Rush Hour est une commande de l'Association Suisse des Brass Bands (SBBV) à l'occasion du 38e Concours National de Suisse des Brass Bands 2012 (Montreux SBBW) et constitue l'oeuvre imposée de la catégorie Excellence. Construite en trois parties qui s'enchaînent l?oeuvre débute par un climat lourd et chargé parfois même bruyant. Après une petite trêve un tempo rapide s'installe la musique se veut stressante insistante en constant rebondissement. La tension accumulée aboutit sur un mouvement plus lent ou divers solistes sont mis en valeur. Quelques pointes d'humour viennent s'opposer à un choral imposant puissant et dramatique. La fin de cette partie estplus lumineuse et plus calme. Cette atmosphère est vite remplacée par un retour au matériel thématique du premier mouvement une musique oppressante se développe. La pièce se conclue par un dernier tutti extatique qui réutilise les harmonies de l'introduction dans une sorte de dernière bourrasque.Rush Hour essaie d'exprimer les divers sentiments que l'on peut éprouver lorsque l'on se trouve dans différentes situations de stress au coeur même de ' l'heure de pointe '.

Principe:Les cath?drales excitent l?imagination : pendant des centaines d?ann?es des hommes se sont donn? toutes les peines du monde pour achever ces ?difices et ceux-ci restent aujourd?hui les t?moins imposants de l?architecture et de l?histoire. La cath?drale repr?sentait par cons?quent une excellente source d?inspiration pour composer une ?uvre pleine d?effets acoustiques d??cho de m?lodies gr?goriennes et de th?mes d?orgue choraux.L??uvre ouvre sur un motif ? cinq tons en double slap qui r?sonne ? travers l?espace comme par un effet d??cho. Ensuite retentit l?antienne gr?gorienne ? Salve Regina ? jou?e ? l?euphonium combin?e peu apr?s avec lemotif d?ouverture. Le passage rapide qui suit est enti?rement bas? sur les intervalles de ce motif qui est ? pr?sent rythmiquement vari? et incorpor? sous des formes diverses (notamment en tant que th?me de fugue). L??uvre s??l?ve vers un premier moment fort qui laisse entendre de myst?rieux sons ?touff?s qui ?voquent une atmosph?re mystique et myst?rieuse.Petit ? petit appara?t un nombre toujours croissant d?extraits m?lodiques de l?antienne gr?gorienne jusqu?? ce que ce th?me comme une orgue surgisse de la masse sonore comme un grandiose th?me choral. L?ensemble rev?t un son de plus en plus puissant et brillant jusqu?? ce que tout cela aboutisse ? un final court mais ?clatant dans lequel se trouvent r?unis tous les ?l?ments de l??uvre.Remarques pour l?ex?cution:Dans la premi?re partie c?est l?effet acoustique d?une cath?drale qui est imit? c?est-?-dire que les r?ponses du motif ? cinq tons qui arrivent une fraction plus tard s?att?nuent sur leur fin (dim.) comme le ferait l??cho dans une cath?drale. Les r?ponses devraient elles aussi ?tre jou?es ? chaque fois un soup?on moins fort afin d?obtenir un effet d??cho optimal.Le rapport de tempo entre la mesure 1 et la mesure 32 est de 3/2. The word ‘tsunami’ is of Japanese origin. When you look it up in a dictionary you will find that it means ‘a great sea wave produced by submarine earth movement or volcanic eruption’. A megatsunami is the superlative of this awesome expressionof power that nature can create and has catastrophic consequences. When Carl Wittrock completed this composition not many such big earth movements had occurred but since then we have become all too familiar with the disastrousconsequences which a tsunami may have. On the 26th of December 2004 a heavy seaquake took place near the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Tidal waves 10 meters in height ravaged the coastal regions of many countries for miles around. The tsunamitook the lives of thousands of people and destroyed many villages and towns. There are more areas which run the risk of being struck by a tsunami such as the island of La Palma one of the Canary Islands. This island is based on oceaniccrust at a fracture zone and as such is one of nature’s time bombs. The consequences of a natural calamity like a megatsunami are immense. In the case of La Palma the tidal wave will move in the direction of South America where it may reach 50km inland destroying everything on its way. In his composition Wittrock describes an ordinary day which will have an unexpected ending. Right from the beginning there seems to be something in the air the music creating an oppressiveatmosphere of impending disaster. Themes are interrupted broken off suddenly followed by silence suggesting the calm before the storm. Suddenly a short climax (glissandi in the trombone part) indicates the seaquake and the megatsunami isa fact. Hereafter follows a turbulent passage symbolising the huge rolling waves. After nature’s force has spent itself resignation sets in and the composition ends with a majestic ode to nature.

Jamaica is an island in the Caribbean. In 1494 it was discovered by Christopher Columbus who used it as private property until 1509. After some skirmishes it fell under British rule and the sugar trade on the island flourished. After the abolition of slavery in 1834 it was only granted Home Rule in 1944 but it remained a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations. Whereas the export of cane sugar used to be Jamaica’s main export product for many years nowadays music has taken over this role. At first American music used to be very popular on the island. Later however Jamaican musicians started to experiment and thus in the end created their ownmusical style called Reggae. Well-known Reggae musicians are Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. The most important instruments used in Reggae are the bass and the drums. Together they form the base for the style: the riddim. A bass drum accent on the second and fourth beat are characteristic of a typically reggae drum beat. To this syncopic patterns are often added. The rhythm guitarist plays chords in a characteristic Reggae rhythm not on but between the beats.

‘Music’ by John Miles was one of Blackstone’s favourite numbers. With completely different notes but holding on to the same form and atmosphere the latter has tried to write an attractive composition for both young and old.Gate 11 refers to the ever agitated and noisy scenes at an airport especially during check-in. Yet there are also passengers who wait patiently letting their thoughts range at will looking forward to meeting a loved one at the end of their journey.

Cathedrals have always appealed to the imagination. Hundreds of years of manpower have been invested in their building and it is not for nothing that today they represent imposing symbols of architecture and history. The cathedral is also a great source of inspiration for compositions drawing on a full palette of acoustic echo effects Gregorian melodies and organ based choral themes.The work ?Catedrals? opens with a five tone motif using double tonguing which resonates through space. Then comes a Gregorian antiphonal theme ?Salve Regina? which is heard in the euphonium and later combines with the opening motif. The quicker passage that follows is basedentirely on the intervals in the motif which by now has added rhythmic variations and develops in different forms including a fugue. The work then builds towards its first climax from which unusual muted sounds emerge creating an atmosphere shrouded in mystery.Gradually more melodious fragments are added to the Gregorian antiphonal theme which develops into an expansive choral emulating the organ and which rises above the sound mass. The work grows more powerful and brilliant in sound until it culminates in a short and explosive finale wherein elements from the whole work come together.

The composition the Lonesome Knight was based on a fairytale. The piece was written by Saskia Apon for the National Brass Band Championships 2001. Once upon a time there was a knight who went to fight and defeat the dragon that had beenkilling the people of his town. There is a short but intense battle between the two and the knight is triumphant. However whilst persuing the dragon the knight has travelled far away from his home and now is lost. He roames around trying to findhis way home but exhausted and weary he falls to the ground. He awakens startled by a Giant and a group of Goblins who are celebrating the death of the dragon. The knight joins in the festivities but after a long evening is once more leftalone. The sun rises the following morning and he sees a castle on the horizon. He enthousiastcally ventures towards the castle in the hope of meeting other people. However he becomes greatly disillusioned when there is none to be found. Inhis desperation the knight climbs the tower ready to jump off. Suddenly he hears a heavenly voice. Right before him is the most beautiful princess he has ever seen. She graciously thanks him for killing the dragon a spark ingnites between themand they build a life together and.... live happily ever after! Saskia Apon studied harp at Rotterdam School of music. With this instrument she rounded of her studies by passing with credit however it was her love of composition thatremained her focus. Self-taught she began composing at the age of nine. Since then she has written pieces for The Dutch Brass Quintet The Dutch Brass Ensemble The Rotterdam Trombone Quartet and the brass band quintet Brass Ability. Atpresent she is the in-house arranger for The Rotterdam Philarmonic Brass Ensemble. Besides the customary attention for the real splashworks she endeavours to add value to the melodic function of the brass wind instruments in her music. The attacks in Brussels on 22 March 2016 created a shockwave throughout Belgium and the rest of the world. Equally the attacks in Paris and Nice led to great public indignation fear and disbelief.What has happened to the western world? Have our cultures grown apart to such an extent that we do not understand each other anymore? Bert Appermont’s intention was to voice certain emotions that these acts of terror have caused: particularly fear grief anger and helplessness. He uses the French children’s song Au Claire de la Lune as a connecting thread throughout the work.This piece is also about hope and faith in another world andis meant to pay homage to all victims resulting in a dignified remembrance. The musical development is presented in four through-composed parts titled Innocence  In Cold Blood  In Memoriam – We Shall Rise Again and A New Day.This work was commissioned by the Brassband Oberösterreich (Brass Band Upper Austria) to be played at the European Brass Band Championships 2017.

Durkle Bandrydge is the name of the composers imaginary world but it could very well be anyones invisible dream world with a different name. In this very versatile suite by Bruce Fraser 8 characters are featured each with its ownpeculiarities making Durkle Bandrydge such a colourful place. Do these characters differ that much from us? That is for you to find out! In the last part all characters come together in a special way.Durkle Bandrydge exists at the end ofyour street. It is invisible to humans but Durkle Bandrygators can watch us with great interest. The music will introduce you to some of the characters who live in this unusual place. The parts: Somnanbulyss who is a giant trollguarding the entrance to Durkle Bandryde. At least he is supposed to but he tends to sleep most of the time. His music is therefore very slow moving and sleepy. Long Gwysteen is a tall mysterious and somehow sophisticated character who walls around with a shell on his back. His music glides along rather gracefully. Squelfitch is a rather unpleasant and smelly character who lives in a bog which is why his music sounds rather slimy and a bit like trying to walkthrough quicksand. Perfydlia is a meddling old woman who gossips about everybody and squeals with sudden delight at the small exciting bits of tittletattle about others in the village. In the music you can hear her sudden little squealsof delight. Maryann Lovely is a beautiful young lady graceful gorgeous absolutely devine and her music is obviously just the same. Thistledoo Nicely is a lively character who spends and spends and spends with her credit card buying the latest fashion and never worries about having to pay the bills. Her music reflects her excitement when shopping and het ‘happy go lucky’ approach to life. Marsyn Edginton is the Lord of the manor the richest man in town the‘big cheese’ the man with all the power and of course the biggest house. He is very grand and his music like he could be a king. Jimmy McScotsmyn is a red haired scotsman wearing tartan cap. He misses his home country terribly and eatslots of shortbread oatcakes scotch eggs porridge and drinks an enormous amount of Scotch Wisky which helps him to have fond memories of the kind of music he would like to dance to when he was a younger man. His favourite dance is a Jig andthis is the music he remembers. Grand March of the Durkle Bandrydgators. We hope that you have enjoyed meeting these characters from Drukle Bandrydge and would invite you to listen to all the villagers now march along in a grand parade -it is a pity that you can not see them what is a wonderful sight.
