Three Jazz Carols as the title suggests is a collection of 3 traditional Christmas carols that have been jazzed up. This fantastic collection has been arranged for SATB chorus and Piano accompaniment by Will Todd. This superb collection was originally arranged for Andrew Earis and the Choir of St Martin in the Fields and first performed as part of Jazz Carols from St Martin in the Fields on 22 December 2012.

Will Todd’s Jazz Missa Brevis gives new life to the sung Latin Mass texts in an accessible short setting which embraces a variety of jazz styles from the swinging jazz waltz Kyrie to the up-beat Latin-groove Gloria. The smooth jazz ballad Sanctus 7/8 Benedictus and soulful Agnus Dei complete this inspiring Mass setting. Underpinned by Todd’s characteristic jazz harmonies and melodic craftsmanship it is suitable for performance both liturgically and as part of a concert by Mixed Choirs of all abilities. The work can be accompanied by Piano alone (as written or extemporised) Jazz Trio (Piano Bass and Drums)or jazz ensemble (Alto Saxophone 2 Trumpets and jazz trio – parts available separately).

Three jazz hymns. These jazz arrangements of well-known hymns were written for Andrew Earis and choirs of St Martin-in-the-Fields, London for various services and BBC broadcasts from that church. The setting of Come down, O Love divine supplies some new harmonic moves to Vaughan Williams? lovely tune Down Ampney, gradually adding vocal harmony through the verses, with a short descant section in the final verse. The compound-time arrangement of God is Love, which can also be sung to the supplied words of Charles Wesley?s hymn Love Divine, again adds more of Todd?s iconic jazz harmonies and textures in the vocal parts with each successive verse. The setting of Let all mortal flesh keep silence is structured to gradually build layers over the moody piano chords and the pedal harmony. At the end the music builds to a large climax for ?Lord most high?. The hymns can be performed using the supplied piano part or using the chord symbols above. Double bass may also be used in addition to piano, again following the supplied chord symbols, and parts for optional jazz ensemble are available. Performers of these hymns should feel free to include the congregation or audience in imaginative ways.

This is a highly effective concert setting of the Latin Missa Brevis in which Chilcott's Jazz influences come to the fore. Originally commissioned for upper voices by Cheryl Dupont and the New Orleans Children's Chorus the work embraces a variety of Jazz styles. The Kyrie has real groove the Gloria swings the Sanctus sits right back the Benedictus hums along and the Agnus Dei draws inspiration from the Blues. The voices are underpinned by a characterful Piano accompaniment which can be played as written or serve as a guide and bass and drums can join in ad lib to add the flavour of an authentic Jazz combo. This is gorgeous soulful music in an utterlyoriginal setting.
