Cöthen Funeral Music BWV 244a-The so-called Köthener Trauermusik (Cöthen Funeral Music) was performed at the memorial service for Prince Leopold of Anhalt Cöthen on 24 March 1729. The history of reconstruction begins in the second half of the nineteenth century. In 1873 Wilhelm Rust co-editor of the first Complete Bach Edition and subsequently Thomaskantor established the fundamental relationship between the Köthener Trauermusik on the one hand and the St. Matthew Passion and Trauerode BWV 198 on the other. In the service of concert practice it is the intention of this attempted reconstruction to enrich the repertoire of church music for Passiontide and the period aroundthe Sunday before Advent on which the dead are commemorated. It is also hoped that it will contribute to the understanding of Bach?s ?Great Passion? whose sister work the Köthener Trauermusik is.

Peter Sculthorpe's programme note reads as follows 'Lullaby is based upon one of the number of indigenous Australian melodies collected by Dr H.C. Lethbridge during the 1930s and is a lullaby for children victimised by war. It opens with several statements of indigenous melody the words lovingly entreating children to embrace sleep as night falls. This is followed by a short central section that questions the need for war its text taken from another song in the Lethbridge collection. The melody then returns leading to a quiet coda suggesting the calmness of sleep and for many children the beauteousness of Paradise.'The piece is set for unaccompanied mixedvoices. The Faber Choral Signature Series introduces a wealth of new or recently written choral music to choirs in search of fresh repertoire. The series draws in a rich diversity of living composers and includes both lighter and more challenging contemporary works offering a thrilling array of varied styles.

This introduction is distinguished from the setting of Michaelangelo's test by adopting a plainsong style although it builds to aclimax with progressively rich harmony Duration: c 12 minutes.

Job (Vocal Score)-A substantial work for four soli SATB chorus and orchestra using text from the translation of Stephen Mitchell's The Book Of Job. Like Vaughan Williams in his Job: A Masque for Dancing Davies was inspired inpart by William Blake's 21 engravings for the Book of Job. His oratorio however is less dependent on find parallels for Blake's visual details given the direct poetry in David Lemon's adaptation of the Stephen Mitchelltranslation from the biblical original it is hardly surprising that the spotlight should be so much on Job's suffering litany. The baritone has the lion's share of the setting though the other soloists occasionally reinforce hisplea and chorale-like episodes universalize his predicament. Davies frames with work with two seminal plainsong-like passages; there is also plenty of dramatic contrast both within Job's monologues and in the vivid orchestralwriting for the smarmy Comforters the initially shrill God who finally appears out of a dazzling orchestral whirlwind and the animal life he uses to illustrate the wonders of creation to a humbled Job.Commissioned by theUniversity of British Colombia it was first performed in May 1997 by Valdine Anderson (soprano) Linda Maguire (mezzo soprano) Paul Moore (tenor) and Kevin McMillan (baritone) with the Vancouver Bach Choir and the CBC VancouverOrchestra conducted by the composer.Vocal score with piano reduction of the orchestral score. Duration c. 70mins.

Britten's Jubilate is written for SATB choir and Organ accompaniment.Benjamin Britten's birthday (22nd November 1913 Lowestoft) falls on St. Cecilia's Day a happy augury for the career of one of Britain's greatestcomposers. Essentially a vocal composer Britten won international fame for his operas and song-cycles. He never abandoned the principles of tonality and was a 'modern' composer who reached a mass audience and a conservative whoseoriginality no radical would sensibly deny. He shared with his predecessors Parry Vaughan Williams and Holst an intense interest in works for amateurs and children. His brilliant gifts as a pianist and conductor coupled withhis virtuosic inventiveness also led him to compose music for great performers such as the cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and the singers Galina Vishnevskaya Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Janet Baker. The greatestpersonal influence on his music was the Tenor Peter Pears for whom he composed many operatic and vocal roles. In 1948 Britten Pears and Eric Crozier founded the Aldeburgh Festival now one of the most respected established fornew English music. In 1952 he was made a Companion of Honour in 1965 received the Order of Merit and in 1976 the year of his death he became the first composer to receive a life peerage.Oxford University Press wasBritten's first publisher. In the early 1930s A Boy Was Born and the Simple Symphony brought him great critical acclaim and launched his compositional career. Oxford is delighted to present some previouslyunpublished pieces in collaboration with the Britten Estate. These include the Double Concerto for Violin and Viola premiered at Snape by the Britten-Pears Orchestra under Kent Nagano in June 1997; Two Portraits forString Orchestra premiered on BBC Radio 3 in December 1995 by the Northern Sinfonia under Martyn Brabbins; The World Of The Spirit the full version first performed in 1938 on the BBC Home Service the abridged

The text comes from the pen of the seventeenth-century Welsh poet Henry Vaughan a leading metaphysical voice during the Commonwealth period (1649-1660) when the republican government of Oliver Cromwell banned the Anglican Church. Christ's Nativity was commissioned by the Cathedral Choral Society of Washington D.C. with support from the Richard Wayne Dirksen Memorial Endowment Fund. The selected lyrics by Welsh poet Henry Vaughan fascinated me immensely and therfore prompted me to think about a specific musical environment for the piece best suited for merging the music into this wonderful poetic landscape. This poetry brings about a strong mixture of the Evangelicalmystery of Christ's Nativity mystically evoked by Nature and at the same time reveals the optimism and drama of an ordinary individual that any human being can easily identify with.

This anthem was commissioned by Sam Wanamaker of the Globe Theatre Trust and first performed at Southwark Cathedral by the Exultate Singers under Garrett O'Brien on 23rd April 1972.In spite of Berkeley's adherence to RomanCatholic traditions the hymn is close to Anglican patterns and shows Berkeley's return to diatonic materials after a more exploratory approach in the 1960s. There is even a melodic blue not or false relation also found in someof Berkeley's earlier music as well as later pieces such as the sixth Prelude and a prominent motif in Nelson. The Irish-born C. Day-Lewis (1904-72) was poet laureate from 1968 until hisdeath.                Peter Dickinson
