Ce petit Choeur était une des épreuves imposées au concours pour le Prix de Rome 1955. René Maillard, alors en première année de composition dans la classe de Tony Aubin avait sans doute trouvé le sujet à son goût puisqu'il fut reçu logiste et obtint ensuite un 2d GRAND PRIX. Le poème évoque la candeur d'une toute jeune fille refusant de se laisser entraîner au ' bal des champs, si gai le soir, si triste le matin '. Un ton enjoué, un rythme de danse populaire étaient de mise pour illustrer cette fable juvénile ! Avec le recul, l'oeuvre garde toute sa fraîcheur. Elle doit trouver sa place dans les chorales d'amateurs pour terminer gaîment un concert consacré à la musique française folklorique ou classique.
