Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's Sonata in A minor for solo Flute constitutes a counterpart to the partita of his father Johann Sebastian in the same key. Created in 1747 but unpublished until 1763 it heralds the sentimental style of a new era compared to the ca. 30 years older work of his father. The edition is based on the first edition which is hidden among Piano works by C. Ph. E. Bach and other composers in the anthology 'Musikalisches Mancherley'. A separate edition also published in 1763 proved to be an offspring of the first edition with identical musical text and could be eliminated as source for the edition. But the edition wasalso based on a late 18th-century copy from the Giedde Collection in Copenhagen which is of great significance to the Flute literature. Although it also seems to go back to the first edition it nevertheless turns out to be a contemporary corrective to deficiencies of the first edition in some passages. The practical performance notes of the Kuijken pupil Susanne Schrage not only come close to the musical text by means of the Flute method of Bach's Berlin fellow composer Johann Joachim Quantz but also analyse relevant chapters of 'Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu spielen' by C. Ph. E. Bach himself thus providing interpretational aids right from the composer's perspective.

The 'Sonata d'arpeggione' was originally written for the guitarre d'amour or arpeggione - a kind of enlarged guitar that could be bowed cello-style. The instrument did not survive longer than a few years but this piece by Schubert is a lovely reminder. This edition is transcribed for flute by James Galway and edited by Phillip Moll for the Great Performer's Edition series.The opening Allegro Moderato is built around a wistful melody. A second theme proceeds in gentle gusts of semiquavers (the arpeggione could not play fast notes with much volume at all and so the Sonata's quicker portions are almost always marked piano or pianissimo). The Adagio is a rich but introverted musing on an almost hymn-like subject at the end Schubert invites the soloist to improvise a brief transition into the final multi-sectioned Allegretto.

As a notable Flute player Marcel Moyse (1889-1984) studied at the Paris Conservatoire under the direction of virtuoso flautists Paul Taffanel Adolphe Hennebains and Philippe Gaubert. His accomplishment on the instrument soon established itself on paper with the composer producing many study and exercise books for the Flute. This includes the acclaimed 25 Études Mélodiques. The compilation covers aspects such as articulation ornamentation range and rhythm in the form of moderately difficult variations.
