Max Bruch succeeded in composing an impressive setting of the well known Advent text, O Heiland, reiss die Himmel auf (O Saviour, tear open the heavens). Compositionally it is extremely sophisticated in its construction; Bruch combines both the choir and orchestra in a powerfully expressive and moving portrayal of mankind waiting for the coming of the Saviour. Following the premiere of the work in 1869 it was celebrated as Bruch's most important choral work, but later it fell largely into oblivion. Almost 150 years after it was composed, for the first time a critical-scholarly edition is now available to the public. Score and part available separately - see item CA.1036400.

Franz Schubert's Mass in A-flat major: A work that time and again occupied the composer anew, with which he, in his words, strived towards the highest in art - and perhaps only wished to receive a court appointment in Vienna. His efforts to present a new, individual mass led, at any rate, to unconventional solutions (and an unusual key), a renunciation of plain acclamation, a reduction of pathos in favor of an exceptionally elaborate composition, particularly the first part - a brilliant missa solemnis for the ceremonious organization of the court church service and, at the same time, the public presentation of an ambitious composer's artistic competence. Score and part available separately - see item CA.4065900.

Christmas Spiritual Jack Schrader has given this favorite Christmas spiritual a relaxed, big-band, 'swing style' setting. Arranged for SSATB voices with piano or orchestra, this fresh setting is sure to fill the season with joy and good will. Jack's printed notes ask the singers to embrace the text that describes the mission of those first shepherd-followers and you, too, will be led to the Savior of Bethlehem. Ideal for both adult or youth choirs in either church or school. The full orchestration by Don Hart consists of parts for: Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horns 1 & 2, Trumpets 1, 2 & 3 (or Tuba), Percussion 1 & 2, Harp, Rhythm, Violins 1 & 2, Viola Cello and Bass.

Rheinberger began work on his second Symphony during his visit to Italy with his wife in 1874. He was commissioned to write it by an orchestral society in Florence - an indication that his reputation had already spread throughout Europe. The autograph score contains a poem by his wife Fanny, which in four sections expressed the moods of impressions of the visit which seem to underlie the symphony. Contemporaries praised particularly the beauty of the Adagio. The work is here presented for the first time in an edition based critically on the sources. Score and part available separately - see item CA.5008700.

This is a beautiful and rewarding composition by a former member of the famous St. Thomas Boys Choir in Leipzig and later Dresden Kreuzkantor. Inspite of the relatively easy level of difficulty, its effect will not fail to impress. This three-movement Christmas cantata for mixed choir and orchestra makes it possible to perform the piece both in worship services and in concert. Score and part available separately - see item CA.1002000.

In 1812 Schubert probably composed one of his earliest settings of the Mass, although only this Kyrie for a Mass in D minor was written down. A fragment of a Credo from 1811 has also survived. Score and part available separately - see item CA.7004000.

For the magnificent opening of the oratorio season at the beginning of 1736 Handel presented a composition which, like hardly any of his other oratorios, gave him the opportunity to display his musical artistry: John Dryden's ode Alexander's Feast or the Power of Music, published in 1696, demonstrates the power of music by the example of the ancient hero, Alexander the Great. From the impressive lament on the death of Darius, the King of Persia, to the boisterous Praise of Bacchus Handel avails himself of the entire breadth of the musical representation of the emotions and the possibilities for expression. In the text by Newburg Hamilton added at the end of work St. Cecilia elevates the events of the ancient heathen story, which Handel expressed in plastic, skillful polyphony. Later, this homage to the patron saint of church music, Handel also present the opportunity to perform the work on St. Cecilia's Day (22 November). For the first time the present new edition is based consistently on Handel's conducting score, which he used for his own performances of the oratorio, thus not only eliminating timeworn errors, but also offering clarity concerning the choruses, the arias and recitatives, actually performed in Handel's concerts, as well as their sequence of performance. The new Carus edition offers two performance versions: the version of the premiere in 1736, as well as a revised version from 1751. Furthermore, the inclusion of the Concerto for Harp HWV 294 (CV 55.294) is also possible; Handel composed this work especially for Alexander's Feast (as an illustration of Timotheus, the ancient poet who played the lyre). For this purpose the edition contains the appropriate alternatives for the sequence of the movements. Score and parts available separately - see item CA.5507500.

In the musical-historical context Anton Diabelli is among a transitional group of Biedermeier composers who cannot be classed as either classical or romantic. Diabelli's intention was to publish this Mass in accordance with the tradition of his teacher Michael Haydn as a Country Mass, although its technical demands and also its length far exceeded those customary in a Country Mass and Missa brevis. The extant sources offer scope for performance in various different versions as regards the instrumentation used, all these versions having the right to be considered authentic. Score and part available separately - see item CA.2300700.

With a duration of about 10 minutes, Schubert's Magnificat D 486 in C major is one of the more concise settings of the well-known Marian canticles, originally for the service of Vespers. It was composed in late summer 1815, and is therefore probably one of a series of church music works Schubert wrote in his youth for Lichtenthal Parish Church. The work requires a large-scale orchestra with strings, woodwind, and brass. The four-part choir contrasts with four soloists; this quartet sings the peaceful middle section of the three-section work. For the Carus edition Schubert's own autograph manuscript of his Magnificat was consulted again for the first time since 1888. Until 1989 this had been thought to be lost. This work is now available in carus music, the choir app! Score and part available separately - see item CA.7005300.

Elijah is regarded as a milestone in Mendelssohn's compositional output and as a high point in the oratorio literature of the 19th century. Mendelssohn composed his second great oratorio just a year before his premature death. This excitingly dramatic work also expresses a fervent belief in God, a belief which in the 19th century was no longer self-evident. Mendelssohn transposed the visible world of the Old Testament into numerous musical expressive possibilities in which Old Testament texts, including psalm texts and commentaries from the words of the Prophets, were shaped into biblical dramas. For a subject like Elijah ... the drama must reign supreme ... the characters must be introduced speaking and acting like living people ... a quite vivid world of the sort we find in every chapter of the Old Testament. Mendelssohn to his librettist. Score available separately - see item CA.4013000.

It's about 200 years since Beethoven scribbled down a theme in D minor in his sketch book, which he later used, slightly altered, in the 2nd movement of his 9th Symphony. Beethoven had thought of setting Schiller's Ode to Joy much earlier. As early as 1803 Ferdinand Ries mentioned a complete setting of the text by Beethoven which no longer survives. The vocal score of the finale of the 9th Symphony is based on the vocal score made by Carl Reinecke around the end of the 19th century. The version by Reinecke, popular worldwide, closely reflects the sound of the orchestral writing, yet at the same time is remains playable. Stefan Schuck has revised this historic vocal score, in the process taking into account recent research findings. The new Carus vocal score contains rehearsal letters from all current versions of the orchestral material, and is thus compatible with all available music editions. In the presentation of this edition, particular attention has been paid to the practical needs of (choral) singers and repetiteurs.
