for SATB double choir unaccompanied A setting of Shakespeare's much-loved Sonnet 18, Bednall's expressive work highlights this timeless text with sumptuous harmony, including pleasing tonal shifts and topical false relations. Various choral textures are explored, from the imitative lines of 'Sometime too hot', to the warm richness of the closing pages, where the choir divides into eight parts. This work is part of the New Horizons series and a piano reduction is included for rehearsal purposes.

Adaptation of the motet Tristis est anima mea, attributed to Johann Kuhnau. The motet Der Gerechte kommt um comes down to us as part of the Passion cantata Ein Lammlein geht und tragt die Schuld by Carl Heinrich Graun, into which movements by various other composers, including Bach and Telemann, were also later inserted. According to the research of Diethard Hellmann, editor of this edition, the motet was originally an a cappella composition by Johann Kuhnau with the text Tristis est anima mea, which then was adapted - most likely by Bach - with a new text and the addition of instrumental parts. Žibuoklė Martinaitytė tells about the background of Aletheia (2022) for mixed choir (SSSSAAAATTTTBBBB): Aletheia is variously translated from Greek as unconcealedness, revealing or unclosedness. It is uncovering of the Truth - the one we are afraid to face, the truth that can only be expressed directly through the pre-verbal communication. How do you find words for the horrors of the war, for all unimaginable global atrocities? How do you even allow yourself to feel it out? Solely through art, through music that offer a safe space and a formalized framework for processing these accumulated complex emotions and sharing them with others in a moment. This piece has no verbal text and it is based on various combinations of vowels and consonants, thus connecting us on a deeper level through the immediate emotional experience. The war in Ukraine in spring of 2022 had an impact on all of us and shattered my deeply rooted Lithuanian identity. When the freedom is threatened and innocent people are dying, it is hard to make sense out of the reality. Yet there is poetry even in the worst nightmares. I was imagining that the only instrument people have even in situations of destruction, in the midst of the war, is their VOICE. It brought back memories of my youth when Singing revolution was taking place in the Baltic countries. Human voice was the only weapon that people used to express their determination for freedom and independence. Voice is our first and the very last instrument we have in our lifetime. Thinking in these terms brings almost a sacred dimension to the voice as an expression of the life itself - from the very first baby's scream until the last breath and whisper.Duration c. 15'The works of New York -based Lithuanian composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė (b. 1973) have been lauded as breathtaking and profoundly moving. Her stimulating music bristles with energy and tension and revolves often around the subject of beauty, which she calls both a guiding principle and an aesthetic measure for sonic quality.

There are very few composers who have left such a comprehensive oeuvre covering all genres as Camille Saint-Saens. His vocal music, however, has rather fallen into oblivion - if one leaves aside his 'indestructible' Christmas oratorio (Oratorio de Noel, Opus 12). But apart from that, Saint-Saens, who worked as an organist at various churches from 1852, composed a number of little church music works: settings for different instrumentations, certainly destined to be used in services, including his Ave verum for four-part choir (including organ without pedal ad lib.). It is a simple, yet harmonically rich setting which constitutes a valuable addition to the choral repertoire and an evocative alternative to the common Ave settings.

The extremely compositional versatility of Enjott Schneider is evident even in the small(est) form of choral music. In his about four-and-a-half-minute sacred choral work Ubi caritas for six-part mixed a cappella choir (SSAATB), the award-winning composer combines various musical elements like freely created Gregorian near-quotations, unison passages, sounds of fifths and colourful harmonies, frequent changes of time, as well as meticulously graded dynamic levels into a harmonious whole. Imbued with calmness and sensuality, the church music composition is based on the text of a Latin antiphon from the Maundy Thursday liturgy. According to the composer, these anonymous verses represent for him the central statement of Christian faith: Ubi Caritas - Where there is love, there is God!In his about four-and-a-half-minute sacred choral work Ubi caritas for six-part mixed a cappella choir (SSAATB), Enjott Schneider combines various musical elements like freely created Gregorian near-quotations, unison passages, sounds of fifths and colourful harmonies, frequent changes of time, as well as meticulously graded dynamic levels into a harmonious whole. Johann Sebastian Bach was able to appreciate good works by other composers, as is shown by contemporary accounts, and by a glimpse into what remains of his music library. Francesco Durante, maestro di cappella in Naples, was known in his time as an accomplished composer, who in his sacred works sought to achieve accommodation between the strict stile antico and the stile moderno of concert music at that time. This combination distinguishes his Mass in C minor, and it may have been what awakened Johann Sebastian Bach's interest in this work. He copied it about 1730, not merely for study purposes but in order to perform it, as is indicated by various alterations which he made to the composition. In 2014, Chanticleer commissioned me to make a new arrangement of the Hungarian-Romani folk song Jarba, Mare Jarba for their 2014 touring program. Passed down orally through the Romani communities, this beautiful folk song, with text in a language called Beas (beh-osh), speaks of a deep longing to visit one's homeland, a place where the singer can never return. Chanticleer consists of twelve men whose vocal ranges span from low bass to high soprano, equivalent to the range of a mixed choir of women and men. I composed slow sections of original material to represent the singers' longing to return home; these are interspersed with the folk song's traditional fast sections. The incorporated shouts and calls in the score are typically found in the performance of Central European folk songs. I hope you enjoy singing this new version of Jarba, Mare Jarba that contains all of the vigor and excitement of the Chanticleer version. PERFORMANCE NOTES All spoken sounds (indicated by x noteheads) should be performed by individuals. Feel free to elaborate with more sounds of your own in the tradition of Eastern European folk music. If the piece is memorized, feel free to experiment with clapping on the off-beats of m. 93 to the end. In the musical-historical context Anton Diabelli is among a transitional group of Biedermeier composers who cannot be classed as either classical or romantic. Diabelli's intention was to publish this Mass in accordance with the tradition of his teacher Michael Haydn as a Country Mass, although its technical demands and also its length far exceeded those customary in a Country Mass and Missa brevis. The extant sources offer scope for performance in various different versions as regards the instrumentation used, all these versions having the right to be considered authentic. At times Romantic, at other times with a jazzy touch, the Choral collection Bruckner. Secular choral music is full of exciting discoveries and new arrangements at various levels of difficulty. Anton Bruckner’s secular choral music is often overshadowed by his great symphonies and sacred choral works – unfairly, as choral experts Simon Halsey and Jan Schumacher prove with their small but fine selection of choral music inspired by secular texts. Bruckner left only a few movements for mixed choir; instead, his music for male voices constitutes a far larger body of work. For this collection, renowned arrangers from Germany, England, Denmark, and Italy have specially reworked the most beautiful of these choral movements for SATB, enabling this great repertoire to be performed by mixed choirs. Two original SATB compositions are also included. Furthermore, the choral collection features arrangements of songs originally written for solo voice and piano with texts by such poets as Heinrich Heine and Emanuel Geibel. Another highlight is an arrangement of the Adagio from Bruckner’s String Quintet WAB 112, which Heribert Breuer has created for choir to a text by Georg Trakl.- 16 SATB settings, several with keyboard accompaniment- Selected by Simon Halsey and Jan Schumacher- Modern SATB arrangements of male-voice works and solo songs, as well as original compositions - Affordable complete volume (editionCHOR) as well as separate editions available in print and digitally.- Introductory price valid until 31.10.2023, then 27.00 EUR (editionCHORLEITUNG) and 15.00 EUR (editionCHOR, minimum order: 20 copies)

The Choral Collection Psalms contains over 50 settings for mixed unaccompanied choir from six centuries. It is a true treasure-trove of compositions in various styles and levels of difficulty: with some unknown new discoveries and some classics of the choral literature, the selection will enrich both worship and concerts. The 150 psalms of the Old Testament express rejoicing, joy, confidence, but also lament, grief, anger, and even doubt. The psalms are present throughout Christianity and Judaism to this day, and are sung worldwide in countless settings. The Choral Collection Psalms displays the whole stylistic and linguistic variety ranging from contemplative, simple Anglican chant through Russian Orthodox homophony to virtuoso motets with jazzy echoes. The linguistic spectrum is equally broad: English, French, German (some with added singable English translation), Estonian, Icelandic and, of course, Latin psalm settings are represented, as well as works in Church Slavonic and Hebrew (both accompanied by transliterations and a singable German text). The foreword (German / English) offers many hints regarding the performance of the psalm settings, and a detailed index will help with choosing appropriate pieces for the liturgical occasion according to the Anglican, Protestant, or Catholic calendar. Over the last ten years editor Stefan Schuck has performed two psalm compositions every week in his NoonSong series in Berlin. From the resulting 800 works, he has selected the most interesting compositions arranged according to level of difficulty. The choral director's volume includes a CD with recordings of selected works, sung by sirventes and conducted by the editor, which will help with learning and rehearsing the repertoire. over 50 psalm settings from six centuries for worship and concert use stylistic variety and mixed levels of difficulty: from Anglican Chant to virtuoso motets for four-part mixed choir, some with organ/piano accompaniment transliterations and German singing texts help with practising cross-cultural repertoire liturgical classification of all settings for Catholic, Protestant, and Anglican lectionary includes many unknown jewels such as Boze, Boze moj (Cesar Cui), Jauschew be seser eljaun (David Rubin), and Schubert's setting of Psalm 23 in the first Hebrew version CD recording (sirventes berlin, cond.
