For String Orchestra-Eros was given its world premiere in Moscow Russia in the Hall of Composers at the XXIX Annual Fall Moscow New Music Festival sponsored by the Union of Russian Composers. It was the first American work to be premiered at the Festival in over twodecades. In the following years Eros has been presented by the Union of Ukrainian Composers at their Kiev International New Music Festival and by other orchestras in Russia and Ukraine. This score is the first publication of the revised composition.The composer rewrote twenty-one seconds of music in the first movement ?Song? which is in this score. It was the Weihnachtskonzert (Christmas concerto) in C major that won special popularity continuing a tradition which was cultivated by Corelli with his pastoral at the end of Op. 6 No. 8 or by Torelli in his Op. 8 No. 6 and reaching to the pastoral in Händel's Messiahs and to the sinfonia in the second cantata of Johann Sebastian Bach's Christmas oratorium. This finally originates from the music-making of shepherds - coming from the Abruzzi and from Calabria to Rome at Christmas to play the shawm and the bagpipes in front of the cribs. Hence the popular consecutive thirds and the sustained bass tones characterizing the first Largo a genuine siciliano in the rocking typically dotted 12/8 time.

String Quartet no. 2 op. 15-Alexander Zemlinsky?s music was long unjustly overshadowed by what was regarded as the more progressive? Second Viennese School. Although Zemlinsky was close friends with its protagonist Arnold Schönberg he never did take the latter?s radical step into dodecaphony. At the same time he composed works that were no less original or fully fledged. Composed between 1913 and 1915 his Second String Quartet in particular pushed the contemporaneous understanding of form and tonality to its limits. With just one movement but spanning over 1 200 measures this multi-faceted work numbers among the most significant contributions to the genre of the time and has long merited acritical new edition. The Urtext edition by G. Henle Publishers corrects many errors and inaccuracies in the first edition that came to light after careful comparison with the autograph sources in Vienna and Washington. For the first time too the metronome markings that survive only in one of Zemlinsky?s letters have been incorporated. Editorial work was kindly supported by the Alexander Zemlinsky Endowment Fund in Vienna.

Score-The title Gazebo Dances was suggested by the pavilions (often seen on village greens in towns throughout the countryside) where public band concerts are given on summer evenings. The delights of that sort ofentertainment are portrayed in this set of dances which begins with a Rossini-like Overture is followed by a rather peg-legged Waltz a long-lined Adagio and finishes with a bouncy Tarantella.

All players are given a sample solo along with a solo sheet on the back of their parts teaching them the basics of improvisation. In this case the entire basis of the solo is a G Major scale making for a positive experience for virtually any performer. Outstanding writing by a jazz violinist!

This wonderful arrangement of the second movement from Mozart's Symphony #17 is an excellent piece for developing ensembles to learn about the stylistic nuances of Mozart. Arranged by Steven Campbell in G major and set in common time, younger musicians will find the setting very accessible.
