fields: orchestral ecclesiastical operatic theatrical incidental and chamber music were all enriched by his output. Come And Trip It is an aria from the 1740 work L'Allegro il Penseroso ed il Moderato (HWV 55) based on a poem by John Milton. It is a graceful movement in the Minuet style often referred to as a 'Dance Song'. It has been arranged for Medium Voice and Piano by Mary Carmichael. 

After Schubert?s death in 1828 his brother Ferdinand passed on thirteen songs based on texts by Ludwig Rellstab and Heinrich Heine to the publisher Haslinger. Schubert had only composed them shortly before his death in August 1828. During his lifetime Schubert actually wanted to publish the two groups of Lieder separately. However the Heine and Rellstab songs are indeed closely related. Haslinger added a fourteenth Lied ?Die Taubenpost? based on a text by Johann Gabriel Seidl which Schubert had composed at the same time as ?Der Hirt auf dem Felsen? (D 965) one month before his death but which in no way bears any relation to the Rellstab and Heine Lieder. Thiscollection was published posthumously by Haslinger early in May 1829 and it was named Schwanengesang traditionally the term given to an artist?s last work before his death.
