Book 2-The two books contain some 100 songs chosen from the definitive collections of The English Lutenists begun by Edmund Fellowes revised by Thurston Dart and added to by later scholars. They include many favourites and many lesser-known songs by popular composers such as Dowland Campion and Pilkington (no known ancestor of the compiler) as well as some unjustly forgotten such as Corkine Attey and Ferrabosco. Nearly all are for middle-range voice with lute parts transcribed in staff notation. The books have an appropriate preface and a commentary on the words which often throw a penetrating light on Elizabethan and Jacobean life.

Par MASSENET JULES. Cendrillon (Cinderella), with a libretto by Henri Cain based on Perrault's fairytale, premiered in 1899 in Paris. Best known for composing over thirty operas, the composer, Jules Massenet (1842-1912) purposely did not attend the premiere, but received a telegram the following day from baritone Fugère recording its triumph. Incorporating the composer's sense of humour and wit, the use of recurrent motifs is subtle and often thought to be inspired by Richard Wagner. Cendrillon contains musical echoes of the 18th century, incorporating gallant music, the use of the Lute and Viola D'Amore and a series of Balletentrees. The Opera is in four acts with 19 characters and a chorus. The role of Prince Charming is a breeches role whilst the melody lines of the Fairy Godmother are characterised by trills and arpeggios. This edition is based on the critical edition of The Barber of Seville edited by Patricia B. Brauner and published in 2008 as part of the series Works of Gioachino Rossini. But who needs a new critical edition of The Barber of Seville? The opera has been performed in theatres throughout the world since 1816 and has never been absent from the repertoire. There are two reasons for a critical new edition: firstly none of the early editions satisfy modern demands for a scholarly-critical edition. And secondly there is a wealth of previously unpublished material relating to this opera of great interest to both scholars and performers.Thusthe famous overture which Rossini had already used in his earlier opera Aureliano in Palmira differs noticeably from earlier editions in many places.
