For several years, Tio, The Little Keyboard Man , has been looking over the shoulders of younger and older piano beginners as hero and helper. Used to complement schoolwork, the little Tio pieces help to recreate and deepen what has been learned in other contexts. Whether now as a single player or paired as a duet, whether relaxed at Christmas or bold in an expanded tonal space - Tio is always on the spot and has packed the appropriate music. After five volumes, a sixth and final volume will complete the piano series. A Goodbye Song For the sixth and closing volume of her Tio series, the piano pedagogue and artist Kerstin Strecke has compiled a selection of German and European children's songs. Presented primarily as supplementary literature from the first piano lesson, the volume even includes several pieces in two levels of difficulty and for four-hand playing. Song texts are given in German or in their original language and freely translated into German. A table of contents of the songs, in English, can be found at the end of the volume, lovingly illustrated by the author herself. Small, interspersed additional assignments also support a first understanding of music theory in the young keyboard artists.

Jean Sibelius's Six Songs for Male Choir Op. 18 are published as Urtext with the original Finnish lyrics for the first time in this edition. Most of these stem from the Finnish national epics Kalevala and Kanteletar, but the texts of Sydameni laulu [Song of My Heart] and Metsamiehen laulu [Song of the Woodmen] are from the poet Aleksis Kivi. The individual pieces originated over a couple of years for different choirs and occasions and were only later combined by Sibelius under a common Opus number. Venematka [Boat Trip] originated as early as 1893, Saarellaa palaa [Fire on the Island] was first performed in 1895 and Sortunut aani [The Broken Voice] in 1899. Sydameni laulu was published in the same year together with Metsamiehen laulu, while Terve kuu [Greetings to the Moon] was not composed by Sibelius until 1901. The contents of the collection Op. 18 were subsequently extended, revised and repositioned by Sibelius many times; the final shape with six settings was established in 1930. Four of these settings were also arranged for mixed choir and have already been published as an Urtext edition (ChB 5372). The edition includes translations of the lyrics in German and English as well as an informative preface that is based on volume VII/2 of the complete edition Jean Sibelius Works, just like the score.

Finn McCool (Fionn mac Cumhaill) was a mythical Irish giant. There are many stories associated with Finn, including the legend that he built the Giant's Causeway in the north of Ireland as stepping-stones to Scotland. Finn McCool starts as a funky Irish jig with an infectious groove and a call and response structure. This develops into a section with a melody reminiscent of an Irish air. Finally, these two melodies are played together and the music builds to a final flourish.

Commissioned by the first Sibelius Conductor's Competition held in Helsinki in May 1995, as an obligatory piece to be rehearsed by all the competitors, Arena was performed in its totality at the annual Avanti! Chamber Orchestra's festival in Porvoo (Finland). Thematic thinking has never been a main feature in Lindberg's music, but here horizontal lines (one would not yet dare to call them melodies) gain some independence, for example in ornamental figures and in the intense cello solo around the middle of the piece. Arena also reveals some clearly new material - Lindberg has talked about Beethoven-like formal thinking, referring to a passage where the sense of movement seems to accelerate to an extreme so that finally one perceives only a motionless surface. Another new element - which was already used to some extent at the warmly hovering ending of Aura - is the almost romantic sound world and the suspension of the harmonies in the final climax, which can make one think of Mahler and Berg, or Lindberg's grand predecessor and compatriot, Sibelius. This is the Score, published by Chester Music; the duration of the pieces is approximately 16 minutes.

âLösche die Lampe getrost, hülle in Frieden dich einâ (âPut out thy lamp with good heart, lay thee then peacefully downâ) â Johannes Brahmsâs final cycle of secular songs for mixed choir a cappella paints a striking picture of mortality, ultimate happiness and lost youth. The 4- to 6-part songs fascinate with their immense power and range of expression, which runs from short, quiet, melancholy phrases (âbreathe tremblingly forthâ, âO lifeless fallethâ) to elements of folk song (the horn calls in Nightwatch II) to mighty climaxes and double-choir effects produced with great economy of means. The closing movement In Autumn, with its idiosyncratic harmonies, is certainly one of Brahmsâs best secular compositions. All the songs are also available separately and as digital editions. The accompanying English text is the translation authorized by the composer himself.

Predominantly hushed and serene, Plainsongs for Peace and Light proved to be Jonathan Harvey's final work. It sees Harvey reexamining the very fundamentals of his craft, superimposing lines of plainsong, relishing the simple clash of note against note, and creating rich, otherworldly sonorities through an elaborate use of canon. Harvey was a composer who always embraced and sought out the very latest in musical technologies but the simplicity of the a cappella choir became something of a constant to which he returned throughout his life. The piece is for mixed voices of SATB in 16 parts.

It was commissioned by the St. Matthews Chamber Orchestra, and recorded by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with the Soweto Gospel Choir. New York Concert Review wrote of the Carnegie Hall premiere “The audience reacted after the final notes with the loudest and longest standing ovation I have ever heard at any concertâ€, while The York Press wrote “We Overcome The Wind was an outpouring of joy; a unanimous standing ovation evinced the sense of togetherness at the heart of this concert.â€.

Fanfares and Love Songs is traditional in structure; an exciting fanfare opening is followed by an expressive love song. The final movement revisits the fanfares of the first movement whilst a fast paced dance brings the work to a triumphant and breathless close. Fanfares and Love Songs was commissioned by the National Children's Band of Great Britain for their 2009 Summer Course, who gave the premiere of the opening fanfare at their closing concert. The work was premiered in its entirety by the Leyland Band, conducted by Jason Katsikaris, at the RNCM Festival of Brass on 23rd January 2010.
