The timeless and year-round versatility of the Latin text Dona Nobis Pacem is set seamlessly with an English verse singing of understanding, kindness and hope for humankind. The flowing piano accompaniment lies beneath the 2-part and 3-part mixed voicings designing a simple, yet musically rich choral for young and developing voices.

Dona nobis pacem and Lux aeterna were both written for concert programs devoted to specific themes. They share the use of the techniques of minimalism in their organ parts, enabling the broad vocal lines in the choral voices to stretch out above this instrument, thus imparting a special aspect to the concerns addressed by the texts: the longing for freedom in the here and now, as expressed in the Dona nobis pacem, as well as the desire for peace and tranquillity in the Lux aeterna. Score available separately - see item CA.751600.

Combining the traditional Dona nobis pacem with a new text and melody by Chris de Silva, this piece—written as a closing blessing for an evening prayer service at the Los Angeles Religious Education Congress—is ideal for retreats, contemplative prayer, reconciliation services, Liturgy of the Hours, and the Rite of Sending. It includes the word “peace†in 18 languages. (Don’t worry, there’s a pronunciation guide included!).

This piece is an adaptation of the instrumental movement Reflection in Kim André ArnesenÂ’s large-scale work The Stranger. Arnesen was inspired by research showing the emotional effect of having eye contact with a stranger for only a few minutes. Studies have shown that this can develop deeper trust and empathy for each other. The idea was to have the audience facing each other to make eyecontact during the performance. With that being essential for peace among people, Arnesen used the texts “Dona nobis pacem†(“Grant us peaceâ€) and “Miserere nobis†(“Have mercy on usâ€) for this version for choir. An optional piano part is supplied which not only supports the choral harmonies, but provides underlying momentum, though a slightly slower tempo is suggested if the piano accompaniment is used.
