The large and technically demanding G major Sonata was composed two years before Schubert?s death in October 1826 and is one of only three piano sonatas that appeared in print during his lifetime. The unusual title of the first edition ?Fantasie, Andante, Menuetto und Allegretto? stems from the publisher Haslinger and is probably due to the dreamy-melancholy underlying mood of the first movement which corresponded little to the traditional concepts of a sonata?s first movement. It is hardly surprising that the ?Fantasy-Sonata?, as it is often still called today, later inspired artists such as Franz Liszt and Robert Schumann with its free and romantic nature, who described it as being consummate ?in form and spirit?. For the present Urtext edition a thorough re-examination of all known sources was undertaken, including the autograph in the British Library, and the edition now presents itself with the usual crystal clear Henle music engraving. The preface by Schubert expert Andrea Lindmayr-Brandl and the detailed commentary section provide comprehensive information about the genesis of the work, the sources and their readings. A further highlight are the fingerings by pianist Martin Helmchen.

Franz Schubert's Impromptus Op. 90 (D 899) are among the most frequently played of his piano works and have become well-established in music lessons and in the concert repertoire. This Wiener Urtext Edition presents a new edition based on the latest research and performance practice. In this edition, numerous details have been added to the text and fundamental problems like the distinction between accents and crescendo hairpins or the adjustment of dotted rhythms to triplets are solved in a new and undogmatic way, closely following Schubert's original manuscript. Also new are the notes on interpretation by Robert D. Levin which look into even the most subtle shades of meaning of expression markings. Robert Schumann's 'Album for the Young' is one of the milestones of educationally inspired Piano literature. This edition does not focus on systematic technical studies but on the development of the player's musical performance as well as on the realisation of musical associations. In this progressively structured work the pieces 'Für Kleinere' [For the Younger Ones] are followed by a second section 'Für Erwachsenere' [For the More Grown-Ups] which both technically and intellectually leaves the world of the childlike behind again and again (e.g. Mignon). This in particular provides a great set of repertoire for adults who wantto resume Piano playing which gives extra relavence to Schumann's opus. The appendix of the revised new edition of the Wiener Urtext Edition also contains pieces originally intended for the album which ultimately were not included in the printed collection. The music section is complemented by the composer's 'Musikalische Haus- und Lebensregeln' which had already been integrated in the first reprints including their original translations into English and French the latter of which was written by none other than Franz Liszt.

Complementing the Impromptus and Moments musicaux, the Wiener Urtext Edition also presents a new edition of the three late piano pieces D 946. Careful study of Schubert's autographs has led to various retouchings in the musical text, in D 946/2 for instance to the supplementation of a bar. The edition offers a new approach to the issue of the second episode of D 946/1, deleted by Schubert in the autograph, but included in the posthumous first edition and meanwhile embraced in modern concert practice. The separate edition of these repertoire pieces that have enjoyed increasing popularity since the 1970s has been expanded to include the two piano piano pieces D 916B/C that have survived as fragments and have been completed by Robert D. Levin in close observance of Schubert's compositional principles. Like the three piano pieces D 946, both works originate from the context of the Impromptus and have survived in the composer's autograph sketches. Their inclusion in this volume completes the picture of Schubert's late keyboard output and provides new impulses for the pianistic concert repertoire. / Piano

In autumn 1827 Schubert composed eight 'Impromptus' for publication as a complete collection by Haslinger in Vienna. When the plan fell through Schubert offered his 'Impromptus' to Schott as pieces which 'could be issued individually or all four together'. The name of the works probably originated from the publisher Haslinger and Schubert also used it for his collection published later as op. posth. 142. The lyrical-romantic works are suitable for advanced piano students and have the character of sonata movements. Robert Schumann who regarded them as parts of a four-movement sonata drew attention to the second collection published by Diabelli in 1839 in hisreview.For the first time this scholarly-critical Urtext edition presents the musical text of the 'New Schubert Edition' in new engraving and with optimum page-turns. When Christa Landon presented the first printed version of her edition of Joseph Haydn's Piano sonatas Haydn's sonata oeuvre was still overshadowed by the works of Mozart and Beethoven. Since then Haydn's sonatas have progressed from the teaching rooms to the concert halls and Landon's edition has played a crucial role in that process. Since the Haydn anniversary in 2009 this 'legendary' edition has been thoroughly revised for over the course of more than forty years new sources have come to light. Questions of authenticity have also been resolved not least because the editorial principles for 18th-century music havechanged considerably. The new edition is published in four volumes the content of each volume being compatible with the volumes of the previous edition. Volume 3 of the new edition comprises the 17 sonatas Hob. XVI:21–32 and Hob. XVI:35–39 contained in Vol. 2 of the previous Wiener Urtext edition including popular works for music lessons such as Hob. XVI:27 35 and 37. In the Notes on Interpretation Robert D. Levin explains important aspects of Haydn's performance practice and with the help of numerous examples shows possibilities to embellish the pauses frequently used by Haydn.

Composed during 1836-38 this work is dedicated to Franz Liszt who in turn dedicated his B minor Sonata to Schumann. It reflects Schumann's despair over his thwarted love affair with Clara Wieck.
