A flashback is an interesting psychological phenomenon: a seemingly random trigger can bring back long-forgotten memories from the subconscious mind. The composer underwent a similar experience before writing this piece. He was asked to write a piece for The National Youth Fanfare Band in the Netherlands, one which he heard perform many years ago. All of a sudden he remembered Deep Harmony, a piece frequently programmed back then. He used his own flashback-experience as an inspiration to weave an old English hymn into his new composition, much like a musical flashback. The right idea at the right moment, as this piece will prove!Een flashback is een psychologisch fenomeen: een hedendaagse belevenis roept zomaar uit het niets herinneringen uit het verleden op. Zo verging het ook Jan de Haan, toen hij een muziekstuk voor het Nationaal Jeugd Fanfare Orkest inopdracht kreeg. Het is het orkest waarin hij zelf ooit speelde. Plotseling viel hem het werk Deep Harmony in, een werk dat hij destijds vaak had gespeeld. Zijn flashback op dit Engelse kerklied nam hij als inspiratiebronen hij verwerkte het in dit nieuwe muziekstuk. Plötzlich fiel ihm ein damals oft programmiertes Stück namens Deep Harmony ein und er nahm diesen Flashback als Inspiration, dieses englische Kirchenlied in seinem neuen Werk zu verarbeiten. Der richtige Einfall im richtigen Moment, wie das Resultat beweist!Le flash-back est un phénomène psychologique. Des événements du passé, imprimés dans la mémoire long terme, resurgissent comme une réponse inconsciente et soudaine un stimulus lié une expérience antérieure.Cette œuvre a été composée l’occasion du cinquantième anniversaire de l’Orchestre de Fanfare National des Jeunes des Pays-Bas, une formation talentueuse, dont Jan de Haan fut lui-même membre, au cours des années 1960. Jeune musicien, il éprouvait un profond respect pour le chef d’alors, Piebe Bakker (1929-2002), un homme passionné, avec un style de direction très stimulant. En revenant sur cette période, quarante ans après, Jan de Haan a revécu lesnombreuses interprétations de la pièce Deep Harmony. La mélodie scintillante - extraite d’un cantique anglais - lui est alors apparue comme un flash-back et c’est comme un éclair mental qu’il a choisi de lui redonner vie dans le passage final de cette œuvre.

Evolution was commissioned by Kunstfactor for the 4th section of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) 2011. It is dedicated to Jappie Dijkstra and the Music Information Centre (MUI), Arnhem, Holland, in acknowledgement of their outstanding work in developing brass band repertoire. The composer writes:-The idea for the piece came when I was reading an article about a branch of Chinese philosophy which is abbreviated as Wu Xing, which has no exact translation but can mean, for example, five elements, five phases or five states of change. It is central to all elements of Chinese thought, including science, philosophy, medicine and astrology, and in simpleterms tries to create various cyclic relationships between five elements in all walks of life. An example is: Earth - Metal - Water - Wood - Fire - (Earth) etc. where (in one cycle) earth bears metal, metal changes to liquid (water) when heated, water helps trees grow, wood burns to create fire, fire produces ash (earth) and the cycle continues.I was particularly interested in the cycle of emotions: Meditation - Sorrow - Fear - Anger - Joy - (Meditation) etc. and thought this cyclic principle would provide an effective emotional journey for a piece of music. So Evolution has five equal sections which loosely characterise this emotional cycle. I have tried to make the music grow organically, with minimal repetition, and each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one, with the opening material appearing, transformed, at the end of the piece to complete the cycle. Evolution is geschreven in opdracht van Kunstfactor voor de 4e divisie van de NBK (Nederlandse Brassband Kampioenschappen) 2011. Het werk is opgedragen aan Jappie Dijkstra en het MUI (Muziekuitleen- en Informatiecentrum) te Arnhem, als waardering voor hun inspanningen met betrekking tot de ontwikkeling van het brassbandrepertoire.De componist schrijft:Het idee voor Evolution kwam in mij op toen ik een artikel las over een tak binnen de Chinese filosofie waarvan de naam wordt afgekort tot Wu Xing - waar geen exacte vertaling voor is, maar wat zoveel betekent als vijf elementen, vijf fasen of vijf stadia van verandering. Het gaat om een wezenlijk onderdeel van allecomponenten binnen het Chinese gedachtegoed, inclusief de wetenschap, filosofie, geneeskunst en astrologie. Simpel gezegd draait het om het creëren van diverse cyclische verbanden tussen vijf elementen die in ieders leven een rol spelen. Een voorbeeld: Aarde - Metaal - Water - Hout - Vuur - (Aarde) enz. In deze cyclus bevat aarde metaal; metaal verandert in vloeistof (water) door verhitting; water helpt bomen te groeien; hout dat brandt creëert vuur; en vuur produceert as (aarde). Zo blijft de cyclus voortgaan. Zelf was ik vooral ge nteresseerd in de cyclus van emoties: Meditatie - Verdriet - Angst - Boosheid - Vreugde - (Meditatie) enz. De gedachte aan dit cyclische principe leverde een reis door een muzikale wereld van emoties op. Evolution bestaat uit vijf delen die betrekking hebben op de emotionele cyclus. Ik heb geprobeerd de muziek op natuurlijke wijze te laten ontstaan, met zo weinig mogelijk herhalingen. Elk deel vloeit voort uit de muzikale elementen uit het slot van het voorgaande deel. Het openingsmateriaal komt, in getransformeerde gedaante, terug aan het einde van het werk, waarmee de cyclus wordt afgerond. Evolution wurde von Kunstfactor für die vierte Abteilung der Holländischen Nationalen Brass-Band-Meisterschaft (NBK) 2011 in Auftrag gegeben. Folglich besteht Evolution aus fünf gleichen Abschnitten, die diesen Kreislauf der Gefühle grob nachzeichnen. Ich habe versucht, die Musik organisch wachsen zu lassen mit möglichst wenig Wiederholungen. Jeder Satz entwickelt sich aus den Elementen vom Ende des vorhergehenden Satzes und das Material der Eröffnung vollendet am Schluss des Werkes den Kreis. Evolution se compose donc de cinq parties égales qui reflètent assez librement ce cycle des émotions. J’ai essayé de faire en sorte que la musique se développe de manière fluide et naturelle, avec un minimum de répétitions. Chaque mouvement s’ouvre partir des éléments musicaux qui parachèvent le mouvement précédent, tandis que le motif premier réapparaît.

Since most of the bands competing in the 4th Section of the Dutch National Championships have many young players, this piece is stylistically youthful— especially in the opening and closing sections. An arpeggio pattern appears numerous times in all registers and is the basic musical element of the main melody, alternating with a second theme that has a slightly different melodic character. The middle section is conceived like a chorale, introduced and developed stepwise: firstly with short patterns and gradually in increasingly long snippets, until it’s played in its glorious entirety at measure 216. No real solo passages are included but rather small chambercombinations, thus offering the opportunity to various players to display their technical and performance skills. The finale recaptures musical material from the first section of the piece and provides a majestic conclusion. Vermits de meeste bands die aan het jaarlijkse NBK (Nederlandse Brass Band Kampioenschappen) deelnemen veel jonge muzikanten in hun rangen hebben, is dit werk overwegend jeugdig van karakter - vooral in de hoekdelen. Een arpeggio-figuur vormt de basis van het hoofdthema en het verschijnt in alle registers. Een tweede muzikaal gegeven dialogeert met die hoofdmelodie: samen stofferen ze de openingssectie van het werk. Dan volgt een koraalmatig middendeel: stapsgewijs worden korte en nadien steeds langere melodische fragmenten aan elkaar geregen tot de koraal in haar volle pracht integraal weerklinkt aan maat 205. Echte solopassages komen niet voor in dit werk, maar viadiverse kleine kamermuziek-combinaties wordt aan diverse musici de mogelijkheid geboden hun muzikale kwaliteiten te etaleren. In de laatste beweging worden een aantal muzikale bouwstenen van het begindeel hernomen en verder uitgewerkt om dan te besluiten in een majestueus slot.

Fantasia di Pasqua is a fantasy in which traditional Easter melodies have been used. The work is written for brass band with a separate brass quartet which, since this music is often performed in churches, the composer suggests should be positioned on a gallery. This creates a double choir effect and perfectly fits the Renaissance-like style. Each of the melodies is played in various dance-like cadences that, partly because of the double choir effect, will result in a very lively and original performance.In Fantasia di Pasqua speelt het (koper)kwartet een cruciale rol. De componist raadt aan dit kwartet vanuit een galerij te laten spelen: de zo gecreëerde dubbelkorigheid past bij de enigszins renaissancistische stijl van hetwerk. De gebruikte koraalmelodieën worden alle - veelal dansrijk - door het kwartet uitgevoerd in diverse cadansen, die mede door de dubbelkorigheid resulteren in een levendige en afwisselende uitvoering. Het kwartet hoeft nietper se te bestaan uit twee trompetten (cornetten) en twee trombones, maar kan naar believen worden samengesteld.In Fantasia di Pasqua wurden traditionelle Osterlieder verwendet. Das Stück ist für Brass Band mit separatem Blechbläserquartett geschrieben, welches bei Aufführungen in der Kirche von der Empore herab spielen sollte. Der so kreierte Doppelchor-Effekt passt ausgezeichnet zum etwas Renaissance artigen Stil, der bewusst gewählt wurde, da die meisten Choralmelodien aus der Renaissance stammen. Auf diese Weise gelingt eine sehr lebhafte und abwechslungsreiche Aufführung der Fantasia di Pasqua.Fantasia di Pasqua est une fantaisie basée sur des mélodies chorales pascales, issues de la Renaissance. Un quatuor (cuivres/bois) joue un rôle primordial dans le développement de la pièce. La musique pascale étant essentiellement destinée être interprétée dans un lieu de culte, le compositeur préconise de placer le quatuor sur le balcon. L’effet de double chœur ainsi créé donne la pièce un caractère varié et divertissant.

When I was approached to compose a work for brassband and church organ I already envisioned the concept I would use. It would indeed literally become a work for brassband and organ. Without the traditional solos, the organ would form an addition to the brassband orchestration as would the brassband provide an extra register for the organ. In short a homogeneous entity. The most important reason for doing this is quite simple. Since this work can only be performed in a church and because of the specific acoustics of the church, the brassband would sound in al its tone colour like an organ. By using certain registers of the organ and combining these with the brassband a wonderfulsound palette can be created. The use of complementary or contrasting tone quality is also possible. The primary theme of this composition is based on these three methods of “colouring”. As far as structure is concerned this work consists of two parts. slow fast. It is built on a number of motifs in which some behave like a consecutive canon. In the fast movement the primary motif develops into a fugue-like section. The canon and fugato are techniques frequently used in classical and contemporary organ literature. The liberal use of structure and motif has lead to the title. “Fantasy for Brassband and Organ”. Jan Bosveld zegt:Toen mij gevraagd werd een compositie te maken voor brassband en kerkorgel stond mij direct een duidelijk concept voor ogen. Het zou inderdaad een werk gaan worden voor brassband en orgel in de letterlijke zin vanhet woord. Geen traditioneel solowerk maar het orgel als uitbreiding van de brassbandbezetting en de brassband als een extra register van het orgel. Kortom, een homogeen geheel. De belangrijkste reden hiervoor is simpel. Het werkkan eigenlijk alleen in een kerk worden uitgevoerd en een brassband, in een kerk met zijn specifieke akoestiek, klinkt in al zijn kleurschakeringen als een orgel. Door het orgel in een bepaalde registratie te laten klinken kan,in combinatie met de brassband, een prachtige mengklank tot stand worden gebracht. Ook kan worden gekozen voor een klank die aanvullend is of contrasterend. Deze drie manieren van “kleuren” is het belangrijkste thema van de compositie.Wat vorm betreft bestaat het werk uit twee delen. langzaam snel. Het is opgebouwd uit een aantal motieven waarvan sommige zich gedragen als een snel opvolgende canon. In het snelle deel wordt het belangrijkste motief uitgebreidtot een fugato-achtig gedeelte. De canon en het fugato zijn technieken die zowel in de klassieke, als de hedendaagse orgelliteratuur veel worden gebruikt. Jacob de Haan wrote this arrangement for concert band, fanfare band and brass band and optional male voice choir. The original carol was written by the Austrian composer and organist Franz Gruber (1787-1863). He was asked to write Silent Night) on the 24th of December 1818 by the priest of the Church of St. Nicolas in Oberndorf, who had himself written the text. It is a romantic carol, with nuances of contemporary Austrian folk and Italian pastorale music.Jacob de Haan maakte dit arrangement voor blaasorkest met eventueel een mannenkoor. Het originele kerstlied werd geschreven door de Oostenrijkse componist en organist Franz Gruber (1787-1863). Stille Nacht componeerde hij op24 december 1818 in opdracht van de priester van de Sint Nikolaaskerk van Oberndorf, die de tekst voor dit lied zelf had geschreven. Stille Nacht is romantisch van karakter, heeft trekken van de Oostenrijkse volksmuziek vandie tijd, evenals enkele kenmerken van de Italiaanse pastorale muziek.Stille Nacht wurde vom österreichischen Komponisten und Organisten Franz Gruber am 24. Alpina Brass was the test piece for the first division of the Fêtes Cantonales on 8 and 9 June 2019 in Naters, Switzerland. It consists of three movements, and features a variety of aspects, as is common for a competitionwork. However, as a whole, it has been written in such a way that it can perfectly serve as a concert work as well. It is a challenging piece for every section and offers colourful and melodic as well as spectacular rhythmicsequences and a most impressive ending!Alpina Brass was het verplichte werk voor de eerste divisie van de Fêtes Cantonales op 8 en 9 juni 2019 in het Zwitserse Naters. Het is drieledig van vorm en er komen allerlei aspecten in aan bod, zoals dat voor eenconcourswerk gebruikelijk is. Het is echter zodanig geschreven dat het ook prima als concertwerk kan fungeren. Deze compositie bevat uitdagingen voor alles secties, evenals kleurrijke en melodische maar ook spectaculaireritmische opeenvolgingen en een indrukwekkend slotgedeelte! Alpina Brass war das Prüfungsstück für die erste Division beim Kantonalen Musikfest am 8. und 9. Juni 2019 in Naters (Schweiz). Es besteht aus drei Sätzen und zeichnet sich durch verschiedenste Aspekte aus, wie es beiWettbewerbsstücken üblich ist. Insgesamt ist es jedoch so geschrieben, dass es sich auch bestens als Konzertstück eignet. Das Stück ist für alle Instrumentengruppen anspruchsvoll und bietet lebendige, melodische, aber auchspektakuläre rhythmische Sequenzen sowie einen beindruckenden Schluss! Alpina Brass est l’œuvre imposée pour la première division des Fêtes Cantonales des 8 et 9 juin 2019 Naters, Suisse. Elle comprend trois mouvements, et inclut une multitude d’éléments différents, typiques pour une œuvrede concours. David Well composed ‘X-mas for Three’ for three young pupils of his, who wished to give a Christmas concert. He arranged six well-known Christmas songs for them, and their first performance was a great success. This was reason for the composer to adapt the piece for ‘orchestra’ by adding percussion. The title has stayed the same, and the work can still be played by as few as three musicians, but as the saying goes: “The more, the merrier”! ‘X-mas for Three’ consists of the following parts : 1. Dit was de reden voorde componist om het stuk geschikt te maken voor ‘orkest’ en voegde daarom percussie toe. De titel is gelijk gebleven en het stuk kan nog steeds met z’n drieën gespeeld worden maar met meer mag ook en dat is natuurlijk nog veelleuker.‘X-mas for Three’ bestaat uit de volgende delen: 1. Klaas van der Woude has based his arrangement An Old Swedish Hymn on an old pastoral hymn from Dalarna. This beautiful melody even attracted ABBA as they used it as the opening music for some of their concerts. Van der Woude’s arrangement is in classical style making it suitable for any occasion. Voor deze titel bewerkte Klaas van der Woude de oude Zweedse psalm Gammal fäbodpsalm från Dalarna (Oude pastorale hymne uit Dalarna). Maar dit is niet zomaar een deuntje... Hij koos hiermee een bekende melodie die ook ABBAbij enkele concerten als openingstune gebruikte! De bewerking van Klaas van der Woude is in klassieke stijl, geschikt voor welke gelegenheid dan ook.Klaas van der Woude bearbeitete einen alten schwedischen Psalm namens Gammal fäbodpsalm från Dalarna (Alte Pastoralhymne aus Dalarna“) in diesem Stück für Brass Band. Damit wählte er nicht irgendeine Melodie, war doch dieses Lied immerhin schon in einigen Konzerten von ABBA als Eröffnungsmelodie erklungen! Klaas van der Woudes Bearbeitung ist im klassischen Stil gehalten und somit für jeden Anlass geeignet. Gammal Fäbodpsalm Från Dalarna d’Oskar Lindberg (1887-1955) est un hymne pastoral basé sur une vieille mélodie de Dalécarlie, province historique de la Suède. La Dalécarlie présente de magnifiques paysages où dominent forêts, petites montagnes, et lacs scintillants. L’arrangement de Klaas van der Woude conserve l’authenticité de la mélodie originale.

Jamaica is an island in the Caribbean. In 1494 it was discovered by Christopher Columbus, who used it as private property until 1509. After some skirmishes it fell under British rule and the sugar trade on the island flourished. After the abolition of slavery in 1834 it was only granted Home Rule in 1944, but it remained a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations. Whereas the export of cane sugar used to be Jamaica’s main export product for many years, nowadays music has taken over this role. At first American music used to be very popular on the island. Later, however, Jamaican musicians started to experiment and thus in the end created their ownmusical style called Reggae. Well-known Reggae musicians are Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. The most important instruments used in Reggae are the bass and the drums. Together they form the base for the style: the riddim. A bass drum accent on the second and fourth beat are characteristic of a typically reggae drum beat. To this syncopic patterns are often added. The rhythm guitarist plays chords in a characteristic Reggae rhythm, not on, but between the beats. Jamaica is een eiland in het Caribisch-gebied. Andrew Lloyd Webber was born in London, England in 1948 and has become probably the most well respected of all composers of musicals, with many of his works being household names. All I Ask of You is one of the main songs from his award winning musical Phantom of the Opera. Son amour obsessionnel pour la jeune cantatrice Christine, le pousse promouvoir sa carrière tout prix. Mais quand il s’aperçoit qu’elle est éprise de Raoul, Vicomte de Chagny et ami d’enfance de la cantatrice, la fureur s’empare de lui. Il élabore de nombreux complots aussi terrifiants que dramatiques mais finit par cesser de poursuivre Christine et disparaît jamais.All I Ask Of You a été repris, juste titre, par divers grands interprètes dont Barbra Streisand, et de nombreux arrangements en ont été réalisés. Cette superbe version pour Orchestre d’Harmonie est signée Peter Kleine Schaars.

This composition is based on the march from Henry Purcell’s Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II, a work written in 1694. In this fantasia, various movements flow from one to the next following the main theme; these movements not onlyelaborate on the theme, but also contrast with it. At times, the thematic material diverges so much, that the work acquires a character of its own; however, the composer often refers back to fragments of the theme. This work was test piece in the 4thdivision of the Dutch National Brass Band Championships (NBK) in 2017.Deze compositie is gebaseerd op de mars uit Henry Purcells Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II, een werk uit het jaar 1694. They gave the first performance in January 2012.The commission was for a bright and breezy march that the band could use as their theme tune, so Marcho Brioso falls into the composer’s series of Broadway-style marches, which includes Slipstream, The Bandwagon and Jubiloso. After a short introduction a solo cornet plays the main theme, accompanied by a euphonium counter-melody. A secondary phrase from the horns and baritones leads to a tutti version of the main theme which is followed by the traditional ‘bass’ strain. A change of key heralds thetrio section, which features a cantabile melody on euphonium; this is then taken up by the full band after a short bridge passage and further change of key.This takes us back to the home key which sees a quiet staccato version of the main theme lead to a recapitulation and a short coda which brings the march to a close. Sinfonietta: The Town Beneath the Cliff was commissioned by Holmestrand Ungdomskorps from Vestfold in Norway. The work is in four movements: a spectacular fanfare followed by a ‘moto perpetuo’-like toccata. The third movement Hymn is a beautiful piece of music allowing the band to show its musicality and sound. The last movement Scherzo Finale opens with a short phrase from Holmestrand’s own ‘town song’ Holmestrandsangen, which comes again in full at the end of the piece, accompanied by a florid passage based on the opening theme.Sinfonietta: The Town Beneath the Cliff werd geschreven in opdracht van het Holmestrand Ungdomskorps uit Vestfold in Noorwegen. Het werk bestaat uit vier delen: eerst een spectaculaire fanfare, gevolgd door een moto perpetuo-achtige toccata. Het derde deel, Hymn, is een prachtig stukje muziek waarin de muzikaliteit en klank van de band fraai tot hun recht kunnen komen.
