The appropriately-titled RESTLESS begins with a recitative-like Misterioso, building tension as if slowly pulling back a spring until it snaps. This recoil is supercharged, cycling through a series of dance rhythms inspired by the music of Samuel Zyman’s native Mexico. Successive episodes bring the tempo gradually faster, with restless tension between folkloric harmonies and chromatically dramatic harmony. Equally dramatic is a surprise return to the broadly declamatory music of the opening, and the gradual second series of restless song and dance. The 10-minute work was commissioned by Astral Artists’ Micro-Commissioning Program, for pianist Zhenni Li.

Ephrem Feeley’s second published collection Our Hearts Are Restless mirrors the flexibility and variety of his first, Here in Christ We Gather. The music is flexible to accompany the ritual action it accompanies, and the scoring allows for performance by cantor or choir. Above all, this is elegant liturgical music at the service of the liturgy. Ephrem’s musical style sits comfortably between classical and contemporary, allowing for immediate engagement by all.  CONTENTS: I Will Go Up to the Altar of God • A Blessing on the Young • Christ Has No Body Now but Yours • Be Near at Either Hand • God’s Love for Us • Our Hearts Are Restless, O God • Song of Farewell • Sing a New Song to the Lord • Call to Your Table • Our Eyes Are Fixed on the Lord •For You, My Soul Is Thirsting • When in Our Music God Is Glorified.

With a text based on Confessions of St. Augustine, this song of comfort extols the surety of God’s love for us. Appropriate for times of reflection or meditation, this moving work sings of the peace found when we allow our restless hearts to find a home in God. While effective with piano and choir alone, the addition of string quartet, flute, and horn in F adds depth and enhances the legato line of the melody. For cantor or soloist. Instrument parts are optional.

Puck's Game is inspired by the actions of Shakespeare's mischievous sprite, Puck, the fairly-like jester from A Midsummer Night's Dream. The music reflects Puck's playful and restless nature through leaping gestures, frolicking motives and restless rhythmical figures. While there is a moment in the work when Puck exudes a more tender side, his truly impish nature quickly returns at the conclusion of the piece.

This piece opens with three repeated notes, then a short introduction leads to a robust theme from clarinets, horns and trombones. A restless bridge passage leads to a syncopated tune from the alto saxophone and then to a third theme from a solo euphonium. A graceful second subject, initially on a solo clarinet, leads back to a recall of the introductory material before a full-scale recapitulation. An intense allargando leads to a full-band version of the second subject under a running woodwind passage, which leads to a short coda.

On the broadcast of the film From Dusk Till Dawn, the following note could be read in Gong (German radio and television programme guide) on 21 May: The gangsters Seth (George Clooney) and Richard Gecko (Quentin Tarantino) are on the run. On their way to Mexico, they take the apostate preacher Fuller and his children hostage. On their journey, they end up in Titty Twister Bar, not suspecting that it is peopled by vampires. Well, after deducting some film junk, some typical elements remain: what is past and over, constant new dramatic pair constellations, what is dead and constantly reawakening, the transformations, the troubles and destructions, the final annihilation teeming with destruction etc. Basically, it is a myth of ruin, in whose structure the elements are interchangeable. It could also be told with a coherent material concept, in a historically obsolete manner, in an old-fashioned way, with non-compensation, with flaring abolition yes, does everything always work??? It is good that it only takes place in a bar and that the bar invites us into Titty Twister in attractive neon writing. Restless nature and beauty are at home in the bar today. That facilitates for us the effortlessness of having fun in life. And today there is a special programme my piece Titty Twister for Accordion, Viola, Nepalese Singing Bowl, Pinballs and Mini Dramolettes. Its all expression, isnt it??? Nicolaus A. Gothic horror in music: This chamber choir miniature in 3/4 time, as entertaining as it is creepy, pays homage to Alban Berg's Wozzeck, which is directly quoted with the line 'Ein schoner Mord, ein guter Mord' [A beautiful murder, a good murder]. The composeradds a myriad of imaginative English text snippets on the theme of 'head off, knife out, heart beats, lights out' etc. There is vocal trembling, firing, stammering, always restless and on a knife edge - even the scratching sound of real blades is used. A virtuoso treat with which vocal ensembles in the proper mood can bring any after-programme to a crowning finale!

For unaccompanied SATB This is an appropriately aching setting of Sir Philip Sidney's poem of unending desire and longing. There are gorgeous chromatics and enharmonics and a masterful use of a triplet pattern which becomes the restless hunger driving the poem. This is a beautiful piece, and very gratifying to sing.

See the biography of Michael Karmon on the back cover.WHEN THE SHEEP WON'T COME: A SLEEPLESS NOCTURNE FOR GUITAR was composed for Joseph Hagedorn, winner of the 1990 GFA solo competition, and premiered by him in November 1999. My original idea was to write a serene and moody nocturne in several movements. However, as I began researching and listening to new guitar pieces, I came across Toru Takemitsu's All in Twilight, and it immediately made a profound impression. At the time I found it beautiful, moving, and inspiring, but I also felt I didn't have anything to add to what Takemitsu already did, and that I needed to find a new concept for my piece. So, I decided to view night as a potentially restless time, rather than a serene time, and portray states of mind one might go through during a sleepless night. The names of the movements evoke, at least in my mind, the moods I am to depict, and the piece becomes progressively more convoluted as it goes on. By the end, the music is a surreal and weary shadow of the opening.
