Tango Tzigane - Jealousy-Tango Jalousie (Tango Tzigane - Jealousy) - Jacob Gade's classic arranged for Piano Duet (four hands) by conductor Esther Bobrova Lange. From the Preface: It is a common misconception that Tango Jalousie (Tango Tzigane) was written for the movie ”Don Q”. The piece was also played at the movie premiere in Paladsteatret on September 14th 1925 but there was no jealousy-based drama in the movie. Nonetheless the melody was well suited to the Zorro legend in a Mexican setting. But in the book “Jacob Gade – et eventyr i musik” (a fairytale in music) by Jørgen GramChristensen one learns that in a 1956 interview Jacob Gade recounted the incident in 1925 which concerned him very much: “One day the magazines featured a dramatic description of a jealousy-based murder and the word “jealousy” stood for me as a title with which the music became more and more attached.”There are many different arrangements of “Tango Jalousie” but I have always found that there was a need for a piano four hands version of this wonderful piece. In the process of working out a piano four hands version I used the full orchestra score and made sure that the most essential orchestra parts were included. Also the melody parts and accompaniment are equally distributed between the primo and secondo parts. (Esther Bobrova Lange)

Written in G major, a variety of articulations are used, including legato, staccato, and several tenutos. There are many repeated patterns that trade back and forth between primo and secondo, and a wide range of dynamics creates a thrilling performance. Upon entering a painting was written in 2008/09 and it was commissioned with funding from the Britten-Pears Foundation and the RVW Trust by Piano 4 Hands (Joseph Tong and Waka Hasegawa) to whom it is dedicated. The inspiration of the piece was the kind of painting which as you gaze at it seems to draw the onlooker into the frame indeed into the very paint itself. The specific trigger for the idea of the piece was the Rothko Exhibition at Tate Modern in 2008 Rothko has long been a favourite painter of mine even though his creative world is very different from my own. However there were one or two paintings in the exhibition in which I felt strongly this sense of beingdrawn into the inner life of the painting especially when I was able to incur the wrath of the curators and step close to the paintings and examine the surface in detail. The opening and closing sections of the piece with their gradual thickening of the harmonies and (at the end) equally gradual thinning reflect this sense of stepping forward into and backward out of the works. The inner life of the faster sections while apparently very un-Rothko-like reflects the extraordinary teeming inner life of the brush-strokes.

This early-intermediate duet is a joyful dance that students will love. The melody and harmony are traded back and forth between partners, and varied articulations help identify the location of the melody. Written in A minor and 4/4 meter, there are a few accidentals, and several hand position changes. A D. S. al Coda lets the performers play the exciting middle section one more time. / Piano 4 Mains

The Serenade for Strings dedicated to Frederick Delius on the occasion of his 60th Birthday was an acknowledgement of the debt Warlock owed to the older composer and the culmination of almost 12 years of friendship. This is a wonderful piece full of Warlock’s characteristic subtle harmonic changes and it has been effectively transcribed for Piano Duet by Fred Tomlinson of the Peter Warlock Society. There are comprehensive background notes in an extensive introduction. Note that two copies of this book are required to perform this work.
