Concerto for flute and orchestra. Study score edition. First performed at the Flanders Festival in Brussels 12th October 2001. Composer's Notes: I have been very familiar with the flute since my earliest pieces. I like the sound in which breathing is ever present and with timbral possibilities that befit my musical language: the instrument's body makes it possible to write phrases that go through grinding textures coloured with phonemes whispered by the flutist which gradually go towards pure and smooth sounds. Kaija Saariaho Duration 18 minutes. Solo part is also available on sale. Conductor's score and orchestral parts are available on hire only.

Three Imaginary Folksongs was requested by the Concerts Society of Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral for their concert season celebrating the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Cathedral. The composer was asked specifically for a work which would highlight the much-admired talents of the principal clarinet, Jacqueline Thomas. The title is unambiguous. Taking three different approaches, each of which has a modal starting point, the three ‘folksongs’ from imaginary places, were developed in styles which reflect the work of earlier folksong-inspired composers. The first performance took place at Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral at a concert that not only celebrated the Cathedral’s 50th birthday, but also Stephen’s 70th.

“Composed in 1978 by Henri Dutilleux, Timbres, Space, Movement is a work for Orchestra, also named ?The starry night? after a painting by Van Gogh. It was commisioned by Mstislav Rostropovich for the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington and is dedicated to Charles Münch. This great orchestral work lasts approximately 20 minutes and depicts the content of the painting. It is written for a full orchestra without Violins or Violas. A sketch of the placement of the instruments is given in the book as its disposition differs from a full orchestra: The Cellos placed in a half-circle in front of the conductor. The Cellos represents the space with twirling solos and more stagnant sections while the lack of Violins and Violas is for the quiet and motionless part of the painting. The solo of the Winds and Drums characterizes the clouds and the light of the moon and the stars. It is divided in two parts: 1. Nébuleuse (Nebula) and 2.Constellations, which are divided by a Cello interlude. Henri Dutilleux was internationally acclaimed for his work winning prizes such as the Gold Medal of the Royal Philharmonic Society and the UNESCO's International Rostrum of Composers, amongst many others. His work also includes a Piano sonata, two symphonies, the Violin concerto 'L'arbre des songes' (The tree of dreams) and the Cello concerto 'Tout un monde lointain' (A whole distant word).â€.

Moeran based Lonely Waters on the fragment of a song from the Broads of East Norfolk. This flowing, atmospheric work is dedicated to Ralph Vaughn Williams, and recalls Moeran's Norfolk boyhood and the folksongs he collected from East Anglia.E J Moeran was a 20th century British composer of Anglo-Irish background who spent his early years in Norfolk. Influences of folksong and programmatic elements can be easily heard in this composer's main body of work. Moeran tended toward the smaller ensembles in his composition which gave an appropriate frame for his great lyric gifts.
