Symphonie der Tausend-Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 8 is a work of exceptions. Seen from the outside this is true of the forces that are used: with its three choirs eight soloists and an orchestra of far more than one hundred musicians there are few similar works in the annals of music. This cast of performers determines the second exceptional element of the work the mix of instrumental and vocal characteristics that makes it to the prototype of a 'vocal symphony' which - as Mahler put it - 'is sung from beginning to end'. In turn the texts that are sung influence the structure of the whole replacing as it were the usual four movements of a symphony with twostrongly divergent 'parts'. And finally as if to emphasize this divergence the texts used - the hymn Veni creator spiritus in the first part and the final scene of Goethe's Faust in the second - are not only written in two languages but also separated in their origins by more than one thousand years. Thus it is a work of extremes and a work of contradiction. It seems however that it was exactly these distinctive features that lifted the symphony above the others and convinced Mahler that his Symphony No. 8 was 'the greatest' work 'that I have composed'. It is an understandable coincidence that he thus raised Symphony No. 8 to the same rank within his oeuvre as Goethe who claimed that the drama was his 'Hauptgeschäft' [main work] did with Faust. Considered one of Bach's finest students many compositions of Krebs have been erroneously attributed to Bach. Krebs composed two concertos for lute and orchestra including this Concerto in F Major in three movements: Allegro Larghetto and Allegro assai. This edition includes the full orchestral score orchestral parts as well as guitar and lute parts. Victor Van Puijenbroeck has adapted the original solo part and included in the set are parts for both lute (the part has been adapted from lute tablature to modern notation) andguitar (capotasto). Procession II for small Orchestra was composed by Anders Brødsgaard in 1986. Programme note: The title Procession refers to the process going on throughout the piece where a two-part 'formula' (played by two groups of instruments) gradually 'turn inside out' as the short ornamental grace notes becomes long and vice versa. The title also suggests the ritual in the experience of the imperceptible changes in the 25 transformations the possibility of ignoring the 13 'events' that regularly interrupt the progressive procession. Malcolm Arnold's one act ballet score Homage To The Queen was commissioned in 1953 by the Royal Opera House Covent Garden to celebrate the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The ballet was conceived and choreographed by Frederick Ashton with designs by Oliver Messel and was danced by the full company of the Sadler's Wells Ballet with an illustrious cast that comprised Nadia Nerina as Queen of the Earth Violetta Elvin as Queen of the Waters Beryl Grey as Queen of Fire and Margot Fonteyn as Queen of the Air. The conductor of the ROH orchestra was Robert Irving. Homage to the Queen was first performed on the night of the coronation 2June1953.One of the towering musical figures of the 20th century Sir Malcolm Arnold has a remarkable catalogue of major concert works to his credit including nine symphonies seven ballets two operas one musical over twenty concertos two string quartets and music for brass band and wind band. He has also written over 132 film scores and among these are some of the finest works ever composed for the medium: Bridge On The River Kwai Inn Of The Sixth Happiness Hobson's Choice Whistle Down The Wind and David Copperfield.

La fille du régiment, always one of Donizetti?s most popular stage works, was first performed at the Théâtre de l?Opéra-Comique in Paris on 11 February 1840. It was composed by Donizetti, to a libretto by Saint-Georges and Bayard, in 1839, for the French debut of soprano Juliette Bourgeois. Later on, Donizetti prepared an Italian version as well, using a libretto adaptation by Calisto Bassi, and making several alterations to the French version of the score (the premiere of the new version, entitled La figlia del reggimento, took place at La Scala Theatre in Milano on 3 October 1840). The opera enjoyed tremendous success ? at the Opéra-Comique alone, more than one thousand performances were given between 1840 and 1917 ?, and was widely staged in the major European and American opera houses. Owing to the lack of available autograph music sources ? only a few score sketches and fragments survive, kept at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France ?, the principal source for this edition is the printed score prepared by the Parisian publisher Georges Schonenberger during the spring of 1840. Together with the full score, Schonenberger also engraved and printed the orchestral parts. Previously, the publishing house had printed the piano vocal score of several selected numbers from La fille du régiment, as well as the complete score reduction of the work. The Schonenberger edition constitutes, however, a problematical source. The engravers had to work under great pressure - the score was assembled in less than a month -, and the final product turned out to be of mediocre quality, abounding in imperfections, errors, and inconsistencies affecting both the literary and the musical texts. This critical edition has therefore been realized, first of all, through a careful reconstruction process: the text handed down by tradition was compared with a number of sources (including the manuscript scores of the Italian version) that have enabled the editor to address the multiple problems posed by the principal source. The spoken dialogues, missing in the printed music sources, are derived from the libretto used for the première. The critical edition of La fille du régiment reinstates Tonio?s romance «Pour me rapprocher de Marie» from Act Two, included in the original libretto and actually sung at the première, but expunged from the Schonenberger edition of the score. Donizetti himself cut the romance soon after the première, possibly because of the tenor?s poor performance - as a result, the omission became customary. The appendices to this critical edition present, additionally, two unpublished variants, handed down in form of complete and autograph score: these pieces, crossed out or modified through the compositional process, add fresh new possibilities to current performance practices. The first one is a duet for Marie and Tonio that Donizetti had originally devised for Act Two, but later deleted from the score. The second one is a preliminary draft of the Act Two Finale, later expunged and replaced, in both music and literary text, by the final version.

Concert Overture-The Hebrides Op.26   Concert Overture   The Hebrides the third in Bärenreiter’s series of critical editions of Mendelssohn’s great overtures is one of Mendelssohn Bartholdy’s most performed compositions.  Previously this work was only available in one composite version: the Julius Rietz edition from the 1860s.   The new Bärenreiter edition consist of two versions each containing additional material from further sources.   Version one the “Rome” version exists itself in two versions and has never beenpublished in a performing edition.  Version two the “London” version also exists in two versions one of which was published by Mendelssohn in 1835.   This pioneering edition documents the development of the composition and the various changes made by Mendelssohn.  The new edition offers orchestras for the first time the possibility to perform this famous work based on all known sources.
