(+)
Carl Maria von Weber's fame rests mainly on ?Der Freischütz'. The unprecedented success of this opera overshadowed all his other works and contributed to their increasing fall into oblivion. Certain works such as ?Preciosa', ?Oberon', and ?Euryanthe', the overtures, solo concertos and piano sonatas, the lieder and chamber works enjoyed great popularity and were widely known in Germany and abroad as late as the second half of the 19th century. However, any chance of a revival of Weber's influential and substantial oeuvre was wasted in the 1920s, when a complete edition - begun by Hans Joachim Moser and with potential contributors including Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein and Richard Strauss - failed after the third volume.Ever since there have been numerous attempts to restart a complete edition of Weber's works, but as this kind of project would have required the co-operation of scholars from both sides of the inter-German border, the political situation after 1945 was not conducive to any such enterprise. Careful negotiations led to the first tangible steps in the 1980s. The intention, right from the beginning, was to place Weber's work in context, and not to separate his musical output from his influential work as a writer, critic and organiser in the musical field, but to publish his compositions together with his letters, diaries and other literary output as the best way to document the cross-fertilisation between his musical, literary and practical activities.Since the German re-unification both working-parties concerned - at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, and at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, Detmold/Paderborn - have co-operated on the complete edition of the musical works (c. 45 volumes in 10 series: sacred music - cantatas, odes and other occasional works - stage works - lieder and vocal works - orchestral works - chamber music - music for piano - piano reductions - miscellanea, arrangements and orchestrations - works of doubtful attribution). The diaries (6-8 vols.) are edited in Berlin and the letters (8-10 vols.) and other writings (2 vols.) in Detmold. This complete edition aims to be a reliable basis of scholarly debate as well as for the authentic performance practice of Carl Maria von Weber's music. Conforming to the standards of recent historico-critical editions, the textual material will be based on all available authentic sources, accompanied by a detailed documentation of the genesis and a list of variants for each work. The musicological importance of the works will be evaluated by placing them in their historical context, the presentation of their genesis, history and Critical Commentaries. The letters, writings and diaries will be treated as inter-related and relevant to each other in the commentaries, therefore readers should benefit from a wealth of concise information and cross-references. / Score

Mozart, Wolfgang Amadeus La clemenza di Tito K. 621 Facsimile of Mozart's autograph score The Seven Great Operas in Facsimile Editions of Mozart?s Autograph Scores ?Idomeneo?, ?Die Entführung aus dem Serail?, ?Le nozze di Figaro?, ?Don Giovanni?, ? Così fan tutte ?, ?Die Zauberflöte ?, ?La clemenza di Tito? ? Mozart?s seven great operas, his brilliant contribution to music theatre and world culture, are unequalled in their depth of human characterisation and musical expression. Through happy coincidence, all seven opera scores have survived almost complete in Mozart?s manuscript. The Packard Humanities Institute (PHI, Los Altos , California ) has now embarked on producing a facsimile edition of the seven autograph scores. Mozart scholars, libraries and of course all lovers of Mozart?s stage works now have the opportunity of acquiring these priceless manuscripts in flawless reproductions. At the same time, all risks about preserving Mozart?s legacy for the world of music are taken care of. The Packard Humanities Institute (PHI) charitable foundation, known for its philanthropic programmes in the arts and sciences, has forged an ideal cooperation for the Mozart project. Under the scholarly direction of an editorial board (Ulrich Konrad , David Packard, Wolfgang Rehm , Christoph Wolff; General editor Dietrich Berke) the International Mozarteum Foundation Salzburg and the libraries where Mozart?s manuscripts are held are working together with the Packard Humanities Institute. The production of the volumes is exquisite, for the digitalization of the manuscripts has been undertaken using the latest technology, which allows for an astounding level of authenticity and precision in detail. The printing follows the uncompromisingly high standards demanded by the edition. All seven volumes include essays on the history of literature and ideas by Hendrik Birus , Hans Joachim Kreutzer and Robert Miller as well as musicological introductions by leading Mozart scholars in German and English. The facsimile edition will be distributed by Bärenreiter- Verlag . - consolidation of Mozart manuscripts held in different places - highest level of precision in reproduction and authenticity of colour through use of the latest technology - unique offer thanks to project sponsorship by the Packard Humanities Institute (Los Altos, California) Precision in reproduction thanks to cutting edge technology In preparing the manuscripts for reproduction, equipment was used in line with the highest technical standards currently available. Mozart?s original manuscripts of the seven operas are held by several libraries. For five of the operas, the different acts have even ended up in different libraries following World War II. Thus, the autograph of Act I of ? Così fan tutte ? is in the Jagiellonian Library in Kraków and the second act in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin ? Preußischer Kulturbesitz . In order to achieve a uniformly high level of precision in reproduction and authenticity of colour both within a work and for all seven editions, the use of the same technical equipment in all the different places was a prerequisite. Specialist from the Salzburg firm ? Kirchberger Photography? were employed, were provided with the latest equipment by the Packard Humanities Institute and also given special additional training in the modern technology by specialists in the USA. Proofs of each edition were compared with the original in each location and improved until the likeness could not be bettered in all details. Mozart?s music and text notation is reproduced extremely clearly, and even those places where Mozart corrected or had rubbed out marks he had already made, appear in these editions in a previously unmatched transparency.

New Edition of the Complete Works V/5. Par SCHUBERT FRANZ. In addition to his symphonies, Franz Schubert also wrote and handed down to posterity a total of eight finished concert overtures (two of them in two versions) between ca. 1811 and 1819. With the exception of the “Overture in D” (D 4) to the comedy “Der Teufel als Hydraulicus” (“The Devil as Engineer”) and the “Overture in D” (D 26), whose original title was cut out of the manuscript, they are all compositions which are associated neither with a drama nor a programme. They thus embody the type of the pure concert overture at an astonishingly early point in the history of music and are also in keeping with this terminologically by virtue of explicitly not having any other appellations whatsoever in the title: the epithet common for two works “in the Italian style” was only added posthumously. Our volume sees publication for the first time of the “Italian Overture in C” (D 591) in its two authentic versions, this being in contrast to the performance tradition based on a potpourri of the sources. The widely handed-down but corrupted musical course of the “Overture in D” (D 590) has likewise been rectified for the first time. Overshadowed by his symphonies, Schubert’s overtures have hitherto been largely undervalued both in their reception and in musical practice – including the “Overture in E minor” (D 648), which sees Schubert venturing into radically new spheres of expression to a greater extent than in virtually any other of his works./ Recueil / Orchestre

(+)
Edizione critica a cura di Claudio Toscani (testi in italiano e inglese). La fille du régiment, always one of Donizetti?s most popular stage works, was first performed at the Théâtre de l?Opéra-Comique in Paris on 11 February 1840. It was composed by Donizetti, to a libretto by Saint-Georges and Bayard, in 1839, for the French debut of soprano Juliette Bourgeois. Later on, Donizetti prepared an Italian version as well, using a libretto adaptation by Calisto Bassi, and making several alterations to the French version of the score (the premiere of the new version, entitled La figlia del reggimento, took place at La Scala Theatre in Milano on 3 October 1840). The opera enjoyed tremendous success ? at the Opéra-Comique alone, more than one thousand performances were given between 1840 and 1917 ?, and was widely staged in the major European and American opera houses. Owing to the lack of available autograph music sources ? only a few score sketches and fragments survive, kept at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France ?, the principal source for this edition is the printed score prepared by the Parisian publisher Georges Schonenberger during the spring of 1840. Together with the full score, Schonenberger also engraved and printed the orchestral parts. Previously, the publishing house had printed the piano vocal score of several selected numbers from La fille du régiment, as well as the complete score reduction of the work. The Schonenberger edition constitutes, however, a problematical source. The engravers had to work under great pressure - the score was assembled in less than a month -, and the final product turned out to be of mediocre quality, abounding in imperfections, errors, and inconsistencies affecting both the literary and the musical texts. This critical edition has therefore been realized, first of all, through a careful reconstruction process: the text handed down by tradition was compared with a number of sources (including the manuscript scores of the Italian version) that have enabled the editor to address the multiple problems posed by the principal source. The spoken dialogues, missing in the printed music sources, are derived from the libretto used for the première. The critical edition of La fille du régiment reinstates Tonio?s romance «Pour me rapprocher de Marie» from Act Two, included in the original libretto and actually sung at the première, but expunged from the Schonenberger edition of the score. Donizetti himself cut the romance soon after the première, possibly because of the tenor?s poor performance - as a result, the omission became customary. The appendices to this critical edition present, additionally, two unpublished variants, handed down in form of complete and autograph score: these pieces, crossed out or modified through the compositional process, add fresh new possibilities to current performance practices. The first one is a duet for Marie and Tonio that Donizetti had originally devised for Act Two, but later deleted from the score. The second one is a preliminary draft of the Act Two Finale, later expunged and replaced, in both music and literary text, by the final version.

Based on the Critical Edition- Orchestra material on hire. Par MAHLER GUSTAV. The large-scale form of 'Symphony No. 9' is unusual in a number of ways. It reminds in no way of the ninth symphonies of famous predecessors. Two slow movements, an Andante comodo at the beginning and an Adagio at the end, form the frame for two of the most parodistic and embittered inner movements that Mahler ever wrote - a ländler-waltz combination, and the 'Rondo-Burleske', a bitter, ironic movement that is derisively dedicated 'to my brothers in Apollo'. The most extraordinary part of Mahler's last completed symphony must certainly be the slow finale - a 20-minute long intensively singing movement laden with conflict that includes references to earlier works by Mahler, in slow motion as it were ('Urlicht',' Ablösung im Sommer', the 'Scherzo of Symphony No. 3', 'Der Abschied' from 'Das Lied von der Erde', and 'Oft denk' ich, sie sind nur ausgegangen' from the 'Kindertotenlieder'); it indeed seems that a circle is being closed. (Reinhold Kubik) Universal Edition continues its new study score standard. These completely redesigned scores offer an unparalleled insight into the music of the last hundred years. Great care has been taken to select the best available content for this journey through music history, and every score has been edited according to the latest quality standards./ Répertoire / Orchestre

Par SORENSEN BENT . When it comes to titles, almost all the works I have composed have found their title before or at the same moment I started them. That is why it was also surprising - not to say transgressive - for me that my work for 9 instruments for Ensemble MidtVest was completely untitled until the last bar. Then it dawned on me that the titlelessness was a natural result of the music's volatility. It was - and is - as if the music was constantly escaping from itself. The beginning of the work is definitely an escape into a new chapter, and that feeling runs through the entire work. In a longer section, the music flies towards a Barcarole, where the piano has a soloist role, and this is probably a result of my recurring dream of Venice - the gondolas in the swaying rhythms of the canals. Hence the Italian title, 'Fuggitivo' - fugitive. The work was composed for and commissioned by Ensemble MidtVest with support from the Danish Arts Foundation. / Date parution : 2023-10-31/ Répertoire / Orchestre

Par CASABLANCAS BENET. Shade and Darkness, lasting some 12:30 minutes, was co-commissioned by the Centro Nacional de Difusión Musical and the Festival Internacional de Música y Danza de Granada. The work is inspired by Turner's famous painting of the same name, subtitled 'The Night Before the Flood', although this does not imply any programmatic or even less descriptive intention, beyond the composer's admiration for the painter, and for the richness of tones and chiaroscuro, subtlety in the treatment of pictorial matter, and the dynamism and emotional force present in his work, to whose depth John Ruskin alludes: 'Nuance is in Turner, first of all, a beautiful aid to the great impression to be conveyed, but it is neither the source nor the essence of that impression; it is little more than a visible melody... preparing the feelings for the reading of the mysteries of God.' The score, generous in expressive contrasts, explores the ductility and richness of possibilities of the strings, with a very diversified use of textures, densities and colours. The formal arrangement describes a wide ternary arc, consisting of two slow and often static sections - not without ominous foreboding - and a more lively central part, punctuated by occasional turbulence and dazzling flashes of timbre, culminating in a powerful climactic process. In the final bars the four voices of the classical quartet fleetingly emerge, as a tribute to Günter Pichler, founder and member of the Alban Berg Quartet, to whom the score is dedicated, and who conducted the premiere of the work in front of the Joven Orquesta Nacional de España on 24 and 25 June 2014 at the Auditorio Nacional de Música in Madrid and in the Patio de los Mármoles del Hospital Real in Granada. / Date parution : 2022-03-15/ Répertoire / Petit Orchestre

(+)
E-moll Op. 64-Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto op. 64 is a key work of the 19th century adhering to the classical style of Beethoven while pointing the way to the romantic ethos of Brahms. It has long been known that Mendelssohn performed the work with three soloists in succession: Ferdinand David who worked closely with the composer during its composition and played it at the première; the ‘child prodigy’ Joseph Joachim; and Hubert Léonard a young Belgian virtuoso about whom little is known. As proof sheets for the Violin Concerto in E minor were long considered lost it could be described as somewhat of a sensation when proofs for the soloviolin part resurfaced together with a letter from Mendelssohn to Léonard. The letter informs us that the composer invited Léonard to his home in Frankfurt in order to make his acquaintance. It was already known that Mendelssohn had given proof sheets to David; now we know that he also gave some to Léonard. The recently discovered proofs reveal how Léonard played the concerto with Mendelssohn on that memorable evening in February 1845. Besides containing bowing marks and fingering they also show how Léonard executed shifts of position and where he employed open strings. Furthermore modifications made to dynamic markings and additional legato bowing are shown. It is safe to assume that all of this was done with Mendelssohn’s approval. That the young violinist made a positive impression on the composer is confirmed in the latter’s correspondence following their joint performance. Mendelssohn is full of praise for Léonard’s playing and offers to lend his support in finding employment in Germany. This revised edition of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto (only the orchestral parts remain unchanged) includes a separate booklet on performance practice. The editor Clive Brown is an acknowledged expert on Romantic performance practice.- New source situation owing to recently rediscovered proofs- Revised Urtext edition- With a separate booklet on performance practice (BA9060) (Eng/Ger)- Full score in the revised early and late (popular) versions (BA9099)

“Eine kleine Nachtmusik” “... written with ease, but skillfully refined” “Eine kleine NachtMusick” is how Mozart entered the Serenade in G major in his personal catalogue of works on 10 August 1787. It was written without any known incentive or commission during the time that Mozart was composing “Don Giovanni”, a time when he was celebrating his greatest success as an opera composer. The work is one of the jewels of Mozart’s output, combining bright radiance and a natural simplicity with brilliant refinement. Similarly, the autograph manuscript of this perfect masterpiece is captivating because of its balanced clarity and beautiful handwriting. The manuscript was inaccessible to the public for almost half a century, but now Bärenreiter has received exclusive permission to produce a new facsimile of Mozart’s original. The edition reproduces the facsimile pages as individual sheets and leaves, reflecting the way the original copy has survived. These pages – in high-quality colour printing, each trimmed individually – are presented in a handsome box. This is accompanied by a booklet with an introductory text by Wolfgang Rehm including information on the genesis of the composition and the various aspects of the autograph manuscript. “The fact that it’s all over town does not alter anything in the quality of this occasional piece written with ease but skillfully refined.” (Wolfgang Hildesheimer) BÄRENREITER FACSIMILE The seal is used exclusively for facsimile editions published by Bärenreiter which meet the highest demands in both scholarly and technical terms.

This study score is based on the score and complete performance material of Dvorák?s famous Cello Concerto In B Minor (BA 9045) edited by Jonathan Del Mar and published in 2011. In addition the study score contains a Foreword by Dvorák scholar Jan Smaczny.Like every other major 19th-century Cello concerto Dvorák?s concerto resulted from a collaboration between the composer and a virtuoso musician. Several passages in Dvorák?s autograph were written by the cellist Hanus Wihan but Bärenreiter?s edition now reveals that some details in the orchestral parts are also in his writing showing just how closely the twomusicians were working together. The editor Jonathan Del Mar has conscientiously examined every available source including two that have hitherto been either ignored or crucially undervalued. His research has led to a benchmark edition that reconstructs for the first time since its initial publication in 1896 Dvorák?s definitive version of the solo part. It differs from previous editions in practically every bar and hundreds of corrections have also been made to the orchestral parts.Includes Dvorák?s final and definitive version of the solo Cello part.Incorporates new discoveries regarding the collaboration between Dvorák and Wihan. With Feuermann?s and Casals?s alternative versions of a passage in the first movement.Detailed Foreword (Eng/Cz/Ger)

The present full score showsa suggested instrumentation which was devised by Colin Currie in conjunction with the composer. Soloists should attempt to match the timbres used but should not feel constrained by the exact choice ofinstruments.COMPOSER’S NOTEThe percussion instruments used in a table of noises in some ways represent the odd things that were on my great uncle Ash’s parlour table that fascinated me as a child. There is even abottle; there was always a milk bottle with the silver top pushed in surrounded by other essentials for his life. From birth he was quite severely handicapped in one of his legs and couldn’t walk too far without his trusty crutch. He kept everything he needed within arm’s length. In the list of instruments for the solo part there’s everything from deep log drum sounds to very high metallic chime sounds. Wood glass metal and a whistle. Mostlysmall-scale things with a large gong behind used sparingly. I think that we managed to keep below 30 instruments in all which I was keen to do. I didn’t want scores of things that are only played once they have to earn theirkeep. I didn’t want to use a marimba but thought that trying to make the xylophone sound in a more expressive way would be more of a challenge. The percussionist sits for much of the time on a Cajon a flamenco instrument which isessentially a wooden box. The player hits the front of the box in various ways rather as you play a conga. There are guitar strings inside and bells to add to the overall colour. I would like to thank Colin Currie for the

Symphony in Eb major Hob. I:103 (Drumroll)-The twelve London Symphonies??? comprise the sublime final statement of Haydn???s symphonic ??uvre. They were written for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon and Haydn himself conducted their premieres during his lengthy stays in the English metropolis in 1791/92 and 1794/95. The E-flat-major Symphony no. 103 was composed in 1795 as the penultimate of the London Symphonies. It owes its epithet to its unique beginning: a solo drumroll in the timpani ushers in the slow introduction. This opening bar marked with Haydn???s heading Intrada??? and a pause even inspires many a performer to venture a short timpani improvisation. This study edition adopts the musical text of the HaydnComplete Edition thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. An informative preface and a brief Critical Report make the handy score an ideal companion for all current and soon-to-be Haydn fans.

The twelve ?London Symphonies? comprise the sublime final statement of Haydn?s symphonic ?uvre. They were written for the London impresario Johann Peter Salomon and Haydn himself conducted their premieres during his lengthy stays in the English metropolis in 1791/92 and 1794/95. Hailing from 1791 the Symphony in D major no. 96 numbers among the first symphonies written in and for London. The epithet given to it by posterity ?The Miracle? was bestowed erroneously for the miracle ? that no one was injured when a chandelier fell during a concert ? took place during a performance of a different Haydn symphony. And yet it is a miracle of musical esprit nonetheless from the subtlerelations between the motives consisting of broken triads that open all four movements to the virtuosic shifts in mood owing to surprising harmonies Haydn here submits a prime example of how he develops musical ideas. This study edition adopts the musical text of the Haydn Complete Edition thereby guaranteeing the highest scholarly quality. An informative preface and a brief Critical Report make the handy score an ideal companion for all current and soon-to-be Haydn fans. J.S. Bach?s four Orchestral Suites belong to that select group of works one could truly call classical hits! They stem from Bach?s extremely productive time in Cöthen which ended in 1721.Unfortunately the only sources that have come down to us are copyist parts from Leipzig. These originally formed the basis for the critical complete edition volume which was published in 1967 as part of the ?New Bach Edition?.At that time Bärenreiter also issued separate scores and parts which however were prepared with additional articulation and performance suggestions. Bärenreiter?s new edition of Bach?s great four suites now presents the Urtext as found in the ?New BachEdition? i.e. without emendations and performance suggestions. The orchestral parts have been re-engraved and the material includes an alternative version of the Overture and Air to the D major suite BWV 1068 including a ?Violino concertato? part.Urtext editions of these important works.Newly engraved parts and fully realized continuo. For the first time an alternative version of the Overture and Air to the D major suite BWV 1068 with ? Violino concertato ? is included.Full scores study scores & performance material available for sale
