Composer and violinist János Lavotta (1764-1820), as a member - together with János Bihari and Antal Csermák - of the ''virtuoso trio'' who played a great role in the history of Hungarian music, was one of the pioneers of verbunkos music. Although his violin duos op. 49 must have also been used for playing music at home, they show the composer's clear educational intent, since the fourteen consecutive pieces represent a gradually increasing difficulty in both technical and musical respects. The relatively short and undemanding melodies, which can be grasped by beginners, the sequence-like structure that makes practising individual technical elements possible, the rhythmical-harmonic accompanying forms, as well as the temperately applied modulations are definitely suitable for beginner violinists to achieve significant progress in playing. According to music historian Mária Domokos, Lavotta's duos could have been included in the syllabus of any contemporary music school at the time. The first publication of Easy Duos - which came out on the 250th anniversary of the Lavotta's birth - was edited by János Dombóvári who provided the fingering and the necessary instructions for performance. / Piano

Edward Elgar's Salut d'amour is one of those pieces by the British composer that has a particularly haunting melody. Composed in 1888 for his future wife Caroline Alice Roberts, the work became an enormous success early on. Notes in the surviving autographs for the versions for Violin and Piano (HN 1188), Violoncello and Piano (HN 1189) and Piano solo show that Elgar had intended making arrangements for numerous scorings - but only the three named versions were authorised through original manuscripts. Amongst these the piano version has a special signifi cance: Caroline Alice Roberts was a piano pupil of Elgar's and thus the composer might have rewritten the original for violin and piano for his fiancée and later wife. Alongside the first print, we have also evaluated Elgar's autograph engraver's copy for the first time. / Piano

Sir Edward Elgar was an English composer, many of whose works have entered the British and international classical concert repertoire. Among his best-known compositions are orchestral works including the Enigma Variations, the Pomp and Circumstance Marches, concertos for Violin and Cello, and two symphonies. He was appointed Master of the King's Musick in 1924.Composed in 1892, Etudes Caracteristiques For Violin Op.24 is dedicated to the preeminent Hungarian Jewish Violin virtuoso, and Elgar's former Violin teacher between 1877-1878, Adolphe Pollitzer. Pollitzer believed that, as a violinist, Elgar had the potential to be one of the leading soloists in the country, but Elgar himself, having heard leading virtuosi at London concerts, felt his own Violin playing lacked a full enough tone, and he abandoned his ambitions to be a soloist. / Piano
