Composed in 1922 the Deux Mouvements - MCMXXII is a piece for two Flutes or Flute and Oboe Clarinet and Bassoon by Jacques Ibert. Dedicated to the “Modern Society of Wind instruments” this quartet is difficult and is composed of two movements: “Allant” and “Assez vif et rythmé”. This really lyrical quartet work is a great piece to play for a concert. Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) also composed many symphonic suites operas and seven orchestras including 'Angelique' (1926) and 'Divertissement' (1930). He also was in charge of the Accadémie deFrance in the Villa Médicis (Roma) and was later administrator for the Paris Opera.

Unusually for him Davies starts his Bassoon Concerto not with slow music but with speed and brilliance: the opening is a Presto initiated by the strings and only at the entry of the soloist does the tempo relax to thatof a real introduction. Out of this grow a big dancing Allegro. The slow movement begins and ends with a simple song around fantastical ornamentation from the soloist. The finale is again a recitative and dance with a slow coda.The whole work is an immense show of stamina poetry and athleticism for the bassoon set against an orchestra coloured by low wind (alto flute clarinet in A bass clarinet contrabassoon horns).Bassoon part with pianoreduction of the orchestral score.

Having won many prizes at the Paris Conservatoire during the 1920s-1930s Eugène Bozza went on to conduct the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and to become Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes. As a major figure on the classical music frontline Bozza's compositions were well-received by audiences Récit Sicilienne and Rondo for Bassoon and Piano being no exception. This Bozza piece for Bassoon is expressive and virtuosic displaying the entire range of the instrument accompanied by rhythmic quavers and spread chords in the Piano. By popular request the piece has been given a separate piano part and has since been proved equally entertaining for trombone bassoon or cello!
