Fantasy for Marimba was commissioned by the outstanding Japanese marimba player, Fumito Nunoya. Although it is written in concerto style, the piano not only accompanies the solo marimba but also plays an important part in the development of the work. The piece is written in four movements, played without a break: Allegro, Andante misterioso, Tempo rubato and Allegro energico. Also available for Marimbaphone and Piano.

In Fantasy for Marimba neemt de marimbafoon als solo-instrument een centrale plaats in, maar ook de piano speelt een belangrijke rol. Het werk bestaat uit vier samenhangende delen: een Allegro, een Andante misterioso, een Tempo rubato en tot slot als hartstochtelijke finale een Allegro energico. In Fantasy for Marimba wird das Marimbaphon als Soloinstrument gewürdigt, aber auch das Blasorchester spielt eine wichtige Rolle. Das Werk besteht aus vier zusammenhängenden Sätzen: Es beginnt mit einem Allegro, in dem Marimbaphon und Orchester zwei Themen präsentieren, die im darauff olgenden Andante misterioso weiterentwickelt werden. Im dritten Satz, der mit Tempo rubato überschrieben ist, hat das Blasorchester eine Atempause“, während das Marimbaphon ein kadenzartiges Solo vorträgt. Der letzte Satz, ein Allegro energico, führt das Werk mit leidenschaftlicher Intensität zu einem großen Finale.

Bien que la structure de cette fantaisie s’apparente celle d’un concerto, le pianiste n’est absolument pas réduit un rôle d’accompagnateur, mais participe pleinement au développement de l’œuvre. A dynamic concert overture that derives most of its force and material from the striking fanfare motive announced in the opening measure by horns and trumpets (concert Eb, Bb, Ab, Db). The bold opening in compound time is followed by a suave and flowing Adagio in 4/4 meter that makes a lovely tune out of a variant of the opening motive. At measure 103, with a marimba solo, the Allegro style and compound meter return for a rousing and invigorating climax. Cosmic Expedition takes performers on a musical journey far across the galaxy via three main sections.  This fanfare composition would be perfect for opening a concert. It has bold brass fanfare figures over textural woodwinds to start and then takes the listener on a sonic journey through a variation of harmonic colors, tambural and textural shifts.
Cosmic Expedition takes performers on a musical journey far across the galaxy via three main sections. The first, a rather celebratory and triumphant fanfare in Bb major begins with the upper woodwinds and percussion creating a sound-screen, that is a busy texture consisting of a flurry of repeated notes over which the horns and alto saxophones present the opening theme. The sound-screen should be carefully balanced and give way to the melody at m. 5, which should be played extremely marcato. The timpani solo beginning in m. 11 must not be understated. A brief percussion interlude separates a restatement of the opening theme, this time with the addition of the trumpet, tenor saxophone, and euphonium, and a counter melody by the low winds. The percussion interlude is playful, light, but full of vigor and energy. An Ab in the low winds pulls the harmony towards G minor in m. 40 to start the second section, a more serious fanfare. Here, the marimba repeats an ostinato that is complemented by the bass drum and woodblock. The upper woodwinds with the xylophone and snare drum dance over the stern secondary fanfare. A longing call lead by the trombones, interrupted by a subtle snare drum beckons to the clarinets and horn who begin the third section of the piece at m. 68. This haunting melody in C minor is legato, and starkly contrasts all which came before it. A relentless concert tom-tom played with hard mallets keeps the momentum persistent, and a heartbeat-like pulse is felt from the tuba and baritone saxophone. The melody rises towards m. 84 when the brass harken back to the fanfare style before fading back into another lush woodwind strain.A recapitulation of the low winds’ call is heard at m. 100 which in this occasion intensifies into an emphatic statement by the battery percussion instruments. Now in Eb major, the opening fanfare theme is heard again once more before fading into the beginning of the piece’s conclusion.To end, the counter melody from the opening section duels with chromatic tension above before swelling to an arrival in the original key of Bb major. The full ensemble celebrates the piece’s resolution, and after a few crunchy power chords the journey is completed.

Alcazar is a concert band work commissioned by the Cortland High School Concert Band, Richard B. Eleck, conductor, of the Cortland Enlarged City School District, Cortland, N.Y.  Premiered on June 1, 2017, Alcazar is a dynamic piece with a definite Spanish flair.  Using changing meters and syncopated rhythms in its Allegro introduction, the piece continues this vitality into its main theme alternating between 4/4 and 6/8 time signatures.  This opening theme then moves to a secondary theme largely in 5/4, first presented in the woodwinds, followed by a tutti section finishing with a punctuated conclusion to this Allegro.  The clarinets then take us into a melodic Andante middle section, using quarter-note triplets as its rhythmic motive. As this builds to a climax, we are moved into a return to the 5/4 Allegro heard earlier in the piece. As it seems to come to an end, a sudden use of the alternating 4/4, 6/8 earlier motive returns and takes us through an extended ending with a dynamic conclusion. Alcazar should prove to be a favorite of your student musicians as well as your audiences. This is the perfect vehicle for concert and contest performance.

Encourage the ensemble to play with a unified articulation style, maintain a proper balance, and establish a consistent tempo through this section as several recurring rhythms must be performed consistently. Measure 38 features a trumpet solo, so be sure that the rest of the ensemble balances their line to support the solo instrument. In the section that begins at m. 67, there is an optional solo opportunity for trumpet and trombone. Both of these sections provide nice contrast against the full ensemble sections that are present in the work. The section at m. 81 includes a call-and-response section between woodwind, brass and percussion groups. Be sure that as groups enter, the tempo remains consistent and that the winds articulation style is unified and complimentary to the percussion. As the opening fanfare returns at m. 101, remind the ensemble to play with consistent style, balance and tempo as they did in the opening. As the ensemble begins the part of the journey with Apollo at m. 110, the music contains unique layers that must work together to be effective and set up the material that begins at m. 127. Encourage the group to play so they can hear all other lines, and allow their energy to grow into a focused musical celebration by the final note. Concert Piece No. 5 (also known as Concert Sketch No. 5) was composed in 1938 and is the only one of five of these works that are known. After this work, the composer apparently composed his 13 concertos for the Trombone.
This work is very popular for high school level performers and this premier arrangement by Benjamin Coy will allow Trombone soloists to perform the work with a large ensemble.
The music is in a Russian sounding romantic style and about 7 minutes in length, appropriate for moderately advanced performers.

Imagine Bach trying to compose in his studio while being pestered by a spider! Arachnophobia and Fugue exposes students to the Baroque style of music using dramatic contrasts, light articulation, chorale-style sections, and multiple references to Bach's works. The spider is represented by the xylophone and/or marimba supported by the flutes. As a humorous bonus, auxiliary percussion includes rolled-up newspapers to swat the pesky spider throughout the piece.
Good music played well inspires the imagination. Imagine Bach trying to compose in his studio while being pestered by a spider! First and foremost this is educational music exposing kids to the Baroque style of music. Dramatic dynamic contrasts, light articulation, chorale-style, and multiple references to Bach’s works form the basis for the work. Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, Sleepers Wake, Little Fugue in G Minor, Sheep May Safely Graze, Dies Irae, and Come Sweet Death are the basis for this look into an imaginary situation with the Great Baroque Master. The spider is represented by either a solo xylophone or multiple xylophones and/or marimba (supported by the flutes.) As a humorous bonus auxiliary percussion use rolled up newspapers to swat the pesky spider throughout the piece in rhythm with the music.
