The Italian title is reminiscent of simple 'light' music but the pieces’ melodic ingenuity and colourful writing for Winds show it to be chamber music of the highest quality.

Composed in 1922 the Deux Mouvements - MCMXXII is a piece for two Flutes or Flute and Oboe Clarinet and Bassoon by Jacques Ibert. Dedicated to the “Modern Society of Wind instruments” this quartet is difficult and is composed of two movements: “Allant” and “Assez vif et rythmé”. This really lyrical quartet work is a great piece to play for a concert. Jacques Ibert (1890-1962) also composed many symphonic suites operas and seven orchestras including 'Angelique' (1926) and 'Divertissement' (1930). He also was in charge of the Accadémie deFrance in the Villa Médicis (Roma) and was later administrator for the Paris Opera.

To this day Eugène Bozza (1905-1991) remains one of the most prolific composers for wind instruments despite being a violinist himself. His Duettino for Two Bassoons is no exception to the composer's success. During his studies at the Paris Conservatoire Bozza won prizes for Violin conducting and composition as well as the Grand Prix de Rome. He then conducted the orchestra of the Opéra-Comique and became Head of the Conservatoire in Valenciennes whilst remaining a prominent composer. Composed in 1954 Bozza's Duettino for Two Bassoons is a virtuosic work addressing advanced features including complex rhythms chromaticism a wide range and articulation. As music educationalist Paul Griffiths has written of Bozza's compositions 'his works reveal melodic fluency elegance of structure and a consistently sensitive concern of instrumental capabilities.'

Dans cette pièce, Franco Cesarini a voulu utiliser quelques danses typiques de la tradition populaire grecque. Il a sélectionné trois chansons folkloriques traditionnelles, les adaptant librement. Le premier mouvement est un kalamatianos, une danse festive qui a des racines remontant à l'antiquité, dans les premiers écrits d'Homère. Elle est considérée comme la danse nationale grecque. Sa caractéristique la plus distinctive est le rythme irrégulier en 7/8. Selon l'occasion et l'habileté des danseurs, certains pas peuvent être exécutés en sautant et en s'accroupissant. Le deuxième mouvement représente un zeibekiko. Contrairement à la plupart des danses traditionnelles grecques, le zeibekiko n'est pas une danse exécutée en groupe ; il n'y a pas d'étapes particulières à suivre, seulement certaines figures. Le troisième mouvement, un hasapiko, est une danse traditionnelle avec des racines à Constantinople. Le hasapiko, qui a inspiré le sirtaki, est une danse qui passe d'un rythme lent à un rythme plus rapide. Timeless Cornish Melodies Cooked Up For Hungry Brass Players-As I sit myself down to write this brief foreword I ask myself can there be music more stirring than these old Cornish folk melodies? Though not Cornish myself (I confess to being born a little further up the road in Bristol) I feel I have spent sufficient time in these 'ere parts to resonate with the sturdy brass band tradition that continues to permeate this incomparably beautiful rugged county. One can almost detect a French 'accent' when listening to the piano music of Debussy and likewise speaking as a lapsed brass player there is undoubtedly something of the Cornish twang about Trelawny when played on a cornet or euphonium. Then again one gets a different yet entirely convincing effect upon hearing these melodies rendered on woodwind instruments; hence with a little gamesmanship on my part I am pleased to see my collection of these fifteen delectable ditties come to fruition in the form of arrangements for treble clef brass instruments (in B flat and E flat) trombone and tuba (bass clef) horn in F flute clarinet and bassoon.While many will find themselves humming the likes of Going up Camborne Hill Lamorna or The Helston Furry Dance even before they have turned to the first page - for these are indelibly intertwined with Cornish culture - I wonder if I might draw your attention to The Cornish Squire The Pool of Pilate and Cold Blows the Wind Today Sweetheart which are quite simply sublime melodies perhaps needing that extra bit of help in bringing them to mind nowadays. In the best tradition of musical hand-me-downs Cornish folk music works equally ideally sung and played and only by doing so on a regular basis can such traditions hope to continue forward with vigour and authority. A legitimate way of achieving this is to revitalise the harmonic scheme of these ancient tunes and bring them up to date for a modern audience; after all it was such an approach that fuelled the imagination of Benjamin Britten and Ralph Vaughan Williams in decades past while skilfully paying homage to the
