Barumba is an original composition by former iTromboni Bass Trombonist Kenneth Pearce. It was the very first original composition written for the ensemble. Barumba is a light hearted, playful Bossa Nova which attempts to capture a bit of the droll humour of its composer! This 3-minute composition is scored for 4 Tenor Trombones, 1 Bass Trombone and is suitable for medium-advanced performers. Trombone 1 contains a repeated 16 bar improvised solo and Trombone 3 contains a high D!

Bach's Motet Der Geist hilft unser Schwachheit auf (The Spirit gives aid to our weakness) BWV 226 was composed in 1729. The Motet was written for the funeral of the blessed rector Ernesti, Professor of poetry at Leipzig University. It is written for eight voices of two four-part choirs. Mr. Sauer has done a magnificent job transcribing all six of Bach's choral motets BWV 225-230 for 8-part Trombone Ensemble. This is a major undertaking. All are very worthy additions to the Trombone Ensemble repertoire. This work for double 4-part choir of three movements is about 7 1/2 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers. The top voices in each choir have parts supplied in both alto and tenor clef.

Tre Volti (Three Faces) has been commissioned by the renowned ââ¬ÅNew Trombone Collectiveââ¬Â, exclusively existing of top-trombonists from the Dutch symphony orchestras. The world première was given by the commissioners and took place in ââ¬ÅDe Doelenââ¬Â in Rotterdam on april 16th 2011 - during the ââ¬ÅSlide Factoryââ¬Â - European Trombone Festival. The composer aimed to illustrate 3 different aspects of the instrument in as many movements. Effetti e Tecniche (Effects and Techniques) displays a large amount of specific spectacular and acrobatic possibilities and also various colors and sounds by using different mutes. It contains many ââ¬Åglissandiââ¬Â as well as clusters with semi tones andquarter tones, all being ââ¬Åtypicalââ¬Â for the trombone indeed. The Lamento Lirico (Lyrical Lamento) combines the rather serious and noble voice of the trombone with an aspect which not automatically is connected to that instrument: the melodical character. The overall atmosphere of this movement is somewhat sad and strained and refers to the many beautiful but rather dark passages in the orchestral and opera literature where the trombone section as such is used ...The final movement is called Sonata Antica (Antique Sonata) and is directly inspired by two ââ¬Åsonatasââ¬Â for 3 and 4 trombones by Daniel Speer (1636 - 1707). It illustrates the ââ¬Åhistoricalââ¬Â dimension of the trombone: indeed it was the only brass instrument being able to play chromatically - many centuries before all other brass instruments - thanks to the unique slide system which even during the Middle Ages was applicable already. The antiphonal position, the dialoguing motives and the ââ¬Åneo-early-baroqueââ¬Â idiom really pay homage to Daniel Speer: he composed a certain number of pieces for brass instruments indeed and the composer used thematic material from his Sonatas in d and a in various ways, thus concluding this varied composition in a festive way.

Pachelbel's grand Chorale Partita with Seven Variations in G is based on the 17th Century Protestant German hymn tune Alle Menschen mussen sterben (All of Mankind is Mortal) by Jakob Hintze. The original form of the work was in C major with eight variations, composed for Organ. Bach, being greatly influenced by Pachelbel, later took up the melody for use in one of his Cantatas.Keith Terrett has done a great job arranging these elaborate variations of about 6 minutes in length for a Trombone quintet of advanced performers.

Joshua F'it de Battle of Jericho is a well-known African-American spiritual, most likely composed by slaves in the early 19th century. Early versions used the word f'it for fought. The words harken to the biblical story of the Battle of Jericho, where Joshua led the Israelites to victory against Canaanite armies.Put into perspective, Joshua's battle is really against slavery and the desire for freedom, like the themes of so many other spirituals from that era. This rousing arrangement in swing-style for 8-part Trombone ensemble by James Markey is about two minutes in length, featuring the 1st and 8th parts and is for advanced performers. The mp3 sound clip is taken from Mr. Markey's solo Bass Trombone album, on base, and includes star performers including Joseph Alessi, David Finlayson and Lisa Albrecht.

Partite is a continuous--that is, connected--set of variations on the chorale melody Herzliebster Jesu, was hast do verbrochen translated in some modern hymnals Ah Holy Jesus, how has Thou offended?. The basic form of the work is rather traditional--a theme played by bass trombone preceded by an introduction and followed by a series of variations. A more fundamental aspect, however, is the shape created by a succession of moods: the introduction is questioning, or perhaps questing; the statement of the theme is quiet but troubled; the three variations following become gradually more mocking and sarcastic, but are overcome by the serene and accepting final section, which incorporates one of J.S. Bach's most moving harmonizations of the chorale. Partite was commissioned by the University of Georgia Trombone Choir, Dr. Phillip Jameson, Director. It is dedicated to the memory of Mark A. Lea. Hill Country Miniatures for 8-part Trombone Ensemble was written by Richard J. Lawn in 2002 for the Trombone Choir at the University of Texas and its director Nathaniel Brickens. The work is dedicated to Donald Knaub its former director. It has become a staple in the American Trombone Ensemble repertoire since its original release. Mr. Lawn explains in the notes, his deep emotional connection to the Hill Country land and to his days at the Eastman School of Music, hearing the legendary Trombone Choir led by Emory Remington and following through to his days at the University of Texas with Knaub and Brickens, all of which inspired him to compose this work. This music is about 15 minutes in length and is for advanced performers. The four movements of the work are: Hickory Cove - September 2001 - a lyrical, somber and solemn introductory movement. Smithwick - a jaunty piece reflecting the Scottish and English heritage of this tiny Texas spot. The Narrows - As part of the Colorado River narrows, it twists and turns its way through the Texas Hill Country. You can hear the gentle waters winding through the cliffs and slopes. Blue Bonnet Boogie - The springtime brings a profusion of the Blue Bonnet, the Texas state flower. A sea of these swaying in the breeze brings out the good old down-home boogie-woogie! A jazz solo featuring Bass Trombone (written for Bill Reichenbach in mind) with solo written out or improvised using chord symbols adds a festive finish. Cherry Classics is proud to be the new distributor of this great work.

Symphonie Fantastique was written in 1830 as one of the first program symphonies in musical history. The Witches' Sabbath is the fifth and final movement tells the story of the author himself amongst a hideous gathering of sorcerers, monsters and witches who have come together for his funeral. The original melody from the first movement is now a vulgar and grotesque dance. Berlioz also combines the Dies irae melody to strike even more fear into the listener. This arrangement of about 10 minutes in length by Randall Malmstrom is a full transcription of the movement and is appropriate for advanced performers.

The Evening-Watch was written in 1925, when Holst lived in Thaxted, England having had to temporarily leave his teaching duties because of overwork and illness. This setting of Henry Vaughan's ‘Dialogue between the Body and the Soul' was too austere for listeners of its day and it remained out of print for thirty years, until 1965. Its mood of calm strength and passionate resignation sounds as if it belongs to the 1960's. This beautiful arrangement for 8-part trombone choir by Ronald Baron seems altogether appropriate given the instrument's vocal character, its frequent use for music at funerals and Holst's other musical passion; his short career as a trombonist. The 4 minute piece is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.

Stephansdom is a new composition, descriptive of the iconic St. Stephan's Cathedral in central Vienna. Ryan Diefendorfer wrote this work for the Indiana University Trombone Ensemble for Bass Trombone solo and Trombone Choir (6-part) to be performed by Carl Lenthe at the 2012 Eastern Music Festival. Ryan's work was awarded the winner of the 2012 Eastern Trombone Workshop National Composition Competition.St. Stephen's Cathedral, also known as Stephansdom, is one of Vienna's most remarkable city icons. Dating back to 1137, Stephandsom towers above the rest of Vienna's skyline and has been a constant presence in the lives of the Viennese for nearly one thousand years. Among the buildings that the Viennese find closest to their hearts, Stephansdom is certainly one of themI. GroundbreakingThe first movement depicts the troubles that St. Stephen's Cathedral had in getting its groundbreaking as a church. The opening of the piece marks the celebration of the Viennese when St. Stephen's was first constructed in 1137, during the Romanesque era. However, the church faced many issues—from being destroyed by the Babenberg Empire to being decimated by a fire—before the church began its construction in the Gothic style in 1307. The first movement depicts these struggles before resolving to an open chord.II. StefflSteffl, the nickname for Stephansdom's soaring north tower, is one of the characteristics of the cathedral that the Viennese find so endearing. This movement is very upbeat and is meant to portray the excitement shared by the Viennese for this beautiful addition to Stephansdom, which was completed in 1433. Stephansdom's north tower is the tallest structure in Vienna, and distinctly stands out within Vienna's skyline.III. 1945As World War II was coming to a close in 1945, Stephansdom's roof caught fire from a neighboring building, destroying large portions of the church. One climax occurs at m.30, which depicts Stephansdom's great bell, the Pummerin, crashing down to the ground. This movement depicts the chaotic nature of the raging fire of 1945.IV. Anton PilgrimAnton Pilgrim was the last, and perhaps most beloved, architect who worked on St. Stephen's Cathedral in the Gothic style. One of his most famous projects was the St. Stephen's organ loft, which is depicted by an opening organ-like canon. The final movement to the piece ends in a chorale-like fashion, demonstrating the Viennese's love for Anton Pilgrim, as well as Stephansdom, one of Vienna's most iconic sights. This work of 12 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor BWV 565 is possibly the most famous work in the organ repertoire. It was written as early as 1704 while the composer was in his teens, which could explain some of its unusual features. It first appeared in publication in 1833 by way of Felix Mendelssohn. The first appearance of this work as a transcription and recording for brass came in 1979 by Frederick Mills and the Canadian Brass, becoming an iconic work in the ensemble's repertoire.Ralph Sauer has had a great deal of success with his transcriptions of Bach's works. This work of about 9 minutes in length for 8-part Trombone Ensemble of advanced performers is brilliantly thought out and can be the cornerstone of a concert program.

Respighi completed the 4-movement set of Biblical episodes titled Church Windows in 1925. He actually composed the music first and then added the titles, dispelling any theory of specific religious fervor on his part, but rather creating a general mood with the music.St. Michael the Archangel, the “battle-scene†2nd movement is about 6 minutes in length. Mr. Malmstrom has once again shown his talent for arranging large works for Trombone octet. It is appropriate for advanced performers.

* The Prelude in E-flat, subtitled “St. Anne†gets its nickname from the similarity of its fugue theme and a hymn tune by William Croft, however, scholars feel there is no realistic connection, as Croft's work was only known in the British Isles.* Originally written for organ in 1736, this great music is the crowning achievement of a large volume of works for that instrument.* Mr. Sauer's 11-minute arrangement of this monumental Bach Prelude is brilliantly worked out to the last detail for an 8-part Trombone choir of advanced performers.

Henry Wolking's The Best Dam Trombone Quintet Ever may just be! It is a fun, feel-good piece to perform and to listen to. The undulating rhythms and close harmonies produce a pleasing mood with a hint of a jazz feel. The music gives you a big hug. Here is a description of the work by the composer: In the summer of 2017 my wife and I moved to the Nevada Dam town of Boulder City. The town began as a construction camp in early 1930s for the workers of the Boulder Dam (later renamed the Hoover Dam). The dam is one of the worlds great construction projects of the 20th century and has over a million yearly visitors. My house is less than ten minutes away from the dam, and because the dam in one way or another affects everyone living in this unique Nevada town, my newest trombone quintet (composed in January 2018) is the best, well you get the picture. It is a high energy single movement work inspired by the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. Ranges are fairly moderate with a high C# in the first trombone at the end. This is a fun romp for five dam fine trombonists. The 4 1/2 minute work is appropriate for advanced performers.

Crucifixus by Antonio Lotti is part of his Credo in F. This motet of 8 voices is a wonderful example of polyphony with many suspensions thrown in for good measure. The music is sweet with a beautiful sadness, making it a work that touches most listeners in a very personal way.Mr. Brink has transposed the work down a fifth into the key of F minor (resolving to F major at the conclusion), otherwise keeping the music true to its origins. Nabucco is the opera which established Verdi's reputation as a great composer and even he realized its importance as he noted this is the opera with which my artistic career really begins. iTromboni alum Kenneth Pearce and Andrew Poirier have skillfully set the Overture to Nabucco to highlight the beautiful melodies and technical flare in their arrangement for trombone quintet (2 altos, 2 tenors, bass). As in the original, it all begins with a stately trombone chorale, hints at the big melody of Va, pensiero (the great chorus of the Hebrew slaves) and reaches its energetic conclusion full of gusto! This arrangement is suitable for advanced performers and can be heard on iTromboni's debut album: there goes the neighbourhood.
