The Richard Wagner Complete Edition presents the composer's entire output for the first time in a reliable form. The conductor Michael Balling, in the early years of the 20th century, attempted to make Wagner's work more accessible for research and performance, but the edition only reached 10 volumes - some with grave shortcomings - and was discontinued after Balling's death in 1925. A further attempt at a complete edition by Otto Strobel was abandoned at the preliminary stages.This third attempt at a complete edition will be the first scholarly, critical edition, based on an evaluation of all the accessible source materials and the latest findings of serious Wagner research. As the edition is also intended for practical performance, the musical text has been kept free of philological insertions - these are listed in the appendices of each volume in the Critical Commentary. Numerous, partly unpublished works - some relatively unknown - and variant versions are published here for the first time. The edition presents authentic texts for Wagner specialists and researchers and critically based performing materials. Contrary to widely held opinions, even the well-known works of Wagner are not necessarily available in reliable editions. The genesis, history and performances directed by Wagner himself are extensively documented so as to present as complete an image as possible of Wagner's compositional intentions. / Divers

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy completed his first oratorio St. Paul Op.36 in 1836 at the age of twenty-seven. The first version which was premiered on 22 May 1836 was then extensively revised by the composer. This second version which at the same time served as the basis for the published version was premiered as early as October that year in Birmingham. The acclaim with which the oratorio was received was exceptional. Within eighteen months of completing the score Mendelssohn was able to list fifty performances of the work. Robert Schumann praised the work effusively and even Richard Wagner who later denigrated Mendelssohn was full of admiration. Today St. Paul belongs to the core repertoire of sacred choral music.This Urtext edition of the oratorio edited by the internationally-recognised Mendelssohn scholar Michael Cooper is based on all critical sources. As well as the principal version of the work the score also includes for the first time numbers which were composed for the first version and subsequently removed. Suggestions of incest also appear in the story and there is no happy ending. The Saint of Bleecker Street is set incontemporary New York City in the Italian community in and around Bleecker Street. Menotti's libretto concerns the young Annina who every Good Friday develops stigmata on her hands. Her possessive brother Michele fights tokeep the miracle-hungry neighbors away from her and to prevent her from becoming a nun. When Michele's mistress Desideria accuses him of being in love with his sister he stabs her in the back. Very ill Annina take the nun'sveil in a ceremony at her home and dies in the process.
