The firstperformance was given by Rachel Nicholls and Paul Plummer at St. Andrew’s Church Presteigne on 29 August 2005.Composer's NoteGladestry Quatrains is a setting of 12 short poems by Jo Shapcott from her collection of the same title. It originated in a project for the 2003 Presteigne Festival called A Garland for Presteigne in which 10 composers associated with the Festival were asked to write a short song each celebrating the Welsh border country the choice of poetryranged widely and I chose two of Jo Shapcott’s evocative miniatures (still adding up to slightly less than the timing I had been requested to provide!). As I wrote them I started to make sketches for some more settings from the same collection and the Presteigne Festival of Music and the Arts very kindly commissioned this new larger song-cycle proper for their 2005 Festival. The original pair of poems form the third (Gwaithla Brook) and last (Cefn Hir) of the songs in which the eighth combines two poems Burl Hill and Newchurch. Throughout I have been aware of the sights and sounds of nature the character of the landscape and the sense of history and timelessness of this beautiful part of the world as reflected in Jo Shapcott’s poetry as well as (I hope) the wit and directness of her expression. The whole work though it has eleven songs still lasts only about 20 minutes the concision of the texts and the need to find musical equivalents to this was an important part of the concept of the piece.        John McCabe 2005

Moments in which, induced by adrenalin, the blood pressure rises. Blood vessels which seem to constrict, pump enormous quantities of blood the pressure of which might make one believe that the head is going to explode. In The Judgment, an innocent opening story leads to one of the most unusual showdowns in world literature: The beloved father sentences his son to death by drowning; the son immediately obeys since his life, his existence almost explodes, becomes blurred, dissolves at the moment the judgment is pronounced. For me, the 'self' driving him – I imagine this as a high sound in the inner ear – could only be a soprano. This is why the actual 'fall' has turned out to be clear, almost friendly and why Georg only seems to want to breathe a soft and quiet 'Dear parents, I have always loved you' during the fall while no longer keeping the singing tone, shortly before death, almost casually, takes hold of him. This work When Christ Was Born of Mary Free sets the words of a traditional carol dating from the 15th century sensitively in D minor for the verse moving to a more joyous F for the Chorus. Darke’s papers list this piece as having been scored for Soprano solo Chorus SATB and Piano. Harold E Darke was an English composer and Organist of international renown. Darke composed extensively for choir and Organ. In 1916 he established the Monday lunchtime Organ recitals at St Michael’s Cornhill which continue to this day the longest-running such series in the world. His setting of Christina Rosetti’s poem In the Bleak Midwinter created a melody and lilting Organ accompanimentthat has never fallen from favour. It is regarded as one of the greatest of Christmas carols.

Volta La Terrea Fronte Alle Stelle is a solo aria from the opera Un Ballo In Maschera (A Masked Ball). It is presented here for solo Soprano Voice with Piano accompaniment in standard notation with added chord symbols.Scribe's libretto to Verdi's 'A Masked Ball' concerns the real-life assassination of King Gustave III of Sweden at a masked ball in 1792 but adds a love story to what was probably a political murder. The King Ricardo is in love with Amelia wife of his friend Renato. Renato warns the King to beware a plot to kill him. The King visits Ulrica the mystic and she says he will die by the next friendly hand he shakes. The plotdevelops and ends with an exploration of the concepts of innocence and remorse.

Commissioned by and written for Nicola Walker Smith in October 1992 this set of songs takes as its starting point material from The Upside-Down Violin at Expo ’92 in Seville by The Michael Nyman Band and the Orquestra Andalusi de Tetuoan. The Moroccan orchestra plays only monophonically and consequently I wrote a ‘pure’ melody line - that is one not built on harmony. The harmonic content of Anne de Lucy Songs is thus derived from the melody for the first time in my work. The text is an ode to the great Renaissance theorist and musical speculator Salinas by Fray Luis de Leon.

French composer Pierre Boulez (b. 1925) is best known for his serialist experimental and electronic compositions. However his work for Soprano Mixed Choir and Piano Reduction  Le Soleil Des Eaux also remains regularly performed. Having studied at the Paris Conservatoire under Olivier Messiaen Boulez soon began his own creative experiments. Amongst his earlier works was his cantata  Le Soleil Des Eaux composed in the late 1940s. The work has since been revised many times. Based on poems by René Char  Le Soleil Des Eaux is atonal exploitingmany techniques. For advanced choirs and Soprano soloists Boulez's Le Soleil Des Eaux provides a challenging yet riveting performance work.

Kaija Saariaho 's Emilie Suite was a joint commission by Carnegie Hall, New York City, Cité de la Musique, Paris, Luzerner Sinfonieorchester and Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg.
