The work belongs to a planned series of virtuosoduos 'meetings'. The first one (from 1982) is written for clarinet and harpsichord.Formally Second Meeting is very close to a familiar 'theme and variations' category although there are seven themes or melodies all quiteclosely related.In the autumn of the same year I decided to write a version of the piece for oboe and a small orchestra trying to remain reasonably faithful to the original (a la Ravel perhaps). Ursula Mamlok was born in Berlin in 1923, but was forced to emigrate via Ecuador to New York in 1939 because of her Jewish descent. In 2006 she returned to the city where she was born.In about three minutes, the small and charming two-part piece Kontraste [Contrasts] for oboe and harp captivates with clarity and limitation to the essentials. The name says it all: A lively humoresque is followed by a rather delicate, even almost melancholy second movement which is headed 'largo e mesto'. The composition was written in 2009/10 as a birthday present for the Swiss oboist - and this work's dedicatee - Heinz Holliger (and his wife, the harpist Ursula Holliger). / Hautbois Et Piano

An Evening in the Village was composed in 1908 as no. 5 of the Ten Easy Piano Pieces. It has become one of Bartók's favorite works which the composer himself was fond of playing at recitals. As he explained in an American interview it was ''an original composition that is ... with themes of my own invention but ... the themes are in the style of the Hungarian-Transylvanian folk tunes. There are two themes. The first one is a parlando-rubato-rhythm and the second one is more in a dance-like rhythm. The second one is more or less the imitation of a peasant flute playing.'' Bartók also orchestrated the piece in 1931 as no. 1 of HungarianSketches. In 2015 we are launching a series entitled Bartók Transcriptions for Music Students to mark the 70th anniversary of the composer’s death. This involves reissuing our tried publications and publishing some further new transcriptions that fulfill in every respect the strict aesthetic demands of the earlier ones. We trust these publications will allow us to introduce still more music students to the realm of one of the great geniuses of 20th-century music.

This was composed in 1962. The first movement is classically structured with a gracefully contoured first subject a forceful ensuing idea and a murmurously lyrical second subject; the secondmovement generates an intensity of feeling which is the greater for the very restraint of its language; and the finale effectively introduces calm moments to offset the prevailing syncopated ebullience.

The Oboe Sonata Op. 166 was the first of three Wind sonatas that Saint-Saëns wrote in his final year. Throughout his life he had been more familiar with Keyboard and Stringed instruments so thecomposer this time found himself in rather unfamiliar territory. Yet he instantly hit upon the inflections and special characteristics of these instruments. To ensure that the parts reflected the technical and tonal idiosyncrasiesof each instrument he asked advice of Wind soloists of his acquaintance before publication. His Sonata Op. 166 met with the highest approval of the oboist; a passage in a letter bears witness to this: ?It wentlike clockwork?. We were able to consult the autograph for the first time for this Urtext edition.

Giovanni Boni is a little known Italian composer from – presumably – the first half of the 18th century. Multiple records of composers with identical or similar names from that period can be found whocould indeed have been one and the same person and the Giovanni Boni at hand could have been any or none of them! Evelyn Rothwell edited and arranged four pieces from the Walsh edition of the “Solos for a GermanFlute Hoboy or Violin compos’d by Sigr. Giovanni Boni” into the Oboe Sonata In G for Oboe with Piano accompaniment.This hidden gem of Italian Baroque music should not be dismissed as the charmingly melodic sonata is a particular delight for musicians and audiences alike. The four movements (Preludio – Largo Allegro Alla Siciliana Allegro) can be played separatelyor together their total performance time is approximately 8:30 minutes.Boni’s Sonata In G is well within the capabilities of the average student or amateur Oboe player and aunique addition to the solo player’s repertoire!

Jean-Baptiste Loeillet (1680 - 1730) gained fame as a composer of elegant instrumental works. This Sonata in C Major for Oboe and Piano is edited and arranged by Evelyn Rothwell.
