(+)
Album for organ solo from the composer of the much-recorded 'Miroir?. The album consists of four pieces of between 2½ and 4 minutes' duration respectively. 'Play it cool!? was composed as the mandatory test piece in the 2012 First Breda International Organ Competition, with the Grote Kerk's four-manual Flentrop/Van den Heuvel instrument in mind. As the title suggests, the piece makes great play on syncopated, jazz- and rock-inflected figures. Suitable for advanced standard performers. 'The Messenger on the Hill?, while similarly syncopated and witty, is within easy reach of intermediate standard players. Laid out for two-manual instrument it features an almost continuous oscillating left-hand figure with right-hand melody and a very simple pedal part. 'Rejoice!? is an arrangement of a work for saxophone and organ, made at the request of, and in collaboration with, Thomas Trotter. A duo for contrasting manuals, with a simple, syncopated bass part in the pedals. Suitable for advanced standard performers. 'Passacaglia?, also for two-manual instrument, is composed almost entirely for the white notes. The simple passacaglia theme is repeated throughout on the pedals. Above this, melodic material derived from the theme is played in the right hand against a sustained, chordal left-hand accompaniment. Later on, there is dialogue between the hands, with some optional ornamentation in the right hand. Suitable for intermediate standard performers. / Orgue

Josef Rheinberger (1839-1901) was a prolific composer in almost every field but he found in the organ the medium best fitted to his genius and temperament. This seems to be proved by the fact that his reputation as an organ composer has grown and is now firmly established whereas his position in other branches has declined. His twenty sonatas and numerous other short pieces make up one of the most important contributions to the organ repertory. It may indeed be claimed that in the maintainance of a high level of quality and interest throughout a long series of works of both large and small scale his position as an organ composer is second only to that of Bach.

Josef Rheinberger (b. 1839 d. 1901) was a prolific composer in almost every field but he found in the Organ the medium best fitted to his genius and temperament. This seems to be proved by the fact that his reputation as an Organ composer has grown and is now firmly established whereas his position in other branches has declined. His twenty sonatas and his numerous shorter pieces (about a hundred) make up one of the most important contributions to the Organ repertory. It may indeed be claimed that in the maintenance of a high level of quality and interest throughout a long series of works of both large and small scale his position as an Organ composer issecond only to that of Bach. Sonata No. 19:The G minor Sonata is one of a small proportion of the twenty - No. 15 in D is another - concerning whose merits players are divided. It does not meet one half-way. It is the longest of the twenty: some monotony inevitably results from the use of the key of G for all its movements : its difficulties are of the ungrateful type : and the vigour of its first movement is often rough-even harsh. Yet it appears to be among the favourites of those who know it well; the late Dr. G. J. Bennett (a pupil of Rheinberger's and a devotee of the Sonatas) placed it among the best of the later numbers. Sonata No. 20:In spite of some inequalities No. 20 makes a worthy end to a fine series. Rheinberger's failing health at the time of its composition is no doubt responsible for a few moments of indecision especially in the Finale. The invention shows little if any falling off. In all the sonatas there are few better themes of the broad diatonic type than that which opens the first movement ; and the pleasant tunes of the Intermezzo and Pastoral and the swinging subject of the Finale are in the true Rheinberger vein. But the lack of a substantial fugal section is felt: it might well have come as a central portion of the Finale which

The Homage to Handel for Organ was composed ‘as an expression of thanks for having been elected as an honorary member of the Royal College of Organists in 1914. Karg-Elert responded to the honour with this work calling on inspiration from a composer ‘whom both England and German claim as their own’ at the time of the commencement of hostilities between the two nations. Sigfrid Karg-Elert was a German composer active in the early twentieth century whose broad output is eclipsed almost entirely by his works for harmonium and Organ instruments for which he was a gifted and prolific composer. His Organ works include the highly regarded Sixty-six Choral Improvisations andTwenty Choral Preludes and Postludes among others. Many of his works are active in Organ repertoire.

per organo. Par VASKS PETERIS. Peteris Vasks has written a large number of pieces for the organ, both original works and arrangements of his own pieces which had originally been written for strings. The Riga-based composer created his ideal sound image after listening to the famous organ of the Cathedral of Riga. The basic idea of the organ work 'Cantus ad pacem' is, as with almost all of his compositions, the personal understanding of nature: the beauty of nature, on the one hand, and the destruction of nature by man, on the other hand. Not presenting any great difficulties, Vasks' organ music displays an impressive variety of sounds, from the most intimate, restrained sounds to powerful chordal outbursts./ Répertoire / Orgue

Herbert Howells' Cradle Song for Organ. Composed in 1913. Duration: 1 minute 30 seconds. 'Almost a century before Rutter's piece was composed this equally brief - and not wholly dissimilar - work appeared. Marked Molto semplice in 3/8 time Howells's piece has fluently original harmonic interest and concentrates its simple initial idea with attractivelyflowing momentum. This is a perfect piece for a Christening service and would also make an impressive intermezzolike item in a recital of English organ music.' - The Organ

The Trois Impressions shows Karg-Elert both at his most Romantic and his most impressionistic. The movements’ nocturnal names Harmonies du Soir Claire de Lune and La Nuit are in French as the work is dedicated to Alexandre Guilmant the great French Organist of Trinity church in Paris. Sigfrid Karg-Elert was a German composer active in the early twentieth century whose broad output is eclipsed almost entirely by his works for harmonium and Organ instruments for which he was a gifted and prolific composer. His Organ works include the highly-regarded Sixty-Six Choral Improvisations Twenty Choral Preludes and Postludes amongothers. Many of his works are active in Organ repertoire.

Iain Farrington's Bluesday for solo Organ. Composed in 2010. Dedicated to Robert Houssart. 'Judging by this bunch of new publications the year 2010 was a busy one for British composers of organ music though quite why it has taken six or seven years for almost all of this music to appear remains unexplained. And if one were asked to guess the most recent work in terms of 'modem language' it would be this study from Iain Farrington. Dedicated to Robert Houssart this short piece combines - as one might infer from the title - certain phraseology from musical worlds not often encountered on a concert organ whether in a church or civicbuilding but it is not merely the thematic line (such as it is) that snakes in an uncertain manner but also the impacted sense of occasional harmony that speaks in a more modem musical language. None the less this intriguing composition would work best on a small instrument and is a fascinating piece to study at home.' - James Palmer

Par GRAY ALAN. The four organ sonatas of Alan Gray (1855-1935) stand as one of the largest contributions to the sonata repertoire by an English composer. Published around 1890, they also mark an advancement in the repertoire of potential concert works. Gray had not studied abroad and his sonatas demonstrate a compelling emergence of a distinctly English style of organ sonata after almost half a century of continental influence. All four sonatas show a strong command of not only writing for the instrument but also the art of registration. Gray?s indications are clear, logical, and practical. He writes for a symphonic organ of at least three manuals but many of the pieces could be played on an instrument of only two manuals. The use of contrasting manual colours between phrases and the incorporation of solo stops is notable for conveying Gray?s views on interpretation and his strong understanding of the instrument. / Date parution : 2022-05-31/ Recueil / Orgue

This work Jubilant March for Organ is one of many original works that Stainer composed for Novello. It suggests that the high esteem in which Stainer was held by his contemporaries for the excellence of his Organ playing was not misplaced and is quite a rare Stainer work by virtue of its non-religious nature.John Stainer’s life coincided almost exactly with the reign of Queen Victoria. From his humble beginnings as the son of a cabinet maker he rose through his own brilliant musical gifts application and vision to become one of the most celebrated musical persons of his time. He is still remembered for having reOrganized the St Paul’s choir and for raising musicalstandards among church musicians in general and for his pioneering musicological research into early music. His hymns and arrangements of carols retain some popularlity today as does his Passiontide oratorio The Crucifixion.

(+)
The Tune in E is Thalben-Ball’s own invention. In the Style of John Stanley almost certainly refers to the many works Stanley wrote for Organ that start with a slow short introduction followed by a Trumpet voluntary as in Tune in E.John Stanley was a contemporary of Handel’s who often came to the Temple Church to hear him play. Stanley directed many of Handel’s oratorios and continued to direct performances at Covent Garden of oratorios of other composers after Handel’s death.George Thalben-Ball succeeded Sir Henry Walford Davies in the position of Organist of Temple Church and remained there for nearly sixty years. Nico Muhly’s prelude for his friend the Rev'd James Mustard features slow-moving harmonies with a breathy warmth but it’s through a sparkling crystalline pane of arpeggios. Nico Muhly has an almost incomparable understanding of the capabilities of the Pipe Organ as a musical instrument but also an equally deep understanding of and even affection for its limitations making his Organ pieces extremely unique.

Albert W Ketèlbey's most popular works appear to have been a series of Orchestral tone poems like In a Persian Market that incorporate exoticism and demonstrate the high quality of his Orchestration. The Orchestral version of this piece included a Vocal line of male Voices calling for baksheesh which is absent from the Organ arrangement.Composer and arranger Albert W Ketèlbey is now almost unknown except for his work Bells Across the Meadows but until the time of the Second World War he strode the country’s musical stage like a giant of light musical entertainment. In 1929 he was declared ‘Britain’s greatest composer’ according to the number of performances of his works. Over the course of his career he was a church Organist musical director at London’s Vaudeville Theatre editor to several music publishing firms and Music Director of the Columbia Gramophone Company.

(+)
The first three notes of this piece are probably the most famous notes of all organ literature. Its titanic diminished chords thunderous pedal lines and theatrical dynamic contrasts have brought this work notoriety beyond the church and concert hall and into films ranging from ?Fantasia? to ?Rollerball.? The toccata (derived from the word toccare to touch) was a technical work in which difficulties of execution were always present Rather than considering that this work presents a fugue preceded by a toccata the title of this work is best interpreted as the brilliant composition of a fugue phrase itself weaving through the blazing triumphant chords. After theannouncement of the theme the rhythm of sixteenths continues almost without interruption to the final measures.

The Blue Rose Variations is one of several works in which the composer has drawn on ragtime and blues. Henry Purcell spent almost half his life as Organist of Westminster Abbey but surprisingly wrote very little organ music himself. Bryan Hesford has rectified this with this volume of pieces arranged and transcribedform other sources. The pieces have been chosen with a view to introducing students to independent part-playing at a technical standard somewhat simpler than that of JS Bach.

Martin Luther. Par SCHNEIDER ENJOTT. On the occasion of the quincentenary of Reformation Day in 2017, the composer Enjott Schneider thoroughly studied Martin Luther the individual and all his contradictions. The result is a brilliant, demanding organ symphony which is perfect for concerts on the subject of Reformation and Martin Luther. The composer describes the five movements of the symphony as follows: '1st movement: Wir glauben all an einen Gott with its quintuplet-like beginning is very Gregorian in style, outlining the range of Lutheran emotionalism between the Middle Ages and the modern era. The irrationality of 'faith' ultimately has priority over any thought and evidence. At the beginning of the movement, sounds of knocking on wood remind of the nailing of the Ninety-Five Theses to the doors of churches in Wittenberg. The chorale melody sometimes hides with an almost rough medieval saltarello, referring to Luther's robustness and vitality with which he knew to carry away even common people. 2nd movement: In 1530, the electoral prince of Saxony presented to Luther at Coburg Castle the golden signet ring with the 'Luther rose' which became the symbol of his theology of grace. A white heart with black cross is fixed on a five-petalled rose. To him, 'white' is the colour of angels and ghosts, 'black' stands for the pain of crucification: 'The just shall live by faith, but by faith in the Crucified.' But the fact that the rose and the heart are the dominating symbols shows how Catholic Marian piety remained an ingredient of Luther's spirituality throughout his life. In line with the dominant five-petal structure of the rose, this movement was composed, to a large extent, in accordance with the floating, lyrical rhythm in 5/8 time. 3rd movement: The omnipresence of death and dying – from the plague and war to the never-ending dangers of daily life – was an essential part of the world view of that time. Fears ensued that might heighten into the grotesque, e.g. in the pictures of Hieronymus Bosch. The 'Danse macabre' was a popular motif in those years. Luther's chorale 'Mitten wir im Leben sind / mit dem Tod umfangen' from 1524 ('Enchiridion' from Erfurt) is based on the Gregorian chant 'Media vita in morte sumus' created in France around 750 and, with its idea of transience, inspired a simplistic air. 4th movement: The famous confession delivered at the Diet of Worms in 1521, 'I stand here and can say no more. God help me. Amen', are not Luther's words but the version later used as text for a pamphlet. However, it represents quite plainly the straightforwardness and inevitability of his mission. Musically, it was made into a 'perpetuum mobile', i.e. a dogged, ostinato and never-ending musical air. 5th movement: The 'Mighty Fortress', on the other hand, is one of the great symbols of Martin Luther which, with its shining C major key, embodies the Protestant ideology and willful nature of the Reformation unlike any other song. Heinrich Heine called it the 'Marseille anthem of the Reformation', Friedrich Engels the 'Marseillaise of the Peasants' Wars'. This disputability is not thought through to the end but rather interrupted: With a jubilant 'birdcall version' of the melody, the finale shows a rather chamber-music-like side of the 'ideals of freedom of Christians'.'/ Répertoire / Orgue

The Partita composed in 1971 is inscribed 'For the Rt Hon. Edward Heath M.P. Prime Minister'. Its five movements enjoy the almost improvisatory freedom that is characteristic for Howells' writing yet they are bound together by a kind of cyclic feeling engendered by a fairly consistent use of an original mode: it descends from C to C as follows: C B B flat G F sharp E E flat C. The Partita exploits both the melodic and harmonic implications of the mode.
