(+)
Ravel, Maurice Tzigane Concert rhapsody for violin and piano In 1922 Maurice Ravel heard the young Hungarian violin virtuoso and niece of Joseph Joachim, Jelly D?Aranyi, in concert in London. Following the performance, Ravel spent the remainder of the evening requesting D?Aranyi to play numerous gypsy tunes on her violin, probing her on the technical limits of the instrument. The result of this encounter is Ravel?s virtuoso classic ?Tzigane?. Written originally for violin and piano or luthéal (a mechanism invented in 1919 that attaches to a piano, producing a sound similar to the rich overtones of the Cimbalon), the premiere took place in London in April 1924. The composer had finished the work only days beforehand. Ravel later orchestrated ?Tzigane? and both versions remain a ?must? for music-lovers and aspiring violinists today. Jelly D?Aranyi performed both versions regularly throughout her long career. This Urtext edition presents the first scholarly-critical edition of Ravel?s masterpiece. It is published both in the orchestral version, complete with full score and performance material, as well as in the composer?s earlier version for violin and piano. All known sources, including letters, have been drawn on for the new edition; one of the available sources, consulted for the first time, was a copy of ?Tzigane? from the estate of Jelly D?Aranyi, which is today part of a private collection. The version for piano and violin contains, besides the Urtext part, a second violin part as a facsimile with performance instructions by Jelly D?Aranyi. D?Aranyi?s alterations and fingering reflect how Ravel must have heard the work in rehearsals and performance and as such are a document of early 20th century performance practice. The cooperation between Ravel and D?Aranyi is comparable to that of Brahms and Joachim working on the Brahms violin concerto. - First scholarly-critical Urtext edition of the work - Presented are both versions: for violin and orchestra and for violin and piano - Includes Jelly D?Aranyi?s fingering

für Violine und Klavier. The Romances op. 22 are today among Clara Schumann?s most popular chamber music works. For violinists and pianists, they?re also of particular importance due to the wealth of information by Schumann, Joseph Joachim, and Wilhelm Joseph von Wasielewski on fingering, bowing, and phrasing in these three pieces. While working on the composition and publication of the Romances op. 22, Schumann was in close contact with these two great violinists of the nineteenth century. She consulted Wasielewski while completing an early version of Romance no. 1, while Joachim was involved in a later, complete version and the preparation of the first edition. Jacqueline Ross? scholarly-critical edition is the first to include, in addition to the first edition, the numerous manuscript sources that survive today, such as: Schumann?s draft manuscript, presentation autographs for Wasielewski and Joachim, as well as copyists? parts once owned by the two violinists. This edition has two separate parts for the violin, allowing its use in two ways: first, as a straightforward Urtext edition: and second, as an edition informed by historical performing practice, supported by the detailed Performing Practice Commentary on nineteenth-century violin and piano technique.

Par BEETHOVEN LUDWIG VAN. Beethoven’s Sonatas for Pianoforte and Violin are now available at a special set price. The set consists of volume I (BA 9014) and volume II (BA 9015). Beethoven’s ten sonatas for piano and violin, along with those by Mozart, constitute the heart of this classical music genre. Following the lead of Mozart’s late sonatas, Beethoven lets the violin part become increasingly independent from the piano part. Not only does Clive Brown’s scholarly critical edition offer a meticulously edited text but for the first time it presents a list of sources and a Critical Report. Furthermore Brown documents a great number of passages where, by today’s standards, the notation raises some questions. These passages had previously been overlooked in the autograph but their significance is now clarified. One example can be found in Beethoven’s “Tempo di Minuetto” from Sonata op. 30 No. 3, where he uses a notational idiosyncracy based on C.P.E. Bach’s “Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu spielen” to denote a rest. This musical symbol, which was included in the first edition published during Beethoven’s lifetime, has not been addressed in any modern edition to date. In addition, a score through a chord can also not be found in previous modern editions - this denotes an arpeggiated chord./ Recueil / Violon et Piano

Sonata WoO postum for Violin and Piano-Edited by Clive Brown and Neal Peres Da Costa with an Urtext solo part as well as a second part with performance markings.Johannes Brahms The Works for one Instrument and Piano:Johannes Brahms? compositions for one instrument and Piano have been standards in chamber music literature ever since their inception. These works were written with specific performers in mind and Brahms worked closely with them when refining the final texts. Nevertheless we rarely approach the music taking into consideration the possibilities of the instruments for which Brahms wrote or the performing practices of the individual playerswho first performed these compositions including Brahms himself. The New Urtext Editions:Bärenreiter?s pioneering new scholarly-critical editions of Brahms? works for one instrument and Piano are edited by a team of musicologists who are also performers. They offer today?s musicians not just a reliable musical text based on all known sources but also a comprehensive approach to the works which aims to place them in their historical context and to elucidate the complex of meanings that the composer wished his notation to convey to performers. In addition to the musical text these editions offer an informative Introduction laying out the genesis publication history and reception of the works. At the same time there is a complete list of the sources an explanation of the editorial procedures and a Critical Commentary. Also each volume contains a detailed discussion of specific performing practice issues raised by individual works. An integral part of Bärenreiter?s Brahms publication complex is a text booklet which approaches general performance practice issues of the 19th century with regard to e.g. tempo rubato rhythmic flexibility and articulation. Furthermore musicians will find valuable information concerning vibrato portamento and bowing. Last but not least characteristics of Brahms? own Piano playing as well as that of his circle and contemporaries are discussed. The Violin and Viola sonata editions come not only with an Urtext part freed from all editorial emendations but also with an

Composed in 1924 for Violin and Luthéal (A keyboard instrument which never gained much popularity) Tzigane demonstrated Ravel's ability to go beyond his natural Impressionist style and write a piece which would be much better categorized as Late Romantic. First performed with the Luthéal substituted for a Piano in 1925 today the piece is accepted as either being performed with the Piano and Violin or Orchestra and Violin Ravel himself having arranged the piece for Orchestra.

(+)
Brahms composed his ?Violin Sonata In D Minor? during the summer of 1886. The work quickly became part of the standard repertoire and has remained so until today. It is presented here in a fine Bärenreiter Urtext edition and comes with an unmarked Urtext part as well as a second part marked with fingering and bowing by Clive Brown which are based on the practices of Brahms? contemporaries. An important part of this edition is the extensive preface. Firstly it informs about the works? origins its compositional process pre-publication performances its publication history as well as early reception. Truly remarkable is theunique Performance Practice Commentary. Here the editors take the premise that already a few decades after Brahms? death a widening gulf developed between the composer?s expectations and the performance practices of the early 20th century. In a very concrete and practical way the editors summarize some of the key issues in understanding Brahms? notation with regard to rhythm and timing dynamics and accentuation dots and strokes slurring and non legato Piano pedalling and overholding Piano arpeggiation and dislocation string instrument fingering string instrument harmonics and vibrato. In this way the edition offers an exciting and often surprising insight in Romantic musical interpretation.A pioneering Urtext edition. With an unmarked Urtext part. With a second part including fingering and bowing based on the practices of Joseph Joachim and other contemporaries of Brahms. With an extensive Performance Practice Commentary. For further information on Romantic performance practice we recommend: ?Performance Practices in Johannes Brahms? Chamber Music? text booklet BA 9600.

Published in 1924 as 'revised and edited' by violinist Samuel Dushkin Maria Theresia Von Paradis' Sicilienne is the most famous of her works. Dushkin later claimed that he had discovered this piece as a keyboard work and had recast it for violin and piano but it is fairly certain that the piece was in fact composed by Dushkin. However the doubtful parentage of the piece had never dampened its popularity and it is still widely used today. Arranged for Violin or Cello with Piano accompaniment.

(+)
Of Grieg?s three Violin sonatas the great C-minor Sonata op. 45 is the best known today. And unjustly so because the two early sonatas are captivating in their joy to play and their fresh youthful tone. And what is more they can also be played by advanced students due to their somewhat lesser technical demands. Written in 1867 the G-major Violin Sonata op. 13 palpably draws on Grieg?s enthusiasm for Norwegian folk music; the lively outer movements in particular take as their model the traditional ?jumping dance.? Aside from the second print edition of 1887 revised by Grieg himself the autograph manuscript in Stockholm wasalso consulted for this edition thus offering an optimally ascertained musical text.

(+)
Mozart composed the majority of his works for solo String Instruments and Orchestra during the years 1773 to 1779. Especially important in this context are the years 1773 and 1775 which witnessed the creation of the five concertos for Violin and Orchestra as well as several single movements for the same scoring. The reasons for this flourish of activity in this domain lie partly in the fact that Mozart who still occupied the post of concertmaster to the Prince-Archbishop was either obliged or inspired to provide such works for special occasions during this long period spent in Salzburg. But another reason was certainly the possibility of experimenting withall the new compositional techniques acquired during his third trip to Italy and his stay of several months in Vienna from July to September 1773.The Piano reduction of Mozart?s G Major Violin Concerto is easier to play uncluttered and practical with page turns where you need them and where necessary fold-out pages. The solo part gives players the critical Urtext of the New Mozart Edition. The tutti passages are all presented in normal size print for players wanting to perform these sections with the first Violins. An ossia has been included in small print for the last four measures before the first solo passage to allow for the transition to the solo section.A prepared performance part is also included with bowings fingerings and performance practice comments. An additional brochure is included with todays most performed cadenzas ?Eingänge? and fermata embellishments by Eugène Ysaÿe Leopold Auer Sam Franko and Martin Wulfhorst. This collection offers players a spectrum of styles available in no other publication.Urtext of the New Mozart EditionFull score and parts (BA4865) Violin and Piano reduction (BA4865-90) and study score format 22.5 x 16.5cm (TP272) available for sale.

(+)
Henri Casadesus was passionate about early instruments, as we know from a number of photographs showing him with viola d?amore, the subject of a manual he wrote entitled Tecnique de la viole d?amour. The Concerto en Ut mineur was first published in 1947 by Mica Salabert. The first edition gives the so-called ?original? part for solo violocello together with the score which, according to the preface, has been adapted for viola or cello or violin by Casadesus. However, stylistic analysis of the piece, together with some musicological research carried out after the appearance of the first edition reveals that the ?original? version for violoncello, on which the adaptation was supposed to be based, cannot be attributed to Johann Christian Bach, but is rather a work imitating his style written two centuries later. In spite of this, Concerto en Ut mineur encountered considerable success and continues to be studied and performed by both violinists and violoncellists today.

A pioneering set of Urtext editions.String editions include an Urtext solo part and a second part with fingering as well as performance markings. Each edition offers a preface on performance practice aspects pertaining to the respective works.A separate text booklet includes pioneering texts on general issues of performance practice in the 19th century as well as on specific issues with regard to Johannes Brahms? chamber music.Bärenreiter?s pioneering new scholarly-critical editions of Brahms? works for one instrument and Piano are edited by a team of musicologists who are also performers. They offertoday?s musicians not just a reliable musical text based on all known sources but also a comprehensive approach to the works which aims to place them in their historical context and to elucidate the complex of meanings that the composer wished his notation to convey to performers. The Violin and Viola sonata editions come not only with an Urtext part freed from all editorial emendations but also with an additional part including fingering and bowing based on the practices of Joseph Joachim and his colleagues. These markings especially draw on publications of the sonatas edited by Joachim?s pupils Leopold Auer and Ossip Schnirlin as well as those by Brahms? associate Franz Kneisel. A similar approach has been used for the Violoncello sonatas drawing on performance markings by Robert Hausmann (for whom Brahms wrote the Sonata in F major) Hugo Becker with whom Brahms performed it and Julius Klengel who was also close to his circle.

Par CAMPOGRANDE NICOLA. For a long time after Romanticism had come to the fore, it was generally agreed that Brahms somehow ?did not get it?: History and Progress ? it was thought - were proceeding along one clear path and Brahms ? who was composing sonatas and symphonies instead of nocturnes and symphonic poems ? had taken the wrong way. Almost one century later, Schönberg wrote an essay, Brahms, der Fortschrittliche ( Brahms, the progressive ), in which he explained that it wasn?t like that at all. Fully assuming the risk to appear somehow irreverent, I have to confess: Over the years, I came to the conclusion that the present ? and the future ? can be created only by loving the past. As Brahms had shown us, it is only by accepting the challenge of taking our heritage into our own hands, that we can create something new. We cannot avoid engaging with the past. Therefore, starting with my Sinfonia n. 1 , I began to flirt with such a strong and effective musical structure like the sonata form. I re-read and freely transformed it, because it is a sturdy and resilient structure, but also a theatrical and colorful one. For me, it is a happy structure. And I think that today more than ever we need something like this: We need to find places ? even imaginary ones ? where we can give happiness a form of its own. Nicola Campogrande, December 2020 / Date parution : 2022-10-12/ Répertoire / Violon et Piano
