Commissioned by the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, this concertino was originally conceived as a part of a complete educational concertprogram. Four concertini, each featuring a different instrumental family within the chamber orchestra, are played in succession to demonstrate the characteristic sounds of those instruments. The music is thematically related but not identical to the Concertino for Chamber Orchestra (parts available on rental from the publisher), which serves as the program's closer, demonstrating all of theorchestral sections playing together. This program is suggested by the composer for orchestra concerts, however each instrumental concertino can be performed individually and stands quite effectively on its own as a short chamber recital piece.

The six CONCERTI ARMONICI was long thought to be the work of the violinist-impresario Carlo Ricciotti or composer Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, but more recent research has revealed the composer to be Unico Wilhelm van Wassenauer (1692-1766). Born into a wealthy Dutch family, the diplomat and composer founded a Collegium musicum in The Hague under the oversight of Ricciotti. Composed between 1725 and 1740, the six concertos have been falsely attributed to a variety of contemporaries, Ricciotti and Pergolesi amongst them, since its anonymous publication. Wassenauer's aristocratic background was the reason for his secretiveness. The sentiment of the time ordained that musicians belong to the lower classes. This edition of CONCERTINO No. 2 (also CONCERTO ARMONICO in G Major, CONCERTO IV, or just CONCERTINO in G), drawing from the CONCERTO ARMONICO in G Major, IUW 3, was edited by 20th century Baroque expert Fritz Rikko. Rikko spuriously attributes the work to Pergolesi. Despite Wassenauer's authorship having since been confirmed, Rikko's original editorial notes have been retained. Instrumentation: Str (4 Vn parts [2.2.2.2].3.2.2): Harpsichord Continuo in score.

Commissioned by the National String Project Consortium, this gorgeous lyrical work can be performed alone as an intermediate level piece, or with multi-level supplemental parts (available separately) for beginning and developing string students. Orchestrated to celebrate inclusion and diversity, the multi-level option is designed to sound far greater than the intermediate version alone. Not your traditional festival orchestra piece by any means.

Harald Genzmer's composition Divertimento di danza for string orchestra clearly continues the baroque form of the divertimento. This light music * in the truest sense of the word * consisted of a sequence of loose movements with free forms and dance movements alternat-ing in varied succession. The divertimento comprised five to six movements. Genzmer kept to all these facts but he brought new life into the old forms. Though he did not compose in the old style, he respected certain rules of the traditional form. Ouverture * Allegro (Fugato) * Adagio * Presto (on an Old French dance) * Finale (on an English dance movement).

With this lively suite, the Hungarian music -teacher and pupil of Kodaly created a very in-s-tructive piece. Since all parts have independ-ent melodic tasks and are very often opposed to each other one by one or in pairs, the suite is particularly suitable for the work with the individual string parts and for the training of the ensemble playing.

The four movements of the Yougoslavian composer and pupil of Fortner are easy but demand an elegant leggiero manner of bowing from the violinists. A cheerful and very instructive piece.

Joseph Haas was the teacher, Paul Hindemith the model of the director of many years' standing of the Frankfurter Musikhochschule. The Heitere Suite was created in 1945. After a slow introduction (quasi rezitativo) with a viola solo full of suspense, the first violins start playing a succinct, rhythmically accentuated theme dominat-ing the whole movement and appearing in many different forms. Lively intensifications and, not least, the occasional soloistic use of the instruments are giving colour to this work. A valu-able addition to our concert programmes of moderate modern style.
