Timeless Cornish Melodies-As I sit myself down to write this brief foreword I ask myself can there be music more stirring than these old Cornish folk melodies? Though not Cornish myself (I confess to being born a little further up the road in Bristol) I feel I have spent sufficient time in these 'ere parts to resonate with the sturdy brass band tradition that continues to permeate this incomparably beautiful rugged county. One can almost detect a French 'accent' when listening to the piano music of Debussy and likewise speaking as a lapsed brass player there is undoubtedly something of the Cornish twang about Trelawny when played on a cornet or euphonium. Then again one gets a different yetentirely convincing effect upon hearing these melodies rendered on woodwind instruments; hence with a little gamesmanship on my part I am pleased to see my collection of these fifteen delectable ditties come to fruition in the form of arrangements for treble clef brass instruments (in B flat and E flat) trombone and tuba (bass clef) horn in F flute clarinet and bassoon.While many will find themselves humming the likes of Going up Camborne Hill Lamorna or The Helston Furry Dance even before they have turned to the first page - for these are indelibly intertwined with Cornish culture I wonder if I might draw your attention to The Cornish Squire The Pool of Pilate and Cold Blows the Wind Today Sweetheart which are quite simply sublime melodies perhaps needing that extra bit of help in bringing them to mind nowadays. In the best tradition of musical hand-me-downs Cornish folk music works equally ideally sung and played and only by doing so on a regular basis can such traditions hope to continue forward with vigour and authority. A legitimate way of achieving this is to revitalise the harmonic scheme of these ancient tunes and bring them up to date for a modern audience; after all it was such an approach that fuelled the imagination of Benjamin Britten and Ralph Vaughan Williams in decades past while skilfully paying homage to the

French composer Alain Louvier (b. 1945) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where he won the 1968 Prix de Rome. His L'Hydre À Cinq Têtes makes for an exciting addition to the repertoires of the Horn Trombone Alto Saxophone Clarinet and Bassoon. As suggested by the title this Louvier work is influenced by a serpent-like water monster in Greek mythology the Lernaean Hydra who possessed many heads. Louvier's composition is virtousic for all instruments exploiting extended techniques such as ornamentations articulations and breath notes amongst other elements. With a typical performancelasting around four minutes Louvier's L'Hydre À Cinq Têtes is perhaps ironic in being adaptable to five different solo instruments; Horn Trombone Alto Saxophone Clarinet or Bassoon with Piano accompaniment. L'Hydre À Cinq Têtes is a challenging yet inspiring work for advanced players.

Cellist conductor composer and musicologist René Berthelot (1903-1999) was influential in leading the Orleans Conservatory to obtain a high profile reputation. His Variations Brèves for Horn and Piano contribute to a significant catalogue of compositions by the composer. Published in 1973 a typical performance of Pastoral And Rustic Dance lasts around four minutes. Characteristics include complex rhythms variation in time signatures and much contrast between the variations. Suitable to advanced Horn players Berthelot's VariationsBrèves is suitable to advanced Horn players providing an exciting alternative performance work.

Cor En Fa Et Piano-Contemporary Italian-French composer Armando Ghidoni brings together influences of both Italy and France in his music. Also as an expert on jazz the harmonies and rhythms of the composer's works reflect a huge diversity Poésie Gaîté for French Horn and Piano being no exception. Ghidoni is significant within the contemporary French music school and his works are regularly chosen as set pieces for leading national and international competitions. Poésie Gaîté reflects Ghidoni's mastery of a range of instruments and is suitable for intermediatestandard Horn players. With a typical performance lasting about 5 minutes and 15 seconds  Poésie Gaîté is an exciting addition to the French Horn repertoire.

Belgian composer Marcel Poot (1901-1988) was a professional composer professor and musician. He studied at the Belgian Conservatory and went on to attain success as an Organist and composer. His substantial compositions for wind and brass are still performed to this day  Légende for Horn in F and Piano being no exception. In 1925 Poot and several of his contemporaries founded 'The Synthetists' a group to rival 'Les Six' in France. They wished to inject dynamism into the conservative Belgian music scene through the composition of modern pieces. Légende for Horn andPiano reflects this whilst maintaining recognisable musical elements. Poot's Légende published in 1958 is in Ternary Form ending with a fat allegro coda. For intermediate to advanced Horn players Poot's Légende is an exciting addition to the repertoire.

Up And Away is designed to enable the beginner to experience the satisfaction of performing with others from the very first lesson up to the time when the student has acquired enough skill to be able to perform confidently with a school band or orchestra. The twelve pieces are arranged in order of increasing difficulty; notes rhythmic figures dotted notes ties rests dynamic markings slurs etc. are all introduced carefully. Chant Lointain is a piece for F Horn and Piano by Eugène Bozza. Written for intermediate players this melodious work is divided into three distinct parts: Slow (6/8) Allegro moderato (4/4) and Slow (6/8). Really energetic  Chant Lointain sees the Piano and the Horn answering to each other. The piece lasts a total of four minutes during which the Horn appears as a really majestic instrument. Romances for Horn and Piano-Camille Saint-Saëns composed his two Romances for Horn for two of the most respected French horn players of the time: Opus 67 in E major from 1866 is dedicated to Henri Chaussier; Opus 36 in F major from 1874 waswritten for Henri Garigue. Despite the illustrious recipients they are not virtuosic showpieces but as the term Romance suggests short ?Songs without words? that fully savour the typical romantic sound of the horn.Alongside the orchestral version Saint-Saëns also prepared a piano accompaniment for chamber music performances. Due to the fact that they are not overly technically demanding the Romances are also suitable for advancedstudents.
